Lol..Prince has had a lazy poppy approach to most of what he has done since Rainbow Children (I didn't care for that album...but he made some effort). Simplicity is not always laziness either. I think that Cadillac track is fun to listen to. Might get old at a point, but not bad ebough to make me scream. People expect Prince (as other artists) to be engaged when he makes music - why bother otherwise. IMO he has only gone through the motions and it shows. THIS album (and fDeluxe) both have styles I enjoy AND sound as if the music needed to get out NOW versus stuff that is tepid and has no inspiration. Again- my opinion..but I think that is what people are recting to on this album. It FEELS like they worked hard and had fun making it. Plus they know a thing or two about hooks and playing as a bonus.

Sorry have to disagree with you, 3121 and especially the lotusflowr cd are not lazy and if you can enjoy Cadillac of all songs i don't see how you can not like one track from those two Prince cds. but i do agree that the condensate cd is very well crafted and a huge winner.

i feel ya cause 3121 and lotusflow3r/mplsound is the shit but in no way is 20ten even in condensate's parking lot. u can hear the fun and funk in condensate i haven't heard fun from prince since lotus/mpls

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

It's funny you mentioned 3121 because it has a "Time" track on it that's better than 3/4 of the Condensate CD. Lolita!!!

"Child Molester"... or "Lolita" as Prince titled it is a lower tier Prince song. Musically good, but lyrically horrible. If The Time had come out with it, no... who are we kidding? The lyrics would never pass muster with Jam and Lewis. The entire song takes place in the singer's mind. That's cornball and creepy given the girl Prince is talking about in the track is apparently an adolescent girl. Anybody care to make excuses for Prince on this one?

There are some real throwback tracks that are done well in the way Prince has sometimes done like Lolita - Strawberry Lake obviously sits in the grounds of the Ice-Cream Castle, and If I Was Yo Man is really slick and hooky. The modern sounding tracks like Trendin' and Role Play range from white noise to icky and cringeworthy. Jam/Lewis haven't produced anything that's caught my interest in about 15 years at least, so anything that sounds like the stuff they would knock out recently for some bit of fluff or closeted crooner isn't going to appeal to me anyway.

I think overall, it isn't something I will be revisiting that often, the production values do not really appeal to me, but it does have a modern pop sound, so I think if it gets the exposure there's no reason why they couldn't have a mini-reneissance type hit or two (I use the term hit loosely, I know they're not going to be sitting atop the pop charts for months to come).

I'll be making a shorter version for the ipod, I think it could use a little pruning to weed out some of the weaker tracks (IMO). I know it's tempting to want as many tracks as possible if any artist has been MIA for decades, but I prefer an LP's worth of strong material to a CD crammed with filler.

Jesse's guitar really bring some of the tracks to life too, he might be the best thing about it. biggrin

Wait, so you favored FDeluxe over this? Wow!! We are treading into bizzaro land and have switched opinions or something. lol

It's a "Time" track in the style of the holla back vocals and cooler than thou lyrics. Same vein as 'Prettyman' and "Movie Star'.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

This music gets even better the more that I listen to it. It's like letting something marinate, and all the flavors come together.

Jesse showed his ass. Jesse literally showed out on these songs! He is baaaaaad! Sick with it, wink If I Was Yo Man is my jam, and Condensate is my sssssshhhhhh. headbang

AYDKMN eek eek The breakdown goes so hard! Serious jam, and I'm loving it! It's now a favorite of mine. I funked all the way through Friday evening traffic thanks to the OG's.

Right. I get that, but lyrically it is way across the line. Probably some R Kelly level of disgusting if you think about it. Every song on Condensate is better than 'Lolita'.

I love the excitement and conversation this CD has generated on this site. Remember when a new Prince release would create this kind of POSITIVE discussion, analysis, and excitement? That's what probably brought most of us to the Org. Hopefully we can get back to that more consistently.

Lolita is what I call "uninspired and forced". The quality of "Condensate", and that's maybe the reason for all the excitement it gets on the org, is: it is well crafted and doesn't sound uninspired like most of Prince's albums of recent years. Therefore I can easily say, "Condensate" is much more enjoyable than anything Prince released in recent years.

The main problem for me is: I can't stand their poppy approach. There are too many melodies and choruses on this album which sound like boring mainstream pop.

Y'know...this is what's bothering me about both this album and Gaslight. They both just sound sort of...bland. Like albums that would be put out by the parents of The Time and The Family.

Bland? Not really!

1st I'd say they are totally different albums. There are some really good funk jams on "Gaslight". It's just the amount of too many moody ballads (indeed a W&L vibe) that slows it down too much.

Even "Condensate" with its poppy approach is too well crafted to call it bland as such.

i see we are at opposite ends of the spectrum when it somes to funky. I thought Lolita was childish and cheesey at the same time. Pure embarrasment. Also - I enjoy Cadillac for now, but I can see it potentially wearing out it's welcome.

Album gets better as Time (oops ... don't sue me Prince) goes on. Songs I used to skip (lol at skip like this album is a decade old or something) get major play now. After the original (7ven) run when I got the record I had my favorites and Faithful, Roleplay, Sick, Aydkmn where not them. But damn, this shit is sick!!

Now, THIS album truly brings back a lot of elements of the Minneapolis Sound and updates them. I mean, the keys on so many of these songs are...the "shit is SICK"! I'm more excited and happy about this release than anything of Prince's in the past decade. The only thing that I listened to half as much as this one was 3121.

Prince said virtually every track on MPLSound could be played on the radio. Yeah, maybe for the "Pump It or Dump It?" segment where we KNOW it's going to be dumped, but there are a lot of decent tracks on here that could also get by on the radio too. It's not all just poppy ass nonsense. Granted, there are a couple of elements on a couple of tracks that lean a little too far into the present, with its hip-hop and current elements and whatnot. But as a whole, this is extremely well done.

I think live, this band could STILL kick Prince's ass on that stage. Imagine their classic catalog along with some of these tracks peppered in there and accentuated being performed....KILLER!! And they're still fun! They haven't let getting older stand in the way of having some fuckin' fun, yet still have some maturity to them. People (usually the ass kissers) say that Prince wouldn't sound right as a 53-year old man cursing. Yeah. Right. rolleyes Does it sound "ridiculous" or "potty" when Morris or the band says "shit" or "damn" or "fuck"? No, of course not. So that excuse for defending Prince not cursing (if it's due to religion, that's one thing; but don't sit there and say it wouldn't sound right for a 50-something year old dude using profanity) goes right down the toilet.

Prince, take note for your next album. Take the stick out yo' ass and have some fun in the studio and get some talented people around you to bounce ideas off of, like you did up until about 1987. You'll be able to hear it in the music.

I'm sure I'll catch some hell for this post, but I don't give a fuck! Long live The muthafuckin' Original 7ven!!!!!!!!! headbang
