FDeluxe- Gaslight

There's a bunch of threads going now on FDeluxe but none really on the release of Gaslight. It's been in a lot of people's hands since the MPLS show so let's put our reviews here, curious to see what others are thinking. cool

I don't have a copy, but I got a chance to hear it. I wasn't all that thrilled with what I heard.

I guess if I get my own, I'll have a chance to sit down and "digest" it.

"Love Hurts.
Your lies, they cut me.
Now your words don't mean a thing.
I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..."

I love the whole album but honestly I have had Lover on repeat so much that I haven't even finished listening to the whole album lol

This to me is what The Family would sound like in 2011 had they had a chance to grow into their career together as a band. It would have been a joke had they try to sound like the first album, that as we all know was a Prince album with the Family playing characters that he wanted them to play. The first show at 1st Ave was great but so cheesy and that was ALL Prince's vision.

Seeing them play as a BAND at Largo last week proved that they are amazing musicians and the new music stands up great all on it's own. It took about half the show for it to sink in that I was actually getting to see the Family.

Drummers and Healers for me is brilliant. It just makes me move like a Sly and the Family Stone jam. I love hearing that solo from Doyle and he's totally audible in the chorus vocals. GREAT TRACK!

Over the Canyon is a perfect example of a more mature sound of the first album. I love the dual vocals on the verses. Eric's horn lines are perfection. Total sexy song.

Gaslight I love the music, I'm still getting used to the chorus vocal but it's growing on me.

Beautiful You is still in the growing on me phase, it didn't grab me right away.

@8- what a fun track!! It just moves so nice and makes me want to just MOVE!! Sounded great live too.

The Vigil- This gem really stands out, a great song written by Wendy & Lisa. It's also very sexy, the strings, the swelling horns, all with those amazing vocals. Probably my second favorite.

Leeds Line- ok now we're talking!!! Everything I love about the Family and Madhouse all wrapped into one!!! Eric Leeds proves that he is every bit as important to Prince's music as anyone. He will always be THE Prince sax player, like Maceo to James. Play this one LOUD!!!

Lover- from the first snippet, I knew this was the one. From Eric's tasty sax intro to Susannah's amazing vocal, wow I just can't say enough. Sadly, this song is a hit and would kill at radio, if there's any justice in this world this song will get heard by the masses!!!

And I was not meaning to do a review like this but these songs are sooooooo good I couldn't stop lol Now, once i get passed Lover i'll see what the rest sounds like.

Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

So far I love the cd. From beggining to end. Nice to have a cd I can leave in amy car and come in anywhere and like it. Been a while. Lover, Leeds Line, The Vigil and Gaslight stand out to me. Tho I like Beautiful You a lot as well. the vocals are cool on it. and I am a sucker for the harmonies on When You Go. Surprised by the arrangement being so different as what they did on stage. And yeah- it seems like a 25 year old follow up. Stronger band and arrangements and many more influences which is all a good thing. A few tracks harken back, but many carve a new path forward. Can't wait forthe NEXT one!!

LOVINGGGG it.

Will have to get back with specifics, but definitely loving "Lover" at the moment.

"Drummers & Healers" is a great album opening song!

Ok so I finally made it passed Lover lol

When You go- sounded amazing in concert, amazing vocals, just not one I could listen to a lot at this point, but it's good.

Sanctified- loved it when they put the clip on Myspace a couple years ago and they have fattened it up nicely!! Love that cool guitar part that Wendy does.

Last House on the Block- beautiful, nice little breath of fresh air after being sanctified right before it lol

WOW, I love this album more everyday and I can't believe it's FINALLY here!!! Thank you FDeluxe, by any name it's great to have you back!!

Just grabbed it off iTunes. Sounding good! I think they've done a great job of recapturing that 'Family Sound' but with a modern twist. Eric Leeds is still the man cool

Just got my copy this evening at the wrecka stow (thank you, Newbury Comics, for stocking what the big boxes won't), and am really enjoying it, particularly the first three tracks.

Something very odd I noticed.... The plastic wrap on the U.S. release has a UPC sticker on it, which covers the UPC code printed on the rear of the digipak. The sticker has the disc's correct UPC code, 020286166580. The UPC printed on the digipak is 616892142263, which, it turns out, is actually the UPC code for this. How strange is that?!?!? Can't be a random mistake. Some kind of cryptic 'thank you', I suppose?

Still in fdeluxe bliss cloud9

The vocals on this are so spot on. Not to mention the band, of course.

It's very difficult for me to choose favorites right now, but I'm gonna go with "Drummers & Healers", "Over the Canyon", "@8", "Lover" and "Sanctified" as the strongest tracks.

I like the title track (don't dislike a single track), reminds me a bit of W&L's "Fruit at the Bottom".

"Over the Canyon" and "@8" rule the album for me. PERFECTION.

Me too!! I've had it on repeat all day and I'm still getting excited for the songs and not tired of them at all. I did throw in some White Flags of Winter Chimneys yesterday but I'm back to Gaslight lol

I sure hope they get to use the ?uestlove conncection and get to play on Fallon sometime.

Just giving the Album my first listen... & YES, "Leeds Lines" is Classic Madhouse. The album seems to have some filler, but is a real good listen overall...

Not an ounce of filler imo and I've listened to it a good 40 times. You jumped on one comment like it's gospel, so there is a point of view from someone well part the first listen. Perhpas you should just check it out yourself instead of trolling the fDeluxe posts just to make inane commentary. Dave - what is it you consider "filler". I would be curious.

Not sure if filler is the right word. I think Lover and Vigil are okay, the rest...I've been trying, i just can't get into this cd. Songs are so forgettable. Still plan on seeing them on the 29th though. If anything I will enjoy them live!

Just downloaded and REALLY diggin what I am hearing so far. I am one of the few on the org that likes most of Prince's recent stuff, but there are things on here that I think is missing in Prince's music. Mainly Eric Leeds. Good stuff guys. Here's hoping you make a stop in Chicago.

dang...what DO you like? Great hooks, great music, great vocals? Curious what your tastes lean towards that this doesn't hit you. Not dogging your opinion, just seeing what it is you like.

why is this so difficult for you? It's called an opinion. I like everything about music, Great arrangmentments, great vocals, whatever is pleasing to ME. I just don't get the appeal of this CD and what's so great about these songs and i've listened to it twice. the third time i just couldn't get through it. just as you claim to not like anything of Prince recently, that's okay as i view it simply as your opinion. if you love it, then rock on and enjoy. I still have respect for them as musicians, that's why i'm going to see them. I wish I could enjoy as much as you folks are but my taste is my taste. either way I'm happy fans are having a great time with the new release.

After 4 years of taking time for the project they didn't manage to handle the "sensitive" preorder issue the right way (the first substantial contact between them and their customers). Sorry, but that's weak! I preordered the CD not because I wanted to get a signed CD or to support them in the first place, I preordered the CD because I wanted to listen to the music as soon as possible.

Considering the amount of time they've spent on creating this record you can also imagine that I was quite surprised reading about some fillers on their record.

So you still think that I'm a troll making inane commentaries?

I'm about 3-4 songs in, and I'm not really feeling it yet. The first one, Drummers & Healers, is okay, but the other two bored me, as I had to skip that 3rd or 4th one. I'm hoping it gets a LOT better as it goes along. I'll try to check the rest of it out later on today.
