Q for girlz here: Did anybody here started belly dancing lessons because of Mayte?

Hey, be nice it's my first thread ok razz

So, that said, I did.

A friend of mine and I, both Prince fans since Gold Experience, started taking Belly Dancing lessons after seeing the video for 'The One' in which we thought she was just beautifully dancing..

So, are we crazy or is there any other girl here who did start taking belly dancing lessons because of Mayte (or because she was with prince, and belly dancing)?

(If thread is in wrong section, feel free to move, I wasn't sure.)

Yeah, I love Graffiti Bridge movie, so what? ''Oooooooooooh Montreal, say it!''
If you can't be nice to someone on the net, you probably ain't worth much talking to in real life either.

Hi Carinemjj

I will answer your question smile I had an obsession with Egyptology after studying it when I was 7 years old at school, by the age of 8 I was introduced to Diamonds and Pearls Album by my mum via my Auntie who's BF at the time was a huge Prince fan.

I was 10 when I got hold of the symbol album introducing Mayte for which I was more excited about the whole swearing thing of Sexy MF (I was only 10, swearing was cool!!). I loved 3 Chains O' Gold video with all the Egyptian princess theme etc which was where I got to see Mayte dancing as previously she was just the girl in the golden costume on the album inlay.

By about 13 I was wearing black eyeliner which I still wear now! When I was 15 I saw an article on new local belly dancing lessons and decided to give it a go and took to it like a duck to water.

I ve danced in a resturant and supermarket (promo for middle eastern food)but I credit Mayte as my inspiration. Infact I found myself a snob looking at other belly dancers because they never had the style beauty or grace of Mayte!! I can flip the coins and sword dance although I m highly out of practice!

I think all of us growing up are influenced by people and things around us as its how we learn about life so I dont think it is strange to have been introduced and inspired to Belly Dance by Mayte. She also made me view it as an art with my body as the instrument rather than the common misception of it being stripping or lap dancing!

There are many women who are prince fans and were inspired to belly dance by seeing Mayte.

I hope that answers your question smile

N.

Thank you for your answer smile I'm glad I don't sound like a crazy fan who started belly dancing because of seing her in Prince's videos. She's so beautiful! I did 2 shows at my former University but I had to stop.. wish I'd start doing it again, it felt good and I liked it a lot.

Yeah, I love Graffiti Bridge movie, so what? ''Oooooooooooh Montreal, say it!''

As a freshman in college (1991) and I went to a small show that starred a troup called "Goddess Dancing"... the ladies invited me and other people in the audience to dance after, I enjoyed it a lot!

I loved the costumes and I thought each woman was uniquely beautiful, they all danced differently.

One of the dancers liked how I danced, she said I was a quick study and handed me a flyer for classes, she said she would give me a discount and gave me a pretty belt.

The very next week I traveled two towns over to be in her class, she stuck me in a master's class after a few sessions and I was a member of the troup the very next summer, doing my own solo.

I was in the best shape of my life and loving it... the very same year, the prince CD came out...

I thought... Prince and me are on the same vibe. lol

That album actually got me listening to Prince again... I was on a hiatus after the Grafitti Bridge fiasco... turned me right OFF.

As an Egyptian I must say she sucks for a bellydancer.. not that great. I go to arab restaurants, clubs and concerts and see better.
