What if Vanity starred in PR?

No disrespect to the original "Sex Shooter" I LOVE APPLES! But could you all imagine if Vanity starred in Purple Rain originally she was supposed to. What would the film have been like. I can't picture her being as submissive as Miss Apollonia. If P asked her to jump in the lake the old Vanity would have probably kicked him in the balls.

I like Vanity.
BUT...
Prince told her to wear lingerie in cold ass Minneapolis and she did that!
Jumping in a freezing lake wouldn't have been a stretch.

I think the movie would have had one more song by the girls if she had stayed on board. Apollonia was untested as a draw for the fans unlike Vanity.

It would have been a different film, that's for sure. When I was a kid, I was bummed big time that Vanity and Dez both weren't in the film. Well, not counting Dez's "cameo" but if he hadn't split the band, he was actually written in one of the early drafts. So anyway, I used to think "Man, if Vanity was in the film, it would have been MUCH better." But as time passed, my thought process has shifted somewhat. Why? Because if V was in the film, no doubt it would have been much darker in tone. Way more sinister, I think. Reading the draft that casted Vanity in the film shows that the movie was more edgier and again darker. IF WB would have went on to film that script and V had stayed and been in the film...I don't know if the film would have had the mass appeal that it had. Meaning, it REALLY would have been a "fans only" type of film for the most part. It would have done well commercially but I think that Appolonia's pressence "softened" the film and therefore "softened" Prince to a degree. Although pretty and cute, she didn't exude any edginess and bite that Vanity certainly would have brought. I think with Vanity in the film, the whole tone of the movie would have been darker. I think because of Appolonia's lightweightness, it actually appealed to more people. Especially younger kids. If the film was made like how P wanted made, with both the parents dead and V was in it too, it would have been more of a "cult" underground vibe than it ended up being. Apples made it more "commercial" and more "accessible" to the mainstream audience because she was so lightweight-ish. And so I think it did better in the box office.

I think for the most part the film that we got was the same that Vanity was going to be in.

The movie was a lot darker, because Prince wanted it that way, he wanted the father to have died as well. All those deleted scenes show that there was some serious danger and darkness in the film (Purple Rain trailer)

Of course Vanity would have had a different energy but would have still played the part, that fight scene after the Taste performance I could really see Vanity getting rough

But what Vanity would have brought would have been the realness that Morris & the Time the Revolution, Jill Jones, Chick, Billy, Susan & Brenda and all those others who were in the film that were already apart of the Uptown scene, the chemistry would have been a lot more fluid and natural

This is exactly what I came in here to say.

Apollonia softened the movie and helped in giving it that mainstream appeal that Prince was striving for with the movie as his 'big breakthrough'.

Vanity would've been great, but it would've been a 'Controversy/1999' movie, not a Purple Rain?ATWIAD movie if you see what I mean. Much more striking, but not as widely appealing.

I don't think she would have had that much influence. The movie was still Prince's vehicle. And she didn't make The Last Dragon any edgier!

Now, Gina Gershon would have transformed that movie.
