Eroica

I bought this when I was in college. Wendy & Lisa's musical chops had impressed me long before, but this album floored me.

They had put out a project that succeeded at melding old soul, classic rock, jazz & classical touches and folk into fresh pop. Whenever I spin it (after some time away), I hear something new about it. Tonight, I put it on and was bowled over by the bass playing on it.

Solid songwriting from beginning to end, with great musicianship on it, as well.

thumbs up! to the Girl Bros., for such a solid, enjoyable album.

I still have my old cassette version too. This is in my top 10 albums of all time. Brilliant! Shame it didn't get more recognition...the girls were WAY ahead of their time on this one.

I often hear that. In what way do you think, and with what songs?

This came out in 1990...before Sheryl Crow, before Alanis, before Lilith Fair...was Amy Weinhouse (sp?) even born yet? Those 1st few Sheryl Crow albums sound like complete rip offs of Eroica to me. W&L was doing it all themselves before it was "popular"...also they comibined all styles, rock, pop, folk, R&B, and funk and made it into their own sound. Specific songs...Mother of Pearl, Why Wait For Heaven, Don't Try to Tell Me, Skeleton Key, Porch Swing, and Staring at the Sun. Also love Crack in the Pavement...ya think this is about their former boss?

I was curious about the stars in particular. I always thought the Lilith Fair crowd had more ethereal, strictly pop sensibilities (i.e., Sarah MacLachlan and Paula Cole). W&L have ties to Sheryl, so they've had a hand in crafting that sound for her. Alanis always seemed more rock oriented... well, on her debut... I can see a more W&L feel on Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie (especially with her feeling Indian sounds even more on that album). hmmm Natalie Imbruglia's early hits reminded me of W&L's touch, for sure.

But, then, so did Dionne Farris' "Wild Seed, Wild Flower." That screamed Girl Bros., to me.

As for songs about Prince, I thought a number of them were, Porch Swing chief among them.

it's just that i have always hated wendy's voice. it's their most mature solo record of the first three they did, but i always thought it was a mistake to have wendy sing everything.

sound wise it's alittle too compressed or insular to me. but there are some great racks on it and their b-sides for this record were good too.

I don't hate Wendy's voice, but I know what you mean. In fact, I like Wendy's voice somewhat, but it gets tiresome when you hear it too much in a row. As much as I love both W&L, the vocals have affected the enjoyment of their albums a lot for me.

My least favourite Wendy & Lisa album. The songs go nowhere. Sorry.

This album was absolute perfection. In the top 5 of all time greatest albums EVER.
I am convinced Beyonce's career would not be where it is, if she had dark skin.

There's a great rack on the cover. razz

It's hard for me to decide which Wendy & Lisa album is my favorite. In fact if I had to rank the four studio albums, this one might come last. But the margin between each of the four is so small--it's like comparing the scores of 9.75 to 9.5 to 9.25 to 9.0.

love this cd myself. Shame they broke down a lot of walls for women in the late 80's - early 90s in music but didn't get credit for it.
