Cora Coleman-Dunham vs. Cindy Blackman

vs.
Prince's drummer vs. Lenny Kravitz's ex-drummer. Since the general consensus seems to be that Sheila is the best female drummer in the biz, which sista is the runner up?
Who's got more skillz to pay the bills?
DISCUSS.

I have to say Cindy Blackman because the woman is BAD! I've seen her perform with Lenny Kravitz and Skin when they did the remake of the Betty Davis song "Anti-Love Song". Plus, when she was with Lenny she was bad then too. My two favorite songs from her are "All I Want" and "Multiplicity". I am not familiar with Cora's drumming skills, but I will check her out. smile

I would have to pick Cindy Blackman all the way, she is BAAAD! Even when she is playing a "simple" beat it just grooves and stands out. She is an incredible drummer. As for Cora, I'm sure she's an excellent musician, otherwise she wouldn't be P's drummer, but in all the performances I've seen of her with P., she just doesn't stand out. Don't know if it's on purpose or what, she may very well be able to do some flashy drumming and I just haven't seen it, but Cindy Blackman's drumming ALWAYS sounds incredible everytime I've seen her, regardless of the song.

I don't know enough about Cora's musical background pre-Prince, and I haven't seen her perform live.

Cindy Blackman is not only a solid rock drummer, but she's got great jazz chops and has her own career going in that world.

I like both of their styles. It's hard to say who's better. Skills-wise, They're about the same. I also like the woman who plays drums for Kid Rock's band. Now she's BAAAAAD!

falloff

i didn't mean it as a diss (nor a statement towards her talent)...its just...well, she doesn't look like a rock star at all...its kinda surprising to see her all up in the mix. most of prince's drummers have had a certain level of edge and she doesnt.

By the way. Does anyone know the reason why Cindy Blackmon left Lenny Kravitz's band? Just curious.

Aside from Morris Hayes, do any of his band members these days?

Short answer: Just watch the Superbowl or watch AND listen to Cora improvise during a jazz set.

But how old is that pic of Cora because she does not look like that now??? I've been seeing her up close for the past year and a half. She's also super tiny, I think she's shorter than the twins and nowhere as thick as she looks in pics and on TV.

This is kinda funny because FOLEY would prolly be the only one
to really answer this question, seeing as how Cindy replaced Cora
in his 2pc. band "The Difference" as Cora went on to join Prince.
and, Foley's band the Difference was one of the reasons she left Lenny's band.

confuse Maybe the most well known female drummer.

Terri Lyne Carrington...

...(Lester Bowie, Pharoah Sanders, Mike Stern, John Scofield, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock)

Kim Thompson...

...(Roy Hargrove, Meshell N'Degeocello, Kenny Barron, Wallace Roney, Mike Stern)

Yvette "Baby Girl" Preyer...

...(Isaac Hayes, Michael McDonald)

hmmm The above 3 (just to name a few) could just as well contend for that title.

However given the 2 choices, you couldn't lose with Ms Blackman...

...(Jackie McLean, Joe Henderson, Don Pullen, Hugh Masekela, Pharaoh Sanders, Sam Rivers, Cassandra Wilson, Angela Bofill, Bill Laswell, Buckethead, Jean-Paul Bourelly)

Or Cora Coleman-Dunham - (Yusef Lateef, Greg Osby, Donald Byrd, Grady Tate, Phil Upchurch, Pink, Foley, Lalah Hathaway, Frank McComb).

I might be a little partial to Ms. Blackman cause homegirl rocks the NY logo so well...love

I have to agree with you Emilio, Cora is great but Cindy Blackman is untouchable. She's a hot mama that knows how to work the sticks! I've only seen her play with Lenny but I've seen her enought that I've been completely impressed if not blown away
cool

She actually does very flashy drumming, ala John Blackwell, when it's appropriate but Prince is NOT showcasing any of the bandmembers during televised events. Even when you see them live in concerts or shows he doesn't really give any of them major solos like I've seen in the past. However, the aftershows are a COMPLETELY different story because that's when EVERY band member is given an opportunity to shine and do their thing. And Cora excels in the aftershows. All I'm saying is that it's hard to see a musician's personality if the BOSS is not allowing that to happen in the main shows.
