Out of Shelia E., Micheal B., Bobby Z., Kirky J. and John Blackwell,. Who was
in your opinion ,was your all time favorite behind the Drum Kit, who was the most memorable, talented or the first that comes to mind when you think of his past bands?

now be honest, sheila on nostalgia/one of your favorite ppl grounds, or technical excellence in concert AND on wax (records for the yung uns)? i ain't hatin' on the sister at all ("not bad, for a girl..."), and i saw the Lovesexy tour when her drum set was suspended above the arena, spinning and glowing in the dark with her goin' NUTS, but for me it's Michael B.

Same thoughts here...Sheila is great, and there´s a lot of nostalgia but MY favorite drummer is Michael B. , which doesn´t mean Sheila is worse than him, but I LOVE that sound when Prince, Sonny and Mike B. play together.

For me , it´s either Prince, Eric Leeds AND Sheila, or Prince, Sonny and Michael B.
Any other combination just doesn´t cut it.

Up to Round 3 at the moment. Currently the only drummers to be eliminated are Cora and Kirk Johnson.

1. Michael Bland -- he has such a powerful touch, conveys power and accuracy and authority on everything from blues to simmering seduction numbers and bombastic funk when it's needed.

2. Mr. Blackwell -- that dude brought some much-needed life to Prince's studio work, after a stale period of uninspired drum programming. TRC works, in large part, because of his gifted playing.

3. Prince -- dude's touch on his early stuff was raw, funky and loose.

4. Sheila -- I like her touch. Though, she struck me as more a rock drummer than anything else.

Gotta agree with you there. Although I do love Blackwells style.

Have you heard "Shhhh"???
That opening drum solo always always bring chills down my spine...

Michael B had a thread here a while ago and when I asked if it was him on the studio version of "Shhhh" he admitted it.
I asked did Prince play the solo just the way he wanted it or was Michael allowed to improvised. It is my recollection, that the answer was that Prince would have his band come up with their own things when there was a spot for a "solo" and then would listen to the tapes to approve or disapprove.

MY QUESTION IS.... how does one "hear" that mind blasting solo before a note was ever played???? How did he CREATE that???

Amazing! Michael B is the best.

John Blackwell plays the Best Drum Line for "777-9311" and He is Extraordinary
Showman on the drums: playing with one stick in his mouth, twirling and never losing pace. That is why under the liner notes of The Rainbow Children album, His name is listed at John the Magnificent and He is probably one of the most humble people that You would ever want to meet.

Sheila E.

Not only does she kill it, she does it all wearing heels.

yes
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

SHEILA E by a lo-o-o-o-n-g shot!

as a big time drum fan, the others are very fogetable, But Sheila has style all her own.-- a bad ass style to be exact!, the others sound generic, great but,
G E N E R I C, thats the best word to describe them, session musicians nothing more nothing less,

and im pretty sure all the cats mentioned above would agree with that

like i said b4, i ain't hating on sheila, she's nice wit hers, and i UNDERSTAND how hard it is to resist a sexy female doin' her thing on an instrument. wendy isn't particularly sexy to me, but at times with that GEETAR, she was as sexy as Susannah. so that's why she's getting some of the male votes, gender unity from the females and sentimentality from all others. but anywho, like i said, it's Michael Bland. he exudes POWER on the kit. makes you pay attention even when the drums aren't dominant in the song. He plays like the big fella he is with presence!
