The Family is back!!!

Seen this over on the GBN MySpace page and now it's on Housequake too. This was Jesse's post:

As some of you know, I run the GBNetwork My Space page (www.myspace.com/girlbrosnetwork) and we help promote Wendy and Lisa. Well today I heard from Susannah and St Paul and they wanted me to let everyone know that the FAMILY has reunited! They are putting out a new record and are going out on the road and they will "work the family record the way it should have been worked awhile back."

We will put out all the details as soon as they become available. Anyone who caught them at the Family Jamm knows, that this group sounds better than ever and this is going to be A LOT OF FUN to watch unfold! A big WELCOME BACK to the Family!!!!"

This is going to be amazing!

AAAAAarrrrrggggghhhhh!!!! How fucking awesome!!! Been waiting for the news to make it here from the GBN page!!!

So, so, so excited about the prospect. I was not a fan of the Family until I saw them perform at the Family Jamm. They blew me away. Can't wait to hear the fruits of their reunion and pray to see them live again.

A great kickoff to 2007.

Oh that is so cool they are going to perform again.!!! Its about time. I hope that they get enough support to do a mini-tour across the USA as it said in that message that they are going to be on the road so I am assuming that they are going to perform outside of Cali as well. I am definately going to buy their album.

AntiConservative: grow up.

This is magnificent news. Irrelevant of Prince's involvement. The Family is a wonderful album. It is a shame that the project died the death it did. If the original members of the group can revive its spirit and, possibly, the potential popularity of the project then all is well in heaven and its five circles.

I think what they mean is,they're gonna actually promote the record the way it should have been promoted.Back in 1985,Paul Peterson and the other members were disappointed with the lack of promotion their album received.Prince was spreading himself too thin....filming 'Under The Cherry Moon',recording 'Parade',doing occasional gigs,AND trying to run a record company. As a result, the Family album came and went without making any impact. They don't want the same thing to happen this time.

This is great news for Family fams. They, along with Prince put 2gether a decent set of music. It was truly a shame that they put 2gether the best version of 'Nothing Compares 2 U' and most people have never heard it. If they can work with P and put 2gether some new tracks, that would be fantastic.

If they are bitter, who could blame them. I'm sure they worked pretty hard 2 put the album out and P pretty much gives them the Heisman because it conflicts with completing the 'Under The Cherry Moon' project. He's a great musician but u kinda have to admit that when he gets bored with or something more enticing comes along he tends to bail on certain projects.

According to Paul Peterson, the promotion for the Family album was non-existent.They did a video for the first single "Screams Of Passion" and played one gig at First Avenue. He angrily called Prince on the phone while he was in France filming 'Under The Cherry Moon'.He told Prince "You can't do a million things at one time",and Prince replied "Oh yes I can.I did it with the Time.I did it with Sheila E" neutral After this heated conversation,Paul quit the band and they broke up.

The Family has long been my favorite Prince side project. I don't know how great they'd be after so many years, but I'd certainly give them a chance. If Susannah is doing the songwriting, then it certainly could be good.

Susannah's a pretty strong songwriter in her own right, having had songs recorded by William Orbit, Madonna, Doyle Bramhall II, Prince, and Eric Clapton among others.

Hmm. I'd love to see the new Family do a version of Susannah's "Violets". That would be awesome.

He had to have known then, I'm sure. cool

And for those interested in what he's been doing, he's mostly been into
producing all these years, and he still sings with his real family as well...
they're all musical...brothers, sisters, mother. He's written many songs
for them and their musical endeavors.

I met him at his family's Christmas Concert....and btw, he has a nice
residence in the Minneapolis area..no van. wink lol

Cool - thanks for the update. It's great that you got to meet St. Paul. It sounds like he's doing well, which is good to hear. It would be a neat to be part of a family that was all involved in music in some way.

To boot, he's one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet...he's very
comfortable within himself, albeit still a bit shy.

It was a great few moments for me...thanks... cool

You do raise a good point though in that if Prince isn't involved, who will be doing the songwriting? Paul? I wasn't that impressed with his first solo album.

Y'know, I have a Doyle album and never bothered to look at the songwriting credits. razz

I don't think Jellybean and Jerome worked that hard. Are they even on the first album at all?

While they appear in the credits, they did not actually play on the album. It was pretty much just Eric and Prince playing, with Paul & Susannah on vocals.

Jellybean DID play at their one and only show at First Avenue.

And isn't it funny that 20plus years later their new album is going to be promoted the way their old should have been---by hyping up the Prince connection!

Local radio station--
Up next , a new song by the band that first recorded "Nothing Compares 2 U" back in 1985 when they were put together by Prince. For all the young people that don't know, Prince is the guy that performed at the Super Bowl in 2007. Anyway, man, here's the new song

A side project Prince did in 1985, shortly after the break-up of The Time. It featured "St." Paul Peterson and Susannah Melvoin on vocals with Eric Leeds on Sax. Officially, Jellybean Johnson and Jerome Benton were members as well, although they didn't actually play on the album. The album is significant in that it was the first time that Prince used the Clare Fisher orchestra. It is also notable for featuring the original recording of "Nothing Compares 2 U", several years before Sinead O'Connor would have a hit with it.

A single for "The Screams of Passion" was released, with a subsequent video. For some weird reason, Prince had Eric Leeds mime playing bass in the clip

I'll get excited about this project when they reissue to the public the "Family" cd from Paisley Park, INCLUDING the 12" extended version of "screams of passion"..

then as far as the tour &/or a new album,
let's see if (or for how long) you-know-who can keep his flawlessly manicured, stubby, controlling little fingers off "his" band..
if he muscles his way in, it will probably end like it did 22 years ago :

Sorry to say (for 'them') but of course the Family album from 1985 was a Prince album. A sometimes genious experiment to mix the Minneapolis sound with real orchestral arrangements by Clare Fisher. And therefore a blueprint for a lot of the music on Parade, The Jill Jones album and parts of Lovesexy.

Some tracks were predating his Jazz-funk work with Madhouse, and were a result of him trying out things with Eric Leeds.

St. Paul is not a bad singer, but on the album he is obviously 'copying' the vocal tracks Prince layed out on the basic tracks. His solowork after that is often not more then very cheesy eighties-funkpop.
What dit we really hear from Susannah after this album. She might have written some nice tracks for others, and has performed some decent background vocals on the albums of Wendy and Lisa. But not much more.
According to the reports Jellybean Johnson and Jerome Benton (does he even 'play' an instrument?) weren't even on the album!

To conclude:
- Yes, please, release this fine album on CD.
- Don't expect some brilliant new music from the Family, its probably best they limit themselves to performing on the Minneapolis club circuit.

Well, the thing about The Family was that they rehearsed the shit out of that band, and Prince had just stopped paying attention to them due to negligence. When it ended, it probably seemed like a waste of alot of hard work. I bet they always regretted not touring. The Family Jamm show having been so sucessful, I bet they are doing this project now merely for the fun of it, it's not like it's gonna make them tons of money or anything. That's a great reason to have a band!

Paul Peterson (lead singer) left the band a few months after their album was released. He was disappointed with the lack of promotion and felt that Prince wasn't giving them enough attention. The band broke up...Jerome,Susannah and Eric joined Prince's band while Paul went solo.Prince was pissed at Paul for leaving, filing a lawsuit against him and even writing a song about Paul's departure ("Dream Factory").

So will a new Time album be next? Will Prince be a part of it?

Being this is a Prince group (for lack of a better term), will Prince have any input to this project?

From the artwork for Guitar...to the reunion of The Family.... as an observation, it would appear as though Prince may be going old school....purging out the old to make room for the new....

Will there be a reunion of the Revolution too? Wendy and Lisa definately have been working with Prince in the past year.... hmmm

Wait a minute... we're talking apples to oranges! The difference here is that the Bangles were already a successful group when Prince wrote "Manic Monday" for them. (That song took them to #2 on the pop charts.) Their first #1 was with "Walk Like An Egyptian". Other than dating Susannah Hoffs for a bit and writing "Manic Monday", he really had nothing else to do with them.

They did get together for a reunion tour to some success.- and Susannah still looks hot! lick

The numbers after the title of the song indicate their placement on the US charts first, then UK. Okay, so their first big hit was with Prince, but, it's not like he was responsible for their career. By the way, the only thing that kept "Manic Monday" from going to number one was PRINCE! He was busy at number one with "Kiss".

If Prince isn't involved (and there seem to be no plans to include him), imagine if they were able to get Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to produce a few of the tracks! Get Jerome and St. Paul to make a few phone calls and see what they can throw on the skillet.

I think the Family should produce themselves. Paul is very accomplished, working as Donny Osmond's musical director (among other things), and Jellybean is a producer. I would like to hear what they come up with just sounding like The Family, without outside interference. I don't think they should try to be pure funk, since they have so many other influences between them.

Just my 2cents!

Exactly. In the whole history of the Bangles, which is actually pretty interesting, Prince's involvement is just a little blip.

ANYWAY, this is supposed to be about The Family smile.

For those of us who closely followed the Paisley machine around the time of Parade, The Family was one of the best things that materialized. So what if Prince isn't involved this time around - I think it could be far more interesting without him. HOWEVER, I would love to see them do select dates with Prince, like the Time did on the Musicology tour.

To clear a few things up, this is what I can tell you officially:

The band will include all 5 original members:
St Paul
Susannah Melvoin
Eric Leeds
Jellybean Johnson
Jerome Benton

*They only finally agreed amongst themselves to do this as of last friday...

*The bands overall goal goes way beyond being merely a "revival group"...

*There is no new record...yet. But there has been talk of working a new album by late summer 2007...

*Meanwhile, keep your eyes and ears peeled for potential upcoming club appearances just to "get their feet back under them"...

*There may be an official announcement of an L.A. appearance in the surprisingly near future. Details to follow...

Thanks for the official word.

Personally, I think this is all very good news. I think pretty much all of the former Prince associates have done their best work developing their own sounds. The last two W&L albums, for example, are worlds away from that they did with Prince, and should be -- they've had two decades to grow and evolve as musicians. I know that Susannah's songwriting has really taken on a flavor of its own that is worlds away from her Prince years; I personally hope that The Family can be a vehicle for that. I'd also love to see more of what Eric Leeds can do after all these years; he's always been one of the more independent of the bunch, and The Family, Madhouse and his own albums have whet my appetite for more.

I think the best music is likely to come of this collaboration if all these musicians bring their 20 new years' experience to the table. My expectation is that Prince would hinder rather than help that process, so I don't see a lack of Prince involvement as a problem.

St. Paul's newsletter will have information regarding the upcoming LA appearance. You can sign up for it at www.stpaulmusic.com.

Paul is an amazing producer and has a full studio of his own. I think with all the talent in the 5 group members, this project doesn't need any other influence or involvement. They'll do just fine on their own!

Can't wait for the "classics" from the first album, can't wait for the new stuff.

I just saw Paul with the Truth this past Saturday at Bunkers and they did a LOT of Family stuff (they usually do). Jellybean, Eric and St. Paul were all present and they were off the hook! High Fashion/Mutiny was amazing. The dance floor was packed all night and they did 3 long sets. I can't wait to hear it all with The Family together as a tight 5!

I love me some Prince, BUT I really want to hear what they do on their own!

I was in MN in August and my friend said The Truth was performing at Traccado's(sp?) on Thursday night. So I was soooo pumped up for this, and we pull up to the club/restaurant and I said to my friend there arn't many cars outside the club. So I had a really bad feeling already, we went inside and my friend had the wrong information. They had been performing on Thursday's but that ended like a month ago. sad There went all my hopes and dreams of seeing Paul and the rest of the musicians. bawl That was supposed to be the highlight of my vacation.

biggrin This is fantastic news! "The Family" is one of my all-time cherished albums and it is high-quality with timeless songs (e.g., NC2U, Mutiny, Screams of Passion). Just love, love this album and it was a nice addition to Paisley Park's musical history (not to mention Prince's compositions and musical direction) at a time when we were saddened to learn The Time had disbanded. St. Paul's vocals are some of the most soulful and funky I've heard from a whiteboy (smile) anywhere. Who knew, back then, that the boy was so talented!! Love this guy. Susannah was beautiful and sultry (and screamed well), Jerome, Eric, Jellybean where in a word....chocolate.

Hope this prospect really does comes true.

Peace my peoples.

There is indeed a date listed. Here is a copy of that info:

"Questlove, drummer and producer for the highly respected hip hop group "The Roots," has invited us to kick off this project with the opportunity to play at the biggest pre-Grammy Party of the year in LA Feb 10th. "

The news just made Metafilter today http://www.metafilter.com and guess where they link to for the official news source...Prince.org biggrin

'The Family' Has Reunited. Members of the studio band created in the wake of The Time's disintegration, who never toured and who only released one self-titled album (featuring the beautiful photography of Horst and lavish orchestration by Clare Fischer, like much of Prince's other projects at the time) have reunited. No word yet about any involvement from either Prince (writer of nearly all the band's songs, including their gigantic hit Nothing Compares 2 U - well, at least for Sinead O'Connor) or his Revolution cohorts Wendy (twin sister of Family co-lead vocalist Susannah Melvoin) & Lisa, now a successful scoring team for film and television.

My name is Neil Richards and I'm St Paul's friend and manager. The news above is on the money.

The band is getting back together, they are going to play a short set at Questlove's Grammy Party in LA next week, they are planning on doing some more shows and they may do a new CD later this year. They are all very good friends and really want to work together. The idea was hatched very very recently and everyone is very excited.

If they do an album it will not be dated. It will sound like The Family but will still be contemporary. The people lining up to work with the group is impressive to say the least! At this stage it would be remiss to speculate about Prince's involvement. Jerome is no longer in The Time but Jellybean will continue to play with Morris and the fellas (one more rumour stopped!).

The LA show will feature the 5 original members along with Kat Dyson and the 2members of Sheila E's band who performed with them at The Familly Jamm.

Paul is always very busy and will continue to work on his other projects hand in hand with his role in The Family. And if you want to know what Paul has been up to check out www.stpaulproductions.com or www.stpaulmusic.com. The former talks more about Paul's studio work and has my contact details listed for those interested.

And if you want to know what Paul has been up to check out www.stpaulproductions.com or www.stpaulmusic.com. The former talks more about Paul's studio work and has my contact details listed for those interested.

Thanks! I hope they play New York!! And re-release the Family CD and St. Paul's debut!

Also, I know Paul has been a prolific musician since then.

But question: I've read he wrote 2 of Paula Abdul's songs (Oppossites atract, foever your girl) but the copyright only shows Oliver Leiber. Why is that?

um.... why? not that their album isn't great, but.... um, they didn't actually DO anything.

That's a great reason to have a band!

yeah, i understand that. but they weren't even really a band at the time. songs by Prince. performed by Prince (and a few others). vocals re-recorded by Paul, imitating Prince's original lead vocal. an excuse to put out a tester album for Eric Leeds.

The Family's album is fucking fantastic, but it has little or nothing to do with any of the actual members of the group lol

Not sure about The Family at this stage but we have made enquiries about re-issuing the 'St Paul' album. If we are able to license this CD then we would include the 12 inch versions of the singles too.

Folks who keep asking for as Family re-issue please keep in mind that Prince owns the rights to that album and would have to work with Warner to re-issue.

and we know how that goes...

Every word is true, but I can't help getting excited about them touring (even though I'm sure it will be a let down!).

I saw them at the Family Jamm. You will not be disappointed. I promise.

I hope that there would be a Family Jamm 2 in the future. I am going to do whatever it takes to see those bands, if they agreed to perform the second time around. I talked from other people who was at the first one of how good and impressd of the Family's performance.

A big WELCOME BACK to the Family!!!!"

well I'll be dammned...

the Family huh?

Well The Family's record was EASILY my favorite of all of the Prince 'side project' albums...well maybe tied with The Time's first two records...but i don't know though, I think the Family's record 'as a whole' may actually age a teeny bit better than either of the Times records 'as a whole' (of course 'Get It Up' and '777-9311' indivedually will always be hard to beat by anything and are straught up classics.) But 'Screams Of Passion' ain't nothin to sneeze at either...

I'm looking forward to hearing how they sound (and to seeing Suzannah again too wink

Uh... okay. Is this a slam at Prince? Um, Prince created The Family. Prince wrote them their one and only hit... so... rolleyes Nice way to announce a "come back". Sounds kinda bitter to me.

...and another thing... why is this front page news? A sticky would have sufficed. confused

Bitter, but maybe justified. Prince allowed no personal expression of his protege's then... The Family was a talented group who had to do Prince's bidding. Prince created them, but could have let them develop & grow, as he did with The Time. No-one knows the real deal but Prince and The Family, though.

Front page news is deserving of this announcement. Many Prince fans have always appreciated The Family. I think it was the funkiest Prince record ever, and it's not entirely because of Prince. Great collaborators there - too bad they didn't get the chance to develop. Maybe now they can do some nice stuff.

As before, this is very exciting news. I'm glad it's happening.

I'm very interested in the information, but my "Friends" requests to the official MySpace page keep going missing.

I'm positive that it must be a mistake of some kind, as that's not the kind of thing an "official" site would do; just not good business or PR sense. JessE, when you have a sec can you let me know what's going on?

Thanks

giggle Not sure what Paul did after quitting the Family. I know he released several solo albums, but I don't think they sold very well, unfortunately.

Seriously, some of you laugh at this, but being Donny Osmond's musical director has likely been a really good gig for Paul. He played bass in the house band on the Donny & Marie talk show in the 90s, and I believe he's been touring with Donny ever since. Donny has quite a following, and the Osmonds are HUGE in the UK. I'm sure Paul is doing just fine.

I thought St.Paul sued Prince for breaking his career years ago. And now all of a sudden they are friends again? If so, there is definitly hope for all of the wars in the world. Love thy enemy.... cool

But seriously, I adored the Family's record and played it over and over again. Even before Skinhead O'Conner wrecked the most beautiful song in the world that's on it. The original sounds so much better...

Hmm. I'm wondering where you got this idea.

I'm not saying that St. Paul and Prince aren't friendly again -- I have no way of knowing -- but I certainly haven't seen anything in this thread that tells me they are or really says anything at all about Prince's role in this, if any.

I hate to contribute to rumours, but if anything I thought Prince sued Paul for breach of contract when he "quit", not the other way around.

At any rate, I would guess they are on good terms now....but i really don't know.

Paul seems like a really great, nice and real guy so I doubt he harbours bad feelings. Similarly, Prince seems to be getting over stuff with past associates as well (e.g. W&L).

At the Family Jamm, Sheila's bassist sat in with them and Miko Weaver played guitar. I think some of the other keyboard players from Sheila's house band also supported them (as a keyboard player, I know it's hard to hold down all those parts by yourself!!!) Actually, if you watched closely, Sheila snuck on stage and played even more keys during Mutiny..... she later told me it was so funky she couldn't control herself! I dont blame her! But most of us did't know she played keys!

Actually, during one song Eric played keys a little too when he wasn't blowing (I think it was Screams of Passion).

In the post from Paul's manager above, I think he mentions that some of Sheila's peeps will be rounding at the backing band.

You know during the famous one night only Family concert back in 1985, Wendy and Susannah's brother Jonathan (RIP), and another guy whom I can't remember played keys (in addiiton to Paul playing a little too on a couple songs)....not sure who played guitar back then (possibly Miko).

Jellybean will most surely play drums.... I think Paul's favorite instrument is bass, although he plays guitar and keys too.

In his solo DVD which you can buy from his website, he actually plays bass and sings the whole time.... even during Jungle Love!!! Very impressive!
