Uh... okay. Is this a slam at Prince? Um, Prince created The Family. Prince wrote them their one and only hit... so... ...and another thing... why is this front page news? A sticky would have sufficed. I feel the opposite. This news is bigger to me than a new Prince album. You do raise a good point though in that if Prince isn't involved, who will be doing the songwriting? Paul? I wasn't that impressed with his first solo album. |
I'm loving this and I hope they play somewhere near Ohio so I can catch them!

As some of you know, I run the GBNetwork My Space page (www.myspace.com/girlbrosnetwork) and we help promote Wendy and Lisa. They are putting out a new record and are going out on the road and they will "work the family record the way it should have been worked awhile back." We will put out all the details as soon as they become available. She got some mad songwriting skills. Ask Madonna. |
This is great news.... I flew from NY to Cali to see these guys play at the Family Jam... next to seeing The Revolution play, The Family was my second reason for making that trip.. |

I've often wondered if construction of a red lightsaber takes place before you can become a Republican, or is it something you do after initiation. Dah, well... |
Adisa has it spot on. Only people who know the band's history will buy new material... unless they manufacture something great that puts them in the music spotlight. Until that time this is huge Prince news. "words are like shoes, they're just something you stand on." |
its cool and all but i would be more jonzed about a pacifico or funksway album/tour.

I would love it if they could release the new cd along with the original Family cd in a two cd package! I'll also settle for just the new cd. |
I hear they're booked to play county fairs, Jr. High School dances, various charity galas, Jewish community centers and "commercial events" accross the midwest this Spring and Summer!!! |

I think what they mean is,they're gonna actually promote the record the way it should have been promoted.Back in 1985,Paul Peterson and the other members were disappointed with the lack of promotion their album received.Prince was spreading himself too thin....filming 'Under The Cherry Moon',recording 'Parade',doing occasional gigs,AND trying to run a record company. As a result, the Family album came and went without making any impact. They don't want the same thing to happen this time. |
This is great news for Family fams. They, along with Prince put 2gether a decent set of music. It was truly a shame that they put 2gether the best version of 'Nothing Compares 2 U' and most people have never heard it. If they can work with P and put 2gether some new tracks, that would be fantastic.

The Family has long been my favorite Prince side project. I don't know how great they'd be after so many years, but I'd certainly give them a chance. If Susannah is doing the songwriting, then it certainly could be good. I met St.Paul about 6 weeks ago, and in our short conversation, we touched on The Family album, and immediately I saw a glimmer in his eyes. He had to have known then, I'm sure. And for those interested in what he's been doing, he's mostly been into producing all these years, and he still sings with his real family as well... they're all musical...brothers, sisters, mother. He's written many songs for them and their musical endeavors. I met him at his family's Christmas Concert....and btw, he has a nice residence in the Minneapolis area..no van. Cool - thanks for the update. It's great that you got to meet St. Paul. It sounds like he's doing well, which is good to hear. It would be a neat to be part of a family that was all involved in music in some way. Irish Diplomacy: The art of telling someone to go to hell, and having them look forward to the trip. And isn't it funny that 20plus years later their new album is going to be promoted the way their old should have been---by hyping up the Prince connection! Local radio station-- Up next , a new song by the band that first recorded "Nothing Compares 2 U" back in 1985 when they were put together by Prince. For all the young people that don't know, Prince is the guy that performed at the Super Bowl in 2007. Anyway, man, here's the new song I've often wondered if construction of a red lightsaber takes place before you can become a Republican, or is it something you do after initiation. Dah, well... |

A side project Prince did in 1985, shortly after the break-up of The Time. It featured "St." Paul Peterson and Susannah Melvoin on vocals with Eric Leeds on Sax. Officially, Jellybean Johnson and Jerome Benton were members as well, although they didn't actually play on the album. The album is significant in that it was the first time that Prince used the Clare Fisher orchestra. It is also notable for featuring the original recording of "Nothing Compares 2 U", several years before Sinead O'Connor would have a hit with it. A single for "The Screams of Passion" was released, with a subsequent video. For some weird reason, Prince had Eric Leeds mime playing bass in the clip You can see the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmyWTmDB_6U Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. So if Prince and Eric worked pretty hard to put out the first album then Prince gave himself the shaft by not promoting it. |

If they were smart they would re-release their first album. Who is going to write their new music? Is it still going to be R&B? |
I'll get excited about this project when they reissue to the public the "Family" cd from Paisley Park, INCLUDING the 12" extended version of "screams of passion"..

Does anybody have any info on the relationship between the Family and Prince? Did the relationship end on a good or bad note? why did they originally break up? All I remember is them releasing two singles then they disappeared. |
Sorry to say (for 'them') but of course the Family album from 1985 was a Prince album. A sometimes genious experiment to mix the Minneapolis sound with real orchestral arrangements by Clare Fisher. And therefore a blueprint for a lot of the music on Parade, The Jill Jones album and parts of Lovesexy.

Some tracks were predating his Jazz-funk work with Madhouse, and were a result of him trying out things with Eric Leeds. St. Paul is not a bad singer, but on the album he is obviously 'copying' the vocal tracks Prince layed out on the basic tracks. His solowork after that is often not more then very cheesy eighties-funkpop. What dit we really hear from Susannah after this album. She might have written some nice tracks for others, and has performed some decent background vocals on the albums of Wendy and Lisa. But not much more. According to the reports Jellybean Johnson and Jerome Benton (does he even 'play' an instrument?) weren't even on the album! To conclude: - Yes, please, release this fine album on CD. - Don't expect some brilliant new music from the Family, its probably best they limit themselves to performing on the Minneapolis club circuit. Every word is true, but I can't help getting excited about them touring (even though I'm sure it will be a let down!). . |

Well, the thing about The Family was that they rehearsed the shit out of that band, and Prince had just stopped paying attention to them due to negligence. When it ended, it probably seemed like a waste of alot of hard work. I bet they always regretted not touring. The Family Jamm show having been so sucessful, I bet they are doing this project now merely for the fun of it, it's not like it's gonna make them tons of money or anything. That's a great reason to have a band! |

Paul Peterson (lead singer) left the band a few months after their album was released. He was disappointed with the lack of promotion and felt that Prince wasn't giving them enough attention. The band broke up...Jerome,Susannah and Eric joined Prince's band while Paul went solo.Prince was pissed at Paul for leaving, filing a lawsuit against him and even writing a song about Paul's departure ("Dream Factory"). . The numbers after the title of the song indicate their placement on the US charts first, then UK. Okay, so their first big hit was with Prince, but, it's not like he was responsible for their career. By the way, the only thing that kept "Manic Monday" from going to number one was PRINCE! He was busy at number one with "Kiss".

I think the Family should produce themselves. Paul is very accomplished, working as Donny Osmond's musical director (among other things), and Jellybean is a producer. I would like to hear what they come up with just sounding like The Family, without outside interference. I don't think they should try to be pure funk, since they have so many other influences between them. Just my 2cents! Jeff |

Details to follow... Thanks for the official word. Personally, I think this is all very good news. I think pretty much all of the former Prince associates have done their best work developing their own sounds. The last two W&L albums, for example, are worlds away from that they did with Prince, and should be -- they've had two decades to grow and evolve as musicians. I know that Susannah's songwriting has really taken on a flavor of its own that is worlds away from her Prince years; I personally hope that The Family can be a vehicle for that. I'd also love to see more of what Eric Leeds can do after all these years; he's always been one of the more independent of the bunch, and The Family, Madhouse and his own albums have whet my appetite for more. I think the best music is likely to come of this collaboration if all these musicians bring their 20 new years' experience to the table. My expectation is that Prince would hinder rather than help that process, so I don't see a lack of Prince involvement as a problem. |

I saw them at the Family Jamm. You will not be disappointed. I promise. Not sure about The Family at this stage but we have made enquiries about re-issuing the 'St Paul' album. If we are able to license this CD then we would include the 12 inch versions of the singles too. [Edited 2/2/07 0:18am] Ok, cool. Thanks again! I am going to do whatever it takes to see those bands, if they agreed to perform the second time around. I talked from other people who was at the first one of how good and impressd of the Family's performance. |

As some of you know, I run the GBNetwork My Space page (www.myspace.com/girlbrosnetwork) and we help promote Wendy and Lisa. Well today I heard from Susannah and St Paul and they wanted me to let everyone know that the FAMILY has reunited! They are putting out a new record and are going out on the road and they will "work the family record the way it should have been worked awhile back." We will put out all the details as soon as they become available. Anyone who caught them at the Family Jamm knows, that this group sounds better than ever and this is going to be A LOT OF FUN to watch unfold! A big WELCOME BACK to the Family!!!!" This is going to be amazing! NO FUCKING WAY larry luvlife

You read wrong. There was never a Japanese pressing with "The Screams Of Passion" (Extended Mix) on it, just a fan release... . |
Who plays bass with them? |

Uh... okay. Is this a slam at Prince? Um, Prince created The Family. Prince wrote them their one and only hit... so... ...and another thing... why is this front page news? A sticky would have sufficed. Bitter, but maybe justified. Prince allowed no personal expression of his protege's then... The Family was a talented group who had to do Prince's bidding. Prince created them, but could have let them develop & grow, as he did with The Time. No-one knows the real deal but Prince and The Family, though. Front page news is deserving of this announcement. Many Prince fans have always appreciated The Family. I think it was the funkiest Prince record ever, and it's not entirely because of Prince. Great collaborators there - too bad they didn't get the chance to develop. Maybe now they can do some nice stuff. |
KidOmega said: JudasLChrist said: Well, the thing about The Family was that they rehearsed the shit out of that band, and Prince had just stopped paying attention to them due to negligence. When it ended, it probably seemed like a waste of alot of hard work. I bet they always regretted not touring. The Family Jamm show having been so sucessful, I bet they are doing this project now merely for the fun of it, it's not like it's gonna make them tons of money or anything. That's a great reason to have a band! yeah, i understand that. but they weren't even really a band at the time. songs by Prince. performed by Prince (and a few others). vocals re-recorded by Paul, imitating Prince's original lead vocal. an excuse to put out a tester album for Eric Leeds. The Family's album is fucking fantastic, but it has little or nothing to do with any of the actual members of the group You can almost say the same thing for The Time and Sheila E's debut albums...etc...etc... I saw The Family perform at The Family Jamm a few years back and they almost stole the f**kin show!!! Rumour is they are going to visit the UK/Europe... I'll be first in the queue!!! Welcome back The Family!! [Edited 2/3/07 22:49pm] The DAWN Experience www.thedawnexperience.co.uk

as far as "promotion" ... i remember working in a small radio station back then and i thought it was promoted well ... i remember playin "screams of passion " a few times .... of course i thought it ... "eh" for Prince ... but hey what do i know .... Seriously, some of you laugh at this, but being Donny Osmond's musical director has likely been a really good gig for Paul. He played bass in the house band on the Donny & Marie talk show in the 90s, and I believe he's been touring with Donny ever since. Donny has quite a following, and the Osmonds are HUGE in the UK. I'm sure Paul is doing just fine. Jeff |
Paul needs to re-release his first solo album, and include the extended mix of "Intimacy". Now that is a jam. |
I thought St.Paul sued Prince for breaking his career years ago. And now all of a sudden they are friends again? If so, there is definitly hope for all of the wars in the world. Love thy enemy.... |

Hmm. I'm wondering where you got this idea. I'm not saying that St. Paul and Prince aren't friendly again -- I have no way of knowing -- but I certainly haven't seen anything in this thread that tells me they are or really says anything at all about Prince's role in this, if any. |

I hate to contribute to rumours, but if anything I thought Prince sued Paul for breach of contract when he "quit", not the other way around. At any rate, I would guess they are on good terms now....but i really don't know. Paul seems like a really great, nice and real guy so I doubt he harbours bad feelings. Similarly, Prince seems to be getting over stuff with past associates as well (e.g. W&L). |

IDEJJD said: calldapplwondery83 said: Who plays bass with them?
Jellybean is a great bass player.... At the Family Jamm, Sheila's bassist sat in with them and Miko Weaver played guitar. I think some of the other keyboard players from Sheila's house band also supported them (as a keyboard player, I know it's hard to hold down all those parts by yourself!!!) Actually, if you watched closely, Sheila snuck on stage and played even more keys during Mutiny..... she later told me it was so funky she couldn't control herself! I dont blame her! But most of us did't know she played keys! Actually, during one song Eric played keys a little too when he wasn't blowing (I think it was Screams of Passion). In the post from Paul's manager above, I think he mentions that some of Sheila's peeps will be rounding at the backing band. You know during the famous one night only Family concert back in 1985, Wendy and Susannah's brother Jonathan (RIP), and another guy whom I can't remember played keys (in addiiton to Paul playing a little too on a couple songs)....not sure who played guitar back then (possibly Miko). Jellybean will most surely play drums.... I think Paul's favorite instrument is bass, although he plays guitar and keys too. In his solo DVD which you can buy from his website, he actually plays bass and sings the whole time.... even during Jungle Love!!! Very impressive! [Edited 2/7/07 11:48am] |

im fully aware that prince did not create, manage or propel the bangels. he just gave them their first hit. Thanks, SOS. Just in case we didn't get enough Hoffs/Melvoin confusion in the mid-80s . . . I know! I just had to look back through all the pages of this thread to see what confused soul was talking about Susanna Hoffs! Rock n roll baby |
