While she may be opening up, somethin ain't right. I seem to remember some songs suggesting little Miss Mayte cheating, etc. Of course, she ain't gon put all her business in the streets, but this sounds a little too fairy tale-ish to me.

As for not being allowed to call her husband...YIKES. Talk about keepin yo pimp hand strong!

Prince should become a teacher. The class...PIMPOLOGY 101.

The artist formerly known as Prince's wife
By JUDITH WOODS
Last updated at 19:57pm on 16th December 2006

Mayte Garcia, who first met Prince at the tender age of 17.

‘For a while after my marriage ended I wondered about changing my name, because I didn’t want to be forever known as Prince’s ex-wife, but I decided not to,’ she says. ‘I think I’m finally starting to be recognised as someone who’s creative in my own right, which is wonderful.

Anyone else find it slightly ironic that she says she didn't want to be know as Prince's ex-wife and yet the majority of this article is her talking about her time as Prince's wife? Maybe her 15 minutes were almost up (again).

Great interview. Thanks for posting it. I would've been too lazy to find it myself. So your graciousness is deeply appreciated. BTW, what were her parents thinking. Backstage passes or not, I wouldn't take my minor aged daughter to meet Prince. Just doesn't look right....

I wonder why she waited so long before revealing those details. Although I'm not surprised. Prince is also known for the number of women he was with. Doesn't that say anything? How self centered is that?

Leaving a mother on her own mourning the death of a child. Instead of giving a shoulder to lean on, a warm chest to cry on, repeating all over again how much you're loved is what you need in those times, how could he possibly put himself to work amd try to heal, leaving her with her emotions alone? That really hit me.

So many people keep berating Prince for not "being there" for Mayte when they lost their child. Have any of you stopped to think that maybe he wasn't "there" for himself, so how could he be "there" for her?

We all respond to tragedy in different ways. Prince has always been a workaholic, so it appears that that was his way of coping with such an immense tragedy. Statistics have proven over and over again that tragedy either pulls couples closer together or pushes them apart. Unfortunately for Prince and Mayte they were not able to overcome this tragedy together.

I just think that it is unfair to criticize the man for the way he responded when the vast majority of people on this board have NEVER been in that situation. Remember - they BOTH lost a child.

I totally agree with the fact that work was his way of coping with such an immense tragedy because this is how I cope with it myself. Now, how do you know if people responding on this board have NEVER been in that situation. HOW DO YOU KNOW???

Why the need for the caps? I am not here to argue with anyone. Please reread my post.

I said the vast majority, not all. When considering the law of averages, my initial statement is correct. I stated it that way, because I cannot say with absolute certainty, it would be foolish to make that assertion. Typically there are no absolutes in the world - as in there is no absolutely correct way for someone to respond to a tragedy. However, I can say with absolute certainty that no one on this board has lived Prince's life, so in that sense I do know that no one on this board has been in his specific situation.

same here! I don't know how they did it. I would kill him dead (in Sophia of Color Purple's voice) if he looked at my daughter. Prince or no Prince. After all he has a track record. shrug one thing to desire Prince for yourself... another thing when it comes down to your minor daughter. Personally, I want a "poindexter" for my daughter when she grows up. a steady freddy.

Yeah,
Prince doesn't strike me as someone who is very in tuned with grieving process. It seems he hides from grief instead of dealing with it head on. Like you said, many people deal with grief in different ways. some people deal with it in a more expedient and healthier way than others.
Too sad for Prince and Mayte. And my heart broke for both of them. Mayte being so young to have endured a tragedy and not have her husband (the only one who's lost matches that of her own) to lean on for support, and Prince who was notoriously private having to experince such a great tragedy in the public forum; and all the silly spectulation that surrounded them during that time. disbelief
Glad they both were able to move on. Too bad they weren't able to move on together.

I can see this happening when a young naive woman marries an older, wealthy, successful, experienced man. No doubt he controlled the finances in the household also.
The whole thing sounds painfully abusive to me, too, and I'm glad to see Mayte has a positive outlook on it. If it were me, I'd have my foot so far up his ass.....Don't call? I'd beat him with his own cell phone. I'd get arrested for husband abuse. He'd be HIDING from me! He'd be touring in The North Pole to get away...
He should be advised to never marry an older woman. Stick with the young pliable ones

As a bellydancer in his band, on stage their chemistry was electrifying. Off stage, his svengali influence extended to dictating the clothes she dressed in and how she wore her hair.

And while he actively encouraged her creative input into his work, she was never permitted to contact him, to be late, to be anything other than enthusiastic about the gruelling work schedule that encroached into every area of their life, including their honeymoon.

I wish the interviewer had let her talk about this part, if it's true. Though she was his wife, she was still a member of his band, and lateness and griping about work aren't things a bandleader wants in his group. The part aboutnot being permitted to contact him sounds weird. There had to be more to it. Maybe she couldn't contact him while he was in the studio or rehearsing or writing.

Jesus, no wonder that Theocratic Order that the JWs believe in must've appealed to Prince. Sounds like he treats his relationships more like owner and pet than two equal partners.

Although I first disagreed with BellaNoche about him not being there to help Mayte during the tragedy, I still think it takes two to tangle, and we'd need to hear his side of the story to be able to judge. We will probably never know as Prince doesn't like to talk about his private life However, when you gather bits of information from different people who had any kinda of relationship with him, you can have an idea of his personnality. He's very controlling and selfish in my opinion no matter how talented and successful he became, he's just like us, not perfect.

easily, the motherf*cker is f*cked up in the head. there are many many many other celebrities out there that don't do this sh*t to their women. prince is f*cked up. he lives in a loony world. his actions are considered disgusting when a real pimp does it (manipulates and controls a woman) and he should not receive a "get out of jail card for free" simply because he is prince. this sh*t is f*ckin' wrong. period.
