Serious question: why is the org dead

This can't be post 2016. I stopped checking in regularly around 2012.
Are there metrics for subscribers and traffic?

I noticed a drop in posts around 2011 or so, and it's either gotten worse or at least hasn't improved. I as much as I'd like to blame some of the mods, many of whom I loathe, I don't think that explains the drop. It also can't be prince. Even my GD friends now on Facebook dig him still or even more since he passed.

I expected a serious spike after his passing because there is no "official" site folks can go to. Where is everybody?

I've been casually stalking the site for the first time in a long while over the past couple of days. There's so few people I recognise on here now though that I don't think I can really get as involved as I once did.

Maybe one day smile
JaneyPoos used to be it... then they changed what it was. Now what I am isn't it and what is it is strange and frightening to me...

The Org has been itself throughout all the turmoil, Orgers come and go ... and even slightly increased traffic here just after Prince passed.

However, our FB page went from roughly 3,400 members to 26,000 or so in three days when he passed. Now, it's a little over 20,000, and this site consistently has traffic - just not as much as back in 2001 - 2007, (when this place was my world!).

The problems with the avatars and photos have been noted, and it's all on ben, and when he gets time to do something.

But, The Org will never die ... there's been safeguards installed to keep it alive long after we are gone .... 😲

the place has had the life moderated out of it... it became so damn vanilla... so just about everyone with a little fire/personality left

moderators should only be allowed to do the job for a certain period of time... say 2 or 3 years... and then hand over to someone else... the place has become a reflection of a few people's personalities... and while they might be "nice" people... it's not healthy for the site as a whole

hmm folks been leaving the site for ages now, though. not because of mods per se, but the way i see it and the reason why i left is because it became pretty meh around here. seeing stupid posts/threads like "is prince gay?" instead of having sensible conversation about the music gets real aggravating, real fast. people come and go for various reasons. now that prince is dead, i don't think the site's finna come back to how it was 15+ years ago.

as for moderators, it's a volunteer thing. and as a former mod who was in the shit for about a year and a half, i wouldn't wish 3 years of modding this place on anybody. lol you gotta have a certain fortitude to be an org mod. i dunno how things are now, but i'm figuring that ben ain't been around here in a long time as it is--can folks still ask him if they can be a mod? dunno how shit's changed...

Correct because now the ones who are obsessed with Prince's death and who gets his $$ hijack every other thread with their theories no matter what the thread was originally about.

It doesn't help that the site is built around old school technology. We are living in a world where the words "responsive" and "mobile" accompany any new website that is built today. I think it was a couple of months ago that for the first time in history the internet was accessed more through a mobile operating system like Android than desktop/laptop systems with Windows or OSX.

The Org on a phone is painful and for someone who does 75% plus browsing on their phone, it can only be a hinderance and a site worth forgetting about.

Combine that with the responsiveness and mobility of Facebook then there is no contest. No wonder the Org is losing out to Mr Zuckerberg.

Personally I hate Facebook and am old school enough to still depend on my laptop more than my phone. But I can see why many people would abandon this platform for alternatives that work better in 2017.

The org is in an extremely strong position to be the go-to Prince resource and community. There is nothing else with the history and branding that the org has outside of Facebook. And with a larger and more varied user base, the better and more interesting the discussions would be on the org making some of the OP's points somewhat mute. But it will never be a fraction of what it used to be without a serious facelift, designed from the ground up. Even integration with Tapatalk would be a step in the right direction.

In its current guise only the last remaining laptop/desktop huggers will stick with it as the rest of society moves on with FB, mobile apps, AI and AR driven apps all with 5.5 inch screens. The conversations will become more and more mundane and prone to trolling and the moderation will go into overdrive.
