Prince.org...it's not about Prince anymore

Prince.org has turned into a tenny-bopper site, in every sense of the phrawse. Any serious discussion where someone who can't handle maybe not viewing or reading the thread, finds the subject matter too intense, or offensive, can complain to a moderator and, based on nothing more than (seemingly) a whim or a thought that, yeah, I don't agree with the premise of this thread, so as a mod, I'm going to lock this down. This is crazy. I remember when a huge part of the site was back when the AOL chats or other Prince/PP moderated chats were going strong, and the fact that Prince or someone at PP would censor the conversation, was a big issue here. But now, we have the exact same thing; a few people dictating what can or cannot be discussed based on nothing more than their own sensibilities.

With Prince gone, I was hoping this would turn into a site where people could discuss things without wondering if the thread their interested in will still be there when the next thought arises. Boy was I wrong. If anything this site has turned into a bastion of stupidity, where the major threads are about Prince's guitar face, or his junk, or whatever. Despicable, and I think even he would wince at the lack of depth of any discussion on this site. The funny thing is that the most serious and enlightening discussions I've had have been on sites where I didn't even know they were into Prince. But, based on the discussions, they have more respoect for Prince as a person and as a musician than I've ever seen here. That's especially evident now.

I wish alt.music.prince was still around so mature, intelligent people could discuss what they wanted to. But, it is what it is, and all good things come to an end. It's come to an end here, but many of you just haven't noticed yet.

Peace out

As a long-time member of the Org, I've learned that you have to sift through a LOT of coal to find the diamonds scattered throughout the forums. For all the fluffy "Post your fave pics!" or "What P song do you dream about" or "Make your perfect single disc Emancipation" posts, every once and a while there will be an isolated question or comment that actually has some meat to it, and invites a deeper exploration.

.

One thing I've noticed over the years here - which has really become an issue since Prince's death - is that there are quite a few people/fanatics who believe P was infallible, that his every stitch of clothing was genius, that every song was worthy of praise, that he was perfect in every way. And those people are the ones who immediately call for locking threads that discuss his dickish behavior towards band members, his bad business decisions, and especially the facts behind his unfortunate drug overdose. Prince wasn't perfect, he was just a really talented human being who was riddled with quirks and flaws, like most of us. With his death, we've had to face some unpleasant truths, truths that don't evaporate into the purple ether just because someone can't handle the fact that P screwed up.

.

I've flirted with the idea of leaving the Org at various times over the years, because the majority of the postings were very teeny-bopper, as the OP said. But I decided to revisit from time to time, mainly hoping for news of new releases or boots or whatever. At the end of the day, this is one of the oldest and liveliest online fan communities out there. I've learned and acquired a lot by being on this site, and I'm glad to have been around since the early days.

Do you mind explaining what "facts" there are behind P's drug overdose? I'm not sure how threads with endless speculation about how he died or why he was using painkillers could be considered deep discussion. I can't imagine P would want that either.

If people want more deep discussion then gets some threads going to hopefully drown out the silly stuff.

Like GiggityGoo said, it's always been a game of ignoring silly threads and searching for interesting and enlightening discussion.

What I find distasteful is a drastic increase in trolling.

I should probably just take a few weeks off from checking the org, but habits die hard.

This is all makes sense. It is a part of Christianity to see someone as all bad or all good. Geniuses never fall in the "all good" category yet they do amazing things that change the life of so many. No inventor has only useful inventions. I think it is strange that people still can't accept that brilliant people aren't always fun to be around, don't always have the best social skills and are just as hypocritical as the rest of us. For some it is impossible to truly appretiate another unless we can prove that he was infallible. Given the choice to toss him asside because he is human, or ignore the countless proofs of his humanity, they chose to keep him and make hima a saint. They choose to simply call everyone who says what they can't axxept is also true, haters.

There came a time when the risk of remaining tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin.
