But then they went to the outside shot... and things turned purple... and then the symbol... and I was like, "siiiigh." That hit me really hard because it's Minneapolis. I feel like a lot of people are overlooking the fact that JT didn't just snap his fingers and make that happen. That took the coordinated effort of A LOT of people. More than that, it took the coordinated effort of a lot of Minneapolis people.

.

Yeah, uhm... That was CGI.

Prince's half time show just took it to a whole new level and 11 years later it still hasn't been topped and I believe it never will.

As for JT's tribute... I find him such a poor artist, specially in this kind of context, where you are either brilliant or it completely fails the purpose. There's no artistry, I think. I don't even like his dancing, but I guess it all comes down to personal taste.

I feel the same way. Sadly, even though I didn't initially want them to include Prince videos in the show, the fleeting moments during which Prince appeared were pure perfection... Prince was so great that any Prince tribute will always be a very hard challenge for anyone.

The hologram aside, i dont like it, how would any artist do the superbowl in minneapolis and NOT make a reference to Prince, during that peeformance?

Will there also be a reference to Bob Dylan?

With the exception of all the purple, that was the worst Super Bowl performance in recent memory. That thrown together "tribute" was wacked but I'm sure that's because Justin had something else planned but oh well. And out of all the song selections available, using "I Would Die For You" was tacky as fuck and just another of his lil' bitch type moves.

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Next thing we will have other doing the same. I feel this marks a true end of an era. Prince will now be a caricature of the curly haired 20 something forever, his music used to prop other artists and sell products like baby diapers, toothpaste, fast food restaurants and maybe even beer etc.

Prince publicly spoke about some things but he is not on earth anymore so it does not matter.

People will pay tribute as they see it and forget about the man they are paying honor.

.

I am not talking about the purple at the end - it was wonderful his town did that- I am talking the use of his music used to prop another musician - I get it. It is just sad that this is what will be for Prince for now on when this is the very thing he said he was not fond of-just sorry for Prince for the disregard of who he was as artist and a man.

Prince wasn't fond of a lot of things, but Prince wasn't ALWAYS right. The passing of songs from one person to another, one generation to another, one CULTURE to another, is as old as music itself. Passing music on to new people is what keeps music alive. That's why we're still listening to music that was written 1000 years ago.

As far as this goes... "and sell products like baby diapers, toothpaste, fast food restaurants and maybe even beer etc."... not unless the people managing his estate choose to sell his music for that purpose. And if that happens you should be mad at the people managing his estate and no one else.

[Edited 2/4/18 22:21pm]

I totally agree about passing music down and people singing and playing it. I just think we will see images of Prince doing duets with people from here on in- that is all. I do not want to see Prince do duets or his voice alongside. When Natalie Cole did it with her Dad Nat King Cole it was cool. However I am not ready for Prince duets. Just me. I know I am not in majority. I get the feeling any artist with the backing of deep pocketed corporation will do Prince duets now . I think Prince's music and genius will be remembered without the technology bringing him back from the dead. I love the big band era and Jazz from way back when but I do not need to see Thelonius Monk in a hologram or image on a screen. I learned a love of the music by hearing - just saying- it can be done respectfully movie soundtracks and just covering the music etc. Music travels decades no tech needed, no cheesy stuff.

.

I am not trying to be negative Nellie here but JT also took a swipe at Janet. That is a whole topic on its own. If the artist had not been JT who openly mocked Prince too, it added to my not feeling it. The performance is over and I am happy for all who enjoyed it and have something to cherish. I am happy for the great emotions it evoked and many fans shared.

Yeah I thought it was pretty mediocre. And not because it didn’t make some grand political statement or do something outrageous. I didn’t think the sound or choreography was that great. And if JT can really play instruments I wish we would have seen more of that than him dad dancing on stage.

I don't think JT intended to disrespect Prince, I really don't. I wasn't sure if I should watch it, or if I'd like it. But I was surprised and really touched by what he did for Prince and Minneapolis. "Minneapolis, this is for you." Come on, that was nice wasn't it?

However, to all those who think they can talk for Prince: We don't know what he really thought about JT, because he never talked about him again after that little dispute. We also don't know what JT really thinks about Prince and according to Sheila E, he talked good about him.

I had mixed feelings too and in another post I was raging against JT and now I think that was too much and dumb.

And wow, I also read somethin' from a guy who got a little racist, degrading this whole thing as a thing only white audiences would like.........Somethin' like that and that was kind of disrespectful to say. Arrogant too. Some people should really jump off their high horse.

Oh and I wanna add: Funny that no one really bashed Bruno Mars dressing up as Prince during his tribute at the Grammys. How was that okay? He literally copied Prince from head to toe, but he gets credit and love from the people. JT didn't really copy Prince. Why are there doublestandards? I find Bruno's "tribute" more disrespectful and cringe worthy.

He got it from me. I said that night it was like bad karaoke. But for some reason Bruno Mars is untouchable so it was sacrilege to say anything negative about the performance.

Comes with the territory. Anyone doing a halftime show knows the scrutiny they’re in for. I do think it’s unfair with some of the reviews knocking JT for not being political or still harping on about what happened with Janet in 2004. One, it’s the Super Bowl. People don’t want to be bombarded with political messages. Two, judge the performance on its own merits. Whether you feel Janet got a raw deal or not has nothing to do with this performance.

I expected the tribute to be a bit longer...it was more like a mention.I think the projected image of Prince was nicely done but I would have preferred if Justin had not sung along.I'm not sure Prince would have approved of that.I also loved the way the city went purple and the symbol effect.I thought that was beautiful.I didn't really care for Justin's performance overall but his dancing was still on point.I lost interest in JT after Future Sex/LoveSounds so I wasn't that familiar with the music.

JT didn't use Prince's image and voice during a program that is watched by hundreds of millions of people around the world without permission. Something people should probably be considering before they pass judgement.

It was tacky, as usual with someone like JT, but, more importantly, who gave him Prince's isolated vocals to do this? Seems the Estate is doing anything for a buck except doing what make them the most money: poll his fans or even consult with his fans to gauge interest... Just wait for a Jay-Z or Will.I.Am remix of old Prince songs or added garbage to outtakes...

JT talked about it last night on the Tonight Show, they were given not only the vocal stems but also the unedited footage of his performance of the song in Purple Rain.
