Race to Paisley Park 5K has been cancelled

Not sure what happened here. If it was an issue of not having proper approval from the estate I wonder why it took them so long make the organizers cancel? This was announced quite a while ago. I think it was nearly full and the money was going to local charity.

Well, that's too bad. Sounds like they didn't get proper approval - or couldn't come to terms. Who knows? Maybe the estate wanted a "cut."

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Too bad. I'm sure most of the people who signed up were local residents. They even had local radio and TV personalities signed up to be there. They updated their Facebook page. I wonder exactly what was misunderstood? IMO doesn't make the estate look good that they couldn't come to an agreement, especially since the money was going to charity (and I think a charity Prince would have supported).

https://www.facebook.com/...isleypark/
Please do not be upset with the Estate. We were the ones that misunderstood. Until today we thought all was permissable and right. Our intentions were to give back to the Chanhassen Music Dept and honor a man who was one of the most generous people ever. But we were mistaken. Please use your energy to do something positive for someone else! Let's continue to honor Prince in whatever way we can and carry on his legacy!!
Your money will be refunded for swag, virtual race, and actual 5k. Please be patient with us as this will take some time.

EDIT: apparently the organizers (and their lawyers) thought they had the rights to use his name, signs etc. but they did not. Still wish they could have come to an agreement with the estate. Over 300 people had signed up to run.

This is horrible news. I'm sure there is a backstory, but I thought this had the potential to become a wonderful annual event. sigh

.
You can't be selling unauthorized "swag" or holding an event without license.
This is a sad outcome.
I think there is confusion about who is in charge.

I was surprised it got as far as it did before this happened.
Whoever is in charge should allow this as a one-time event.

It leaves a really bad taste in my mouth. I don't know the organizers. It's possible they didn't do proper due diligence on the legal side but this event was announced in January. Why did it take the Estate this long to say no? After over 300 people had signed up? Why not work with the organizers to make it into a real event that could happen each year. I can't imagine Prince objecting to money raised going to the local high school music department. confused

I saw this coming.
I'm surprised they didn't.
.

Apparently they thought they had the rights. I have a hard time believing people would go through all that work especially offering merchandise if they didn't think they were in the clear to do so.

However we thought we had the rights to use his name etc per our lawyers and another contact we thought was the correct contact. We found out today we were wrong.

Again I think it's a shame the Estate couldn't have worked something out. As far as I know all the money was going to charity.

--I agree and since it is for a charity why don't they just give the rights? It can not be that complicated and it will not cost the estate any money. It is starting to look like the estate managers do not give s shit about charity even when their is no lost to the estate.

They claim on their FB page it was their decision to cancel. But they must have gotten some vibe from the estate that it wasn't ok. I think that's really shitty. From the outset they made clear the proceeds were going to charity. They even had a local radio DJ and TV anchor lined up to MC the event. And over 300 people had entered. Now they have to refund all that money plus anything people spent on merchandise. sad

We are sorry all of this happened. We truly thought we were doing the right thing and had covered all our bases. We were honored to put on a healthy event and raise money for the community that Prince lived in and loved. Please know this. And please do not feel anger towards Paisley Park or the Estate - they are just protecting themselves and doing what they feel is right too. We respect them!!

They thought they had dotted all the i's and crossed all the t's, and the money was going to charity. We don't even know for sure why they had to cancel. A name change might not have been enough. Anyway I'm guessing the Estate knew the proceeds were going to charity so why not work with the organizers to make it a real event, perhaps one that could happen annually. It's promoting health which is a good thing and the proceeds would benefit the local community (also a good thing). How much of the Celebration proceeds are Tyka and Omarr giving to charity?

They said they didn't feel there was enough time to do that and weren't sure if everyone who signed up would still be interested.

I'd love to know what exactly the estate is protecting themselves from. It was a 5K race with proceeds going to the local high school. What's so bad about that?

--Well the last thing I saw in the court papers was that had not seen any accounting of the money from the concert but I did see some paper work last week concerning a settlement pertaining to the concert so maybe once the estate settled . I know they had another event with Sheila E that did donate money to some music programs in the city.

So the organizers mentioned cease and desist in a tweet this morning. It had to have come from the estate. The question for me is were Tyka and Omarr involved at all or was this just lawyers and they have no say? confused

One more time the sibs are not controlling the estate at this time. Decisions are being made by Coamerica bank. The only thing I can think is the bank wants payment for use of Prince's image which is bizarre for a charity event. Remember Prince waived fees for use of his music for the Joffery Ballet.

So fees can be waived for special circumstances. This type of thing is bad for the image of the estate.

So the mayor of Chanhassen tweeted that he's still going to run and is asking residents to DM him if they're interested in joining him.

Well, this F'n sucks. Im still going for the celebration, but wanted to run this 5k. Finishing at PP wouldve been a tremendous experience.

How in the entire hell do you set something like this up without full approval???

(Insert something clever here)

Thanks for the update rogifan. I hope you don't mind that I shared your update on some other sites. Hope there will be a good turn out. Although I will be dog tired from the family dance party the night (morning) of the race, I plan on going. Only there for a few days and want to make the most of it.
