ALL THAT WE LEAVE BEHIND

As I lean over your grave

The sleet pours grit

Into my freezing face

Dazed and confused

I stand wondering

About what came before

And all that passed...

Will you be all right

Where you are now

Are conditions better

Some way, some how?

As I turn away

Shivering in the cold

I realize it's true

Before we grow old

All that we leave behind

Are footprints in the snow

Hoping our young

Won't misconstrue

The path set before them

And fall into the cracks

Of all that we leave behind
