Okay, I played it for the first time yesterday at work. (I run a computer lab/afterschool/teen center). When it finished playing I was trying to decide how I felt about it but was interrupted by about seven kids (ages 12-16) behind me yelling, "play it again! play it again!" Unbeknownst to me, they had been giggin' their asses off!

They begged me to play it six or seven more times, as they broke down an old school/dumb dancin' dance contest! I was falling off my chair - they were hysterical! Girls doing the Roger Rabbit (I didn't know kids these days even knew it existed) and boys actually droppin it, all in fun. Every time it ended, they yelled, "one more time! one more time!"

So, the youth like it.

I really dig this track.

The vocals R slammin'. He hasn't used those voices, in that way, in ages... and man does it work here. Pure Prince.

Strong chorus. Strong hook.

It really doesn't need 2 much.

A) Lower the pitch of the bell.

B) Add a Linn handclap every 8 beats.

C) Add a serious Funk Bass line... Thumb and pop... Minneapolis style.

D) Add Funk Guitar with Hohner (of course).

E) Add some piano.

F) Add Blues guitar solo... clean or dirty.

G) Minimal horns optional, but must be real... I hear swells followed by one or 2 staccato hits.

BAM. There it is.

It's in a big apartment complex on Memorial Drive. It's a computer center for the residents - I teach basic computer skills to adults in the morning, and in the afternoon most of the kids who live here come in and do homework/play on the computer/hang out/flirt/ask me for rides/etc.

ooh, i've just heard the track at last. i don't know if anyone else has mentioned this - but it is a lot like 'my name is prince' in terms of structure, attitude and lyric.

but FAR less busy of course. anyway, i'm liking it, but it's suffering a bit from 'black sweat' syndrome - it just doesn't QUITE have that killer hook. if he tidies this up a bit and adds an addictive little hook, i'll be a happy boy.

Maybe splitting the difference with a Kool & The Gang vibe might be even better.

I'd add either some Jimmy Nolen style Funked-up rhythm guitar or some sparse crunchy Rock tones.


Those particular instruments would maintain the raw organic feel of the tune.

Oh, and it's more likely to be 'chemical peal' - a cosmetic treatment to reduce wrinkles, so a reference to looks. I think that fits in with the rest of the song, which to me is mostly about substance over artificiality. The person thinks the game (music industry?) is all about 'looks', but Prince has genuine 'tricks' (abilities) they can drink from his wine (metaphor for sharing his abilities) his guitar has the ability to bring forth water and quench your thirst (ie real ability to satisfy your needs unlike, say, music that is hollow and doesn't satisfy your needs).

Starting off with 'better' implies things are not so good at the moment - say, all the artificial music around not satisfying your soul. So listening to Prince's music is a step towards feeling better, then good, then wonderful.

Well, that's my take on it so far!
