Meshell’s Prince Tribute concerts following his death were amazing. Real artistic interpretations vs. the nostalgia covers that the industry was putting out. She digs deep.

Would be cool if she played "Emale" since she and Prince recorded an instrumental version of it. I wonder if that is in the vault.

maaaaan...if i had the money to fly out and get a hotel i would NOT miss this!! Like someone posted above, Meshell likes to dig deep and come at things from unique unexpected (but always SATYSFYING) ways....makes it a thrill for those who like musical sonic suprises (count me in that camp smile. some of my favorite concerts ever by anyone have been Meshell gigs when her 'official' shows often had that energy of unpredictable 'aftershows'.

anyone who goes to this please post back with the set list....

.

Paisley Park is launching an occasional live series, Musicology 2020, based on Prince’s mantra of “real music by real musicians.” Meshell Ndegeocello will kick it off with a show being billed as “Reimagining Prince.” She interpreted his “Sometimes It Snows in April” on her 2018 covers collection, “Ventriloquism,” but recent set lists indicate that the bass-playing blender of soul, hip-hop, jazz, rock and politics has been revisiting her 1990s material.

groovy, thanks. Been thinking about this show all week, wishing i had the $$ to fly out & grab a hotel for it, but between the $$, and work/family responsabilities here, unfortunately could not make it happen. Meshell's been my favorite musical creator since she arrived on the scene in 93, and before that Prince held that throne during his prime...so seeing (or i should say HEARING) HER do HIM in THE PARK...man...that woulda been a dream for me....

I will NEVER go to a Me'Shell show in my life ever again! I should have listened to my own intuition when the announcement was made. But, I didn't wanna come off as not giving an artist a fair chance. Many of my musician friends swore that she is amazing and that her show would be one that I would love. Please note that I work Monday - Fridays from 2pm-10pm. I work on Saturdays from 7am-3pm. That being said, I was runnin on just 4 hours of sleep, 8 hours on my feet and back home to shower, change and attend show. I was expecting from the promo vids that Paisley Park had done that she would do stuff from the Musicology album. I only heard 2 90s songs. Starfish and Coffee and Love 2 The 9s. The only 2 songs that I could half way decently appreciate her versions of were Starfish and Coffee and I Wanna Be Your Lover. I don't know who or what was doing the percussions but they were so off that I could not even apprecate songs like Let's Pretend We're Married. She is way to mellow to be considered funky. I hated that she stuck to 70s and 80s Prince. The video clips in on the big screen didn't even match the era of songs she was playing. For example during Sexy Dancer, there was 90s Prince clip of Pussy Control on the screen. One song she had movie clips of The Time from Purple Rain doing Jungle Love/The Bird and yet her band was not even doing any of their music! The DJ had tracks that skipped in random places. I had to get up several times to go outside the soundstage and talk to fellow staff just to stay awake! The show was supposed to have been from 8pm-11pm. 15 minutes into it I wanted to go home. But I knew that I needed to sit and wait for something actually good to be done. I have never been so glad to see a show end in my life!

.

While Ndegeocello has long been an unabashed fan of Prince’s music – “He is definitely the reason why I play music,” she told Jezebel in 2018 – her personal relationship with the Purple One was difficult. She told Jezebel they met several times but never really hit it off: “He’s one of the reasons I’m like, ‘Don’t ever meet your heroes.’ ”

.

In 2014, when Prince released two new albums via his longtime foe Warner Bros., Ndegeocello tweeted “in 2002 Prince called me a ‘house n—-‘ for making a record for Warner Bros. Past is prelude ain’t it.” She later explained to Fact Magazine that the incident happened when she called to ask him to record a guitar solo for one of her songs.

.

“He’s not a nice person,” she said. “But I just have to accept that. It’s just something between he and I that I try to rise above. Maybe one day we will have a good experience, I don’t know. Everyone’s not meant to be friends. But I have no doubt in my mind that the reason I play music is because of him. And I really appreciate all his works.”

.

Indeed, Ndegeocello has frequently covered Prince live, recorded a version of “Sometimes it Snows in April” on her most recent album “Ventriloquism” and is currently on the road playing an entire set of his music. “I had to make something of him, for him,” she told Rolling Stone. “I’ve made so much because of him. I still can’t believe he’s not on the planet and this was as close to closure as I’d get.”

Kinda astonishing how some peopel fail to grasp the simplest concepts. Did you really think PP were gonna get a bunch of artists to do concerts in which they'd cover songs from that album? Seriously?

Thats kind of a fun concept, BVH. PP should consider a cover performance series where popular and/or local artists cover his albums sequentially, including things like NEWS and Graffiti Bridge. They could invite in session players and people involved in said albums to participate.

I don't know what your expectations were but i've heard the show & think it's great. Me'shells interpretations were highly original and exactly what any artist should do if your going to cover Prince. I'd much prefer this set over any note for note tribute that's come before it. Maybe you were too fatigued to enjoy it but I think Me'shell was amazing. Nice to see/hear a real musician do justice & honor p's creativity, he definatley would of dug it.

I had a great time! The vocalists were great. The only quarm I had was the drum interludes went on a little too long with the sampler. Otherwise those versions of Love 2 The 9's, Tambourine, I Wanna Be Your Lover and Purple Rain were very nice to hear. Re-worked...almost didnt recognize what they were at first.

Album plays and love for vinyl records.

''Starfish and Coffee'' is from 1987.

-

And I think you approached it wrong somehow, imho.

From what I read, it sounded super wonderful :

"In front of random videos of Prince in concert shown on a giant screen, she and her band favored spare instrumentation, mechanical rhythms, a jazzy vibe, plenty of space in arrangements, a bit of droning, some down-tempo grooves, and a taste of funk."

-

I for one, don't want people to 'cover' a song by Prince as a 'copy' of that particular song.

I prefer interpretations. Only The Revolution is 'allowed' imho (again) to pley the music the way Prince wanted, instructed and created, live.

Seen them Live twice already and they are stunning! Certainly for those older fans like me, who are familiar with the earlier days.
