EXCLUSIVE: Beyonce, Jay Z and Nicki Minaj Highlight New Tidal Charity Concert

6:00 AM PDT, September 30, 2015

Jay Z's Tidal is ready to make a splash in the live music space.

The streaming service is gearing up for its first-ever concert event, dubbed TIDAL X: 1020, with an all-star lineup of more than 20 artists includingBeyonce, Jay Z, Nicki Minaj, Usher, Prince, Lil Wayne, T.I., Damien Marley, Thomas Rhett and more. The event is set for Oct. 20 at the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Tickets will be available at the $40 and $60 level, going on sale for Tidal members on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 12 p.m. ET, and for the general public on Friday, Oct. 2 at 12 p.m. ET. Fans are encouraged to donate above each ticket's face value, as all funds collected from ticket sales will be administered by New World Foundation on behalf of Tidal.

According to the organization's website, New World Foundation builds partnerships with philanthropic allies who "value the essential truth that the people who suffer injustice are crucial to overcoming it."

A press release for the event echoes that all proceeds will "benefit nonprofit organizations dedicated to advancing positive community relations and effecting systemic change for the development and sustainability of just societies, this inaugural event's philanthropic focus."

Fans who can't make it to the show in Brooklyn will be able to watch the whole thing streaming live on Tidal, for both members and non-members of the service, free of charge -- though viewers can make donations while watching the livestream.

Jay Z

Rap mogul Jay Z, one of the superstar investors in the artist-owned app, announced plans to stage a major party in his native Brooklyn on Tuesday (29Sep15), and a day later (30Sep15), the details for the big bash have been unveiled.

The musicians will be joined by Lil Wayne, Nick Jonas, Fabolous, Damien Marley, T.I., Big Sean and country singer Thomas Rhett, among many others, while comedian Jimmy Kimmel is also slated to make an appearance.

The TIDAL X: 1020 show will take place at the Barclay's Center on 20 October (15) and will stream live online.

The gig is aimed at "raising awareness, funds, conscious engagement & dynamic action for transformative & positive social impact", according to a post on the streaming site's official Twitter page. It will also serve as the "first in a series of philanthropic music events curated by Tidal".

Jay Z launched the streaming service in March (15) with co-owners includingBeyonce, Usher, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Madonna, Kanye West and Daft Punk, but the stars faced a backlash from critics over the company's subscription fees, amid concerns the lack of a free service, which is provided by rival Spotify, could drive music-lovers back to illegal downloads.

Prince got paid, which is always a victory unto itself, especially in our current era where music artists get nothing for a cd. That by itself is very successful. Add to that, Tidal is widely rumoured to offer equity in the company for artists that use the service exclusively. Tidal is still very small, but take a look at Spotify's 15 million users paying $10/monthly and you see the potential for TIDAL as it grows to be a big windfall for artists, such as Prince if they have equity in the service. I don't know what Prince is getting exactly from Tidal, but it has to have the potential to be enormous for him to participate to the level he has. I need Revolution era material to get excited, but it may be coming given the amount of money that's possible.

Saying "Prince merged with Tidal" is overstating it, don't you think? They're working together and his music is available on their site, but that's not a "merger" any more than me posting here is me merging with prince.org.

lol I don't care about Tidal and won't be joining. But, I will be tuning in to the concert just to hear Prince, since non-members can catch the live stream. The others I don't give two cents for.

That's what U think! prince would NEVER give 90% of his catalog, new albums, weekly new cuts freah out the studio, plus 2 free concerts 2 Tidal without a stake in it. Why do U think he is so happy?

This is a GREAT question. I've asked it and pushed it often in settings where there are people who support multiple causes none of which benefit the poor or in need in their own country. I hope Jay Z and company have the right people around them to make sure this issue is given proper attention.

I have no idea what Jay Z & co. do, but Prince has privately supported many causes over the years.

.
So, by that logic, Prince would never have many of his albums for sale on iTunes, Amazon, and big box stores. Prince has merged with Apple, Amazon, Target, Wal Mart and Best Buy. He called the Today Show today; he has merged with NBC as well.
