First setlist seems a little more interesting with: Wow/The Unexpected (Liv vox), Funknroll, Rock and Roll Love Affair, Pretzelbodylogic, Dreamer, Something in the Water (Does Not Compute), and The Love We Make.

Love Me Tender is an interesting choice on both setlists.

The Elvis Presley tune? That IS interesting. When I saw him in 98, he did Teddy Bear.

You're not alone in your opinion. For a man who has touted "real music by real musicians" for years & obviously has the chops, this is lazy. For a man who has a more than ample catalog of songs, from the hits to the obscure, these standard setlists & the use of cover songs are inexplicable & frustrating. As a longtime fan, I'd like to see him cement his legacy, not coast on it.

funny thing is no one cares what uyou think..the fact that it takes soooo long to even get setlists tells you that although folks on here think they are the only fans they are not,,pleace insufferale at present

true that true that!! I still don't like show 2. Show one looks pretty interesting though with th new material. Thats closer to the show I was hoping for. With the 2 shows a night format I was really hoping he would go back to the UK type shows and rock it out. It looks like he kind of did on show 1.

Excellent show last night. I've seen Prince live many times over the past 30 years and I thoroughly enjoyed last night. He seemed very happy, in a great mood. Lots of conversation with the crowd and lots of smiles and typical Prince facial expressions. I LOVED that he performed The Love We Make! That was the highlight for me. Something in the Water was also excellent! He was awesome on guitar too. Thanks Prince!! See you again next time you're in Toronto!

what's insufferable is the fact that whenever people criticize prince or a show, you follow up with a criticism of another org member. You should be able to see the difference between the two. All this talk about 'negativity' on this board, talk that comes from the superfans, is bullshit. The most toxic shit i see on this site are the direct personal attacks that mostly come from superfans defending their hero prince.

yeah, but maybe he could charge those prices and play ONE show, and instead of doing two sample sets a night, he could replace one with some deep cuts to appease the hardcores.

Aww, have I offended your delicate sensibilities with my opinion? Guess what? That's yours & it doesn't matter any more than mine. And not to be a grammar nazi or anything, but you would come across significantly more intelligent than the imbecile you seem if you could manage proper punctuation, the use of uppercase letters & correct spelling, not to mention basic coherence. Nice try at making a point, though. Good job!

thats one good option.something needs to change.

no more two shows pr night, play full versions,no sampler set.

like,you know,a real show.

imagine James Brown doing sampler sets for 10 goddamn years.

In fairness, a handful of us in the crowd have seen Prince dozens of times and for those that have not the set lists are ideal. Also, how many artists have different set lists for each show? Prince can and does change it up a fair amount, but he only has so much wiggle room for the person that paid $200 for tickets and never saw Prince before. There are about 10 songs that he absolutely has to play for those folks. The only issue that I think is legit is when he gives too much spotlight to folks that take away from his shows. Estelle singing the first verse of Purple Rain in Baltimore was an example. Those liberties can be unforgiveable to both casual and hardcore fans. Taking the liberty to perform an obscure, new or unreleased song is a positive experience for both sets of fans.

What's very near insufferable -

1. die-hard "fans" who have gone to countless Prince concerts acting like they didn't know he is going to do a sampler set.

2. die-hard "fans" who have gone to countless Prince concerts acting like they don't know a significant majority of the songs are going to his most popular (unobscure) songs.

3. die-hard "fans" who make it a point to label Prince lazy or boring or money-grubbing or no-good because he performs a concert the way he wants to and not the way you want him to.

4. die-hard "fans" who keep going to Prince concerts and tracking his every move, yet talk about him as though he has been the biggest musical hack ever, especially over the last 20 years.

Did he do the slowed down version of Dreamer like at the Paisley Rally show or traditional version? This looks like a pretty good setlist!!

Thanks 4 posting this, but U missed that they played Plectrum Electrum somewhere around Dreamer or Guitar. I preferred the 1st show because I love 2 hear the new material, so the 1st 8 trax didn't disappoint. I wish that, since he has so many hits, he wouldn't perform any of them twice in one night. He could divide them up.

I hope he comes to Albuquerque. Why do people on this site always complain about a setlist if they weren't even at the show? I don't get it. Prince changes the arrangements so I always find it interesting to hear the different versions of popular songs. Prince-Come to Sandia Casino and Resort in Albuquerque. It's an awesome venue. U will like it.

Why did you put "fans" in quotes? Do you really think that anyone who posts here isn't a real fan? Are you thinking, "a REAL fan wouldn't complain so much"? Why do you care so much what other people think about prince? Does it upset you to read negative opinions of something you have positive opinions of? Would you feel better about your opinions if everyone were all on your team, the "real" prince fans?

.

Anyway, addressing your points:
1-2: I've seen a lot of fans complain about the sampler set and the hits shows, but I've never seen any fan act surprised that he does this. I don't understand your point.

3: Everyone agrees that Prince certainly does things the way he wants. It just looks like Prince wants to be lazy and moneygrubbing, so... The argument, "He's doing what he wants, don't criticize him" makes no sense. What if he wants to make more money at the expense of fans? That's fine?

4: I agree, a lot of people (myself included) should move on from Prince, 'cause he doesn't really do anything for us anymore.

There are numerous artists who can & do change their setlists on a nightly basis, some of whom that have been in the game longer than Prince, few of whom have a back catalog anywhere near as extensive to draw from. You are absolutely right. For many going to see him, Prince is a nostalgia act. He hasn’t released a hit song in many years & isn’t getting real radio play, so today’s fans know him because their funky uncle plays “When Doves Cry” at the family BBQ, or they hear TMGITW when shopping for groceries. Any savvy artist that respects his audience (yes, I know we’re dealing with Prince & I don’t know which of those two descriptive phrases is less applicable) should realize that he needs to play 10-12 songs to satisfy those people – the chart toppers that they’ll recognize pretty much right away. The sampler set is full of classic tracks, but they’re teases & it’s frustrating that they’re only short takes & not full band workouts. Personally (although I doubt I’m alone in this), I’d prefer a segment highlighting Prince as a performer: a piano medley, a 10 minute guitar solo, an acoustic set, a song made up on the spot using multiple instruments about whatever city he’s in(?) – anything beats the lifeless cheat of the sampler set. Then, he might progress to a mix of 8 of his signature jams for the longtime listeners, a couple couple ballads for the ladies, throw in a few deep cuts, a new or unreleased tune or two which, as you said would make things more special for everyone in attendance (think if he did a unique unreleased song at each show?), and his encores.

And I can appreciate his interest in wanting to showcase the younger “talent,” but I didn’t pay $250 to see them warble their way through Purple Rain when the man himself is 3 feet from a microphone. If he’s that confident in their ability, he should let them open for him.

I got to admit, i would be horrified to hear someone else singing purple rain in a prince concert. Or doing that famous solo. But also the first setlist is abit more like it! What i have been craving for, newer stuff first hour, hits the second. If he had thrown in a couple more aoa jams in there it would have been perfect.
