Jay Z could have paid for everyone then.

Sometimes, even when one has the means to do something that doesn't mean that that'll necessarily be the smart thing to do. There are plenty of other social issues that are just as important as Baltimore, a city he probably doesn't have much direct connection to. Why would one spend a huge amount of money in just one place? Lets be reasonable. You give what you can at the levels appropriate for the circumstance. Getting local residents that do have the direct connection, to invest in their city is a lot smarter strategy IMO, for a number of reasons that I could go into if you're actually interested. I would have advised someone like Jay Z to do exactly the same as he did or something similar. It doesn't benefit him in the long term to have the public brand him more the benefactor than the businessman (trust me, as someone in the philanthropy industry, the last thing any people of wealth wants is yet MORE people asking upon every event for a handout), and it benefits the people of any local community more for them to make donations themselves (even if small and nominal) to the communities in which they live, because it increases their sense of ownership over what those NGO's do with their money. When Prince & Jay Z have moved on from Baltimore, it'll be those local residents who shelled out cash, who will keep those NGO's and the community at large accountable for whatever progress they'll make. Rallying people behind a cause is NOT any less valuable in terms of long term community effects than direct donation. The problem is that we've been desensitized to intangible benefits ("positive externalities" in economic terms) and think that doing good has become synonymous with financial gifting. Both are nice and both have a place, but ignoring one for the sake of the other is massively naive IMO.

Baltimore?? I just keep reading and watching news clips about Prince and Jay Z. The news has moved on, no drama, no fights, arrests etc..etc....

just people having a good time. They will mentioned almost in a mumble about a charity. The concert or distraction helped many avoid

seeing the BIG elephant in the room. thumbs up! It worked!!

I do agree with your post. wink

There is no such thing as a free concert. lol

Either the people pay or corporate sponsors pay or the city pays out of their budget. Putting a show together that quickly you normally wouldn't have time for a committee or shareholder meeting.

Even the Farm Aid concert last year wasn't free... ticket prices went up to $175.

FYI Jayz matched all donations made through Tidal.

Jay Z could have paid for everyone then, but it was a big business deal, i'lll scratch your

back if you scratch mine type of deal. I hope Jay Z is figuring a way to resuscitate Tidal.

On a side note,

I liike Jay z and beyonce, i like that they seem very down to earth when it comes

to those who support their music careers. The picture shows that they are humble

enough to take a photo with ordinary children.

Why should he pay for everyone? And while you're at it, tell us what you have done to make the world a better place?

Or is that always somebody else's job? Why is it always what somebody else should do?

Isnt it funny how what somebody else is doing is never good enough but most of those yapping haven't done anything at all?

Coulda, shoulda, woulda......

Well if you are so quick to question somebody else you should be willing to give specifics examples of your mind blowing achievements.

You are correct. I cannot fathom people who seem envious of other people who get praise for trying to do something positive.

many questioned Prince's motives for quickly throwing together a lyrically mediocre song and putting together a "PEACE" rally but anyone who attended last night's show knows this was indeed a PRINCE move for self promotion.

The show sounded horrible with plenty of sound issues and it was clear there was no soundcheck, 3EG looked lost pretty much half the show. Did anyone catch him say where you at DETROIT? 30 minutes into the show? Then he realized his screw up and fix it 10 minutes later.

Prince failed to even introduce the Brown & Grey family, he simpled walked them to the front of the stage in darkness and threw his hand up , he probably didnt know their names.

His performance of "Baltimore" was lack luster and he failed to even introduce Eryn Allen.

There were merch tables full of PRINCE branded merchandise made just for this event both inside and outside the venue with his cartoon face, nothing with any type of motivation quote to leave with. How much of that money will go to Baltimore charities? most likely none.

Then there were the SEXUALLY charged parts:

"All the menfolk call me Prince, all the ladies call me Electric Man

'Cause when I plug in your socket, I do ya like nobody can!" - Prince during "The One" what man with a cause would perform such a tasteless line to sing during a "PEACE" rally with plenty of children in attendance?

"Where all the Nasty Girls at?" The pretend JW wants to get NASTY now at a PEACE rally?

This was clearly a ploy for publicity and self promotion. I dont know what Prince's definition of superstar artists is but there were none on that stage. Miguel barely sang and couldnt hold a note. Why on earth Prince would allow a no name singer like Estelle to sing his biggest hit on stage to a city who hadnt seen him perform in decades ? pretty dumb decision.

[Edited 5/11/15 8:12am]

...you know how they say everyone's entitled to their opinion? You're really abusing that right...

Indignation at mild innuendo at a Prince concert - seriously?!?!?

The self promoting Prince, promotes someone else. Brilliant.

my daughter wanted Beyonce, wasnt this a Jay Z co branded event? or maybe that star was too big for prince's stage to get a invite.

Are you on crack? This was a Prince concert not a Jay z or Beyoncé shoe both of them were there and I am sure they could have taken the stage but you do see other celebrities saying anything about riots because they are to worried about their money. Do you even realize how much crap Prince is getting forgetting involved in this. Right now he gets a 1 million a show he could get a large 100 city tour going and make plenty of money I do not think he needs to make up an event to get cash.

I emailed the charity a week ago and asked if Prince has donated already. Have not heard back yet and under "donors" on their website, Prince is still not listed. Shawn Carter is not listed either although it is reported he gave $1000.

Where was this indignation when Prince sung "wet circles around the toy/while you bring yourself to joy" from the song "Mellow" off The Rainbow Children album? Or when Prince sung "I wanna go down south...I can feel the blood racing with the thought of you tasting me" on the song "On The Couch" from Musicology album. "Hey Valentina/tell your mama/she should give me a call/If Penelope wants to cruz/There aint no way that we aint gon dance" from MPLSOUND. You would have a heart attack if you heard the song "Turn Me Loose" as performed on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno from 2008. These are songs that came early during his baptism as a Jehovah Witness and long after. As long as dude is keeping up with the tenets of his faith and is right with the God he praises, that's all that matters. This reminds me of the gossip you hear too often at churches.

Prince tried but not hard enough. It appeared Larry Graham stayed close

to help him stay focused but at the same time Prince had some

hard core fans that wouldn't accept his

changes. What was he to do? He had more people surrounding him that didn't

share the same

beliefs. He wanted to sing more about the new things that he

was learning, but it is a struggle

when you think you can do both you can't try to please God and 'money'/fans' too.

His fans are the ones that are keeping his houses, cars, food, vacations, parties, entourage, promotions, life styles..etc. going and going.

There's one person that so many hated on that seems to have

disappeared and that is Larry Graham and then we started to see

his look and attitude changing.

So the subtle provocative innunedos has increased

in his songs and concerts and I am sure conversations.

Younger individuals is who he liked to flock to,

I guess to keep him feeling sexually charged

and his sex appeal afloat. Speaking of sex, there was no doubt when he

had a part on New Girl, which is a show that is all based on SEX

that his morals and beliefs were changing.

More images of himself are all over the place.

The symbol is now back, which is nothing

but his Prince -worship -symbol and to

promote the 3rd eye/ Prince and the New Age movement.

If you dig deep into that movement all you want to do is eek

Now his current adventure is to really stand out

in the political arena and to promote that only mankind/people can

bring peace and then questioning if God is listening to folks prayers or even care.

So don't let it be a shock to you, there's nothing new under the sun.

Prince bleeds just like the rest ...we all need to understand that

we all need to look in the mirror and do some adjusting.

I'm still praying.

-----------------------------------------------------------

"Mirror, mirror what U see?
Have I still got those dark clouds over me?
Am I still feeling what I feel?
The last days of the devil's deal
Oh mirror, yeah, what U see?"-----Prince (TRC)

Just think of all the songs Prince hasnt played live in the last decade and half due to his imposed sensorship. If he is slowly coming back down to earth where reality resides, then he will feel so rejuvinated being able to perform all those previously banned songs. They will feel like brand new compositions to him. He must be chomping at the bit to sing Days of Wild correctly!
