Best concert since the 80's according to newspaper de Volkskrant

five stars out of five

I don't agree with that !

In 2002, he played some of his finest concerts.

I went to the Berlin concert that year, that was one of the best concerts I have ever seen by any artist ( and I have seen a lot !).

How beautiful do the words have to B, before they conquer every heart

After hearing and reading the great reviews this tour received in England I was excited to see him yet again. I was very disappointed. The sound was afwul. The hits section (first hour) was way too messy. 3rdEyeGirl is nof funk-band. After that it got slightly better. The best songs (to me) were Guitar, The love we make, Nothing compares 2 u, Purple rain and the piano set.

I don't get the reason behind this tour. It's not to promote Plectrum Electrum (why no Breakdown?) or the upcoming Purple Rain reissue. Playing the same old hits yet again is nice for the people that don't see hem that often. For me, I'm getting tired to hear Take me with u (afwul version), Rapsberry beret, Controversy, etc in substandard versions. Last year at the Paradiso I was blown away, but this show never got close to that. The Paradiso show had focus, energy, it had and served a purpose.

I doubt if Plectrum Electrum will ever see the light of day. I got the feeling that Prince has grown tired of the 3rdEyeGirl setup. He wants to funk now, and that's not what this band is about. Just my two cents.

Have tickets for Antwerp and am going. Hopefully I can take everything back I stated in this message.

[Edited 5/26/14 2:30am]

I don't think u should compare Paradiso to a 17.000 people concert......

Exactly. Very different venues, can't compare.

For me, there does not need to be a reason behind a concert, other than play music.

I loved it.

From where I was, I could only see Prince and Ida. Which was great.

Did miss the smile of Hannah and the magig of Donna, but hey, I got to see Prince really good, so I was happy!

I think this tour is to say goodbye to Europe. Like he said: we have to come to him now.

I'm just so thankful that he came to Amsterdam again.

And the girls are absolutely enigmatic and good.

The security guy told me it was the best concert he had seen in Ziggo Dome.

I loved the fact that so many people dressed in purple.

And Prince is amazing.

Thank you Prince for taking care of your body and not have trashed your body with alcohol or drugs too much. Because your smart choices, we can enjoy your talent and hard work on stage. I bow deeple for your live performances!

^Well said Djj. When I was watching him that night I also had the same thought, it's great that he has kept on the straight and narrow and hasn't descended into drink and drugs like many other music stars (esp. some that have passed). We all benefit massively for this.

It's also quite amazing to look at him and think this is the same person who's music who I grew up with and yet he's still going strong. Made me very appreciative.

In terms of the concert, what struck is is that he still looked so young and fresh and he was so energetic, sometimes I felt I was watching him in the late 70s with the Afro and the sheer energy and charisma! As when I've seen him before I was also impressed that he is always so polite and gracious to the audience and like the way he always makes an effort to look at all sections of the audience to engage them and make sure they are enjoying the show. I loved seeing some of his expressions on the big screen, he's still 'Got The Look'

He also played some tunes not often played like Condition of the Heart, What's My Name and The Love We Make (highlight for me) as well as old favs SOTT and Hot Thing. I absolutely love the funky rendition he does of Controversy. I noticed at one point it sounded like he was going to play Mutiny and also Nothing More but these morphed into intros to other songs. Fantastic.
There was some newer stuff towards the end, it sounds great, really hope he releases the Plectrum Electrum album!
The songs played before the concert started sounded especially promising, love this recent vibe.
I heard he rode a bike outside the venue before but I missed that! Still managed to get some good seats, had a fun time! I've seen about 5 concerts of his now and I think this was one of the best.
I had a feeling he will continue touring as he seemed right on form, seems like from the news now he will be...catch the show while you can!

Thanks.

It seemed he was not done with the concert at all!

The security guys sweeped us out, but I thought he was ready to come back for more!

Did you see the pictures in the Thread about the dress code?

Loved the audiance!

I travelled from Norway to see Prince at Ziggo Dome, and it was so worth it! It has cost me a lot of money but hey its Prince. The only minus for me, was travelling alone and going to the gig alone and having to wait in line not understanding a word of Dutch, I felt a little out of place. I had Golden Circle tickets, and arrived there 5 pm which I think was a little late since a lot of people was already there. I regret not arriving there a few ours in advance to get at the front, but I got to stand in 3rd line at the front, which ain't bad, but me being short I had to jump a bit to see what was happening on the stage haha.

Prince started playing ca. 20:30 pm, the songs that were played before he came on stage must be new ones right? I had not heard them before. The concert was fantastic, but not as good as when I saw him in Oslo in 2011, that show was insane. I also got on the stage then which was an added bonus. The songs at Ziggo Dome were all great including some rare ones, he was behind the keyboard a lot, more so then from previous concerts I've seen of him. A lot of ballads too!

Loved the purple dresscode and seeing all the Prince fans in purple was super funny and cool. Hot Thing live was superb. He also looked very funky and danced a lot, 3rdeyegirl performed very well together with Prince. The only thing that annoyed me was of course the no-photo-record-film rules, there were guards with flashlights at people who tried to take pics, that was a bit extreme I think.

I didn't take any pics myself in fear of being kicked out of the Arena haha. The sound was pretty good at the front, I had earplugs though, and I witnessed many people who didn't have that and thought the sound was too loud. Well at a concert always use earplugs even though you think the sound is low you will get hearing damage if you don't use them!

Ziggo Dome seemed packed, loved it. People next to me weren't crazy drunk either, and we had good room to dance a little. I would have loved the stage to be a little different for Prince though, maybe symbol stage, or something.

I'm sorry to hear you felt a bit alone. Next time, orgnote me, we can meet up somewhere.

You didn't get in contact with anybody?

I'm a big extrovert, always start talking to people around me. I lack that politeness you have.

Behind me in the cue outside were two gentlemen from Finland (If I remember correctly).

We managed to create a purple shawl for one of them, so he was in purple too.

Glad you enjoyed the concert.

Did you see the pictures I posted in the "Purple Dress Code" thread? Were you in one of the pictures?

Going to concerts alone is wonderful. You don`t have to take care of anybody`s needs, moans, feelings ( like: "It´s too hot", "My back is aching") and you can just enjoy yourself.

But I do enjoy fans talking before and after the show.Liitle Miss Strange, keep going to concerts alone and if you like open up and make friends for a day. confused

Embrace

Some Prince fans always have something to complain about.

They walk around with SOTT shirts and avatars and can't let go of how great it was 30 years ago

Or heck even 10 years ago.

Can't even truly enjoy the present, cuz you know, the past man, the magnificent past!

The concert was fabulous and I've seen dozens already.

The sound was loud, but not too loud or distorted and I don't have an hearing problem.

Prince's singing was absolutely stunning; amazing that he can still sing like that. He screamed like in the 80's and I never heard him change any "nasty lyrics".

Seems his voice is getting better with age, or maybe he just felt really good.

Sure seemed he had a great time as well, easy, playful and with a lot of audience interaction.

Never went off stage, except to change clothes 1 time and didn't get others to play his parts.

The band was tight. Donna and Hannah have greatly improved their (solo) skills. I can hear clearly now why he believes in them. Also nice how they started the show with a little audience talk.

And I really liked how he was positively reminiscing on "making a little movie here called SOTT in 1986/87".

Like he was saying: yeah I remember and loved that too, but this is now and now is also great.

I love seeing him 'play' there with all those great musician girls (Josh was always out of sight lol)

Sample set was great too; I don't care about those folks who complain about that being 'easy'. That's not the point: the songs he uses have electronically composed beats anyway, so he can sample them easily (as he did in the 80's too) and make it sound that way as the orginals, while he can still improvise with singing and playing, and switching beats and speed.
After 2,5 hours of fun(k) the entire venue of 17.000 people was still wanting more.

My personal highlights:

Let's go Crazy

When Doves Cry
Sign of the Times

Hot Thing

Nothing compares 2 U
The Love We make
Something in the Water...
What's my Name
How come U don't call me anymore
Condition of the Heart
The Beautiful Ones
Purple Rain

And in general: almost all of Prince's vocal, bass, piano and guitar solos.

In one word: Fabulous!

Heard What's My Name. I wish he played that in Leeds, sounds great!

Edit: Love how it mixes the lyrics of Sacrifice of Victor, 'I was born on blood stained table/ cord wrapped around my neck/ born a little different from all those other Princes' Such a great lyric.

A little off topic, but What's My Name is intense and dark and angry, I would love a Prince album like that!

I agree with you. I go alone or with somebody who listens to the music and does not need attention.

But being alone the whole trip can be a bit lonely, though.

Yes. That created an overly hostile situation. That goon was flashing his light almost throughout the show and most of the time in our direction. That was quite annoying. I also found that public service announcement in the beginning preposterous. I don't need a 20something girl tell me how to best enjoy my concert. When I pay 100 € for a concert I want to keep some mementos e.g. pictures and videos for myself. Really, if Prince hates having his picture taken so much he should stay at home and only do concerts at Paisly Park. That whole thing really pissed me off.

I liked the show and had a good day at the maritime museum and the zoo, instead of queing. But even though I had a great seat close to the stage it's just not the same. I need to be upfront to really enjoy the show.

But I too was amazed at how many people have purple clothes... that was funny at my metro stop, to see who is going ot the concert and who is going somewhere else.
