Doors opened 90 minutes late at midnight and then they filmed members of the band dancing in pimp costumes for about 5 minutes and then just a regular dance party with a new remix and a new song (I believe as I don't follow him close enough to know for sure). No sign of Prince. Left early so it's possible that something happened but there was no stage set up in the NPC Music Club room they had us in. All of the band was present and they were carrying in instruments so it's possible something happened but doubtful. It started snowing so I made my get away before the roads got too bad.

I got there late at around 1:30 so I missed the extended version of "Groovy Potential", remix of "FixUrLifeUp" and apparently a few other songs that even the hardknocks gave their props on. We worked up a sweat for a good hour and a half, watched about 20 minutes of the Montreux show, then danced some more. All of a sudden the soundstage doors open and Liv's band is in full swing. I repeat, Liv's band. She delivered a high energy set with full production. The best part was watching Prince ease through the crowd and stand behind folks (sometimes dancing himself) without them noticing. It was a fun time after a hard day's work and like I said sometimes you just gotta be there. Peace biggrin

I personally did not like the new song but they said it was newly created in 2014. I kept thinking Prince is too old to be making music that seems like he is trying to copy the trends. It was very electronic in the beginning but it did end with some cool guitar work. Honestly as I was listening I was trying to remember some parts in case anyone asked but 12 hours later it is gone from my memory.

I would put the chances of that at 100 pecent and good for her. Either she rushed home and had some fun with her partner or alone but there was just too much excitement for it to not manifest itself sexually smile

I want to hear the extended Groovy Potential! I was just listening to the original today and getting into into it. Hopefully the Fixurlifeup remix does not involve that Purple Music guy. Anyway, looking forward to the Super Bowl and a great year

yeah me 2 since Groovy Potential is my favorite Prince song of 2013, I don't care much 4 the Fixurlifeup remix if it's the same remix he played in Stockholm, that one was awful. I'm also curious about the new song, I hope Prince will release it soon

After a days rest I can finally give my review of the dance party.

I was on only my second date with a girl 2 hours away and we were at a loss on what to do Friday night when I happened to see Dr. Funkenberry's post about a dance party at Paisley Park with the doors opening at 10:30. The time was 8:30 and I asked her if she would like to see "Prince's studio" and she said "hell yes" so we immediately headed north (we were exactly a 2 hour drive away).

We got to Paisley at about 10:40 and there were only about 8 cars in the lot and I was afraid that it was a hoax but the gate was open and I could see movement inside the front door. One of the best things about waiting for a Paisley party is seeing the people in the lot constantly walking up to the door and back asking security when doors will open. This was very amusing since for once I got to wait in my warm vehicle instead of lining up for hours on end outside in the elements.

At midnight one of the security guys came out and flashed his flashlight at us in the cars signalling the doors are opening. At this point there were maybe 20-25 cars in the lot...I expected many more but was not complaining!

We walked in and paid our 10 dollar cover charge and were directed into the small room located just west of the main soundstage where a DJ was setup blasting a mixture of Prince tracks and classic funk at full volume. It sounded amazing. My date and I took a spot at the couch closest to the DJ and after a few minutes 4 guys came out dancing through the crowd dressed in full 70s pimp gear. I later learned these were NPG members.

Some camera guys set up lights on both sides of the dance floor in preperation for what looked like some sort of photo shoot. The "pimps" took a few people from the crowd and started teaching them a certain dance as the camera guys started filming. I later learned that Donna and Hannah came out and joined the dancers but I could not see them from my vantage point. After about 15 minutes of this the lights were taken down and the regular dance party resumed.

A little before 1:00 I noticed all of 3rdEyeGirl on the dance floor along with the big trombone player for NPG. (Hard to miss him!) They were dancing and looked to be having an awesome time. At about 1:15 I happened to look out at the edge of the dance floor and saw the tell-tale afro of Prince surveying the festivities. He would periodically come out onto the floor then retreat to the back of the room in and stand in the shadows. No matter how many times I seem him it is still so surreal...especially when he happens to be chilling 15 feet away from you.

One of the coolest aspects of this dance party and I assume the other ones he has thrown is that the crowd gives Prince and his band a lot of respect and do not hound them like superfans. I admit I was tempted to go talk to him but I had no idea what I would say!

At around 2:00 the DJ stopped the music and the big screen behind him which had been showing a backdrop of Finding Nemo (not kidding) all night switched over to a picture of the same stage Prince used for the NPG show back in October.

For a second I thought it was a live feed from the next room but once the music started I realized it was simply amazing footage of the Montreux concert with NPG and 3rdEyeGirl. I'm a huge fan of live DVDs and I have to say the sound and editing of this one was virtually perfect...the killer sound system in the room didn't hurt either!

All of 3rdEyeGirl was sitting right in front of our couch on the floor rocking out to the DVD. I have to admit it was cool when Hanna or Donna was closeup on the screen and I could look down and watch their reactions 5 feet from me! smile

We got to see the Act of God medley along with Take me With U sequed into Rasberry Beret. The Cool/MJ mashup was also played either before or after but I can't remember for sure the exact order. I was completely jamming out during the show too...such a tight funky performance!

Once the DVD stopped Nemo resumed on the backdrop and the dance party continued until about 3:00 when all of the sudden the wall seperating the room from the soundstage literally slid open to reveal Liv and her band playing on the stage. Something like this was so cool and is typical Paisley Park!

The security directed the crowd into the other room and Prince followed directly behind us.

It was surreal being dead center on the rail in front of the stage watching a Liv performance with only about 40 other people! I continue to be impressed with Liv and her powerhouse vocals. She sang like she was in front of an arena sized crowd! All the while during her 45 minute set Prince was behind us dancing and giving cues to the sound man and little directions on little tweaks such as the sound of the snare by making a tapping motion with his hand.

3rdEyeGirl watched the show from one of the elevated platforms on the side of the soundstage so I had a feeling that we were not going to get a Prince show but I was in no way dissapointed. Once Liv's set was over I looked back and saw Prince shake the sound man's hand and make his way to his favorite exit door at the back of the room. One of the crowd yelled "thanks Prince!" and he turned around and smiled while waving back at us. Moments like this are almost too cool to put into words!

Security directed us back into the adjoining room where the DJ continued to play music but you could tell the night was winding down. At around 4:00 the lights came on and they put out all the candles that were on the tables so we knew that this dance party was over. Before we left Liv was waiting with her band for their ride and we had a chance to talk to her. She is one of the nicest ladies I have ever met and told us to drive home safe since in her words it was really bad outside.

Little did we know that in the 4 hours we had been inside 6 inches of snow had fallen! A note to others: if you are going to roadtrip to Paisley make sure you check the weather forecast. wink

Thankfully I have a 4 wheel drive truck and the 2 hour drive home ended up taking over 4 since I had to contend with 2 foot drifts and large snow plows all the way home.

Was the trip worth it you might ask? Hell yes!!! Any chance you might get to go to Paisley for ANYTHING I would advise you to do it.

See you next time!

Thanx man! What a great review. Eye wanted to ask U was Liv's band Prince's NpG band? But U didn't even recognize his own Npg horn players in thier pimp gear lol. Eye also wonder why Prince never showcased Shelby J this way? Her album been out 4 months!!!

U never mentioned how Ur date liked the show? biggrin

Sorry, I missed a few things. It was indeed Liv's band which included a lot of NPG members. The members played the show in their "Pimp Gear" so that's when I finally put 2 and 2 together. haha

And yes my date loved the show and especially Liv's performance. As soon as we got home she looked up Liv on the internet and purchased her album.
