Can't lie: I was enjoying myself too much to really care about remember the setlist for the second set. But I do remember a few played (and some previously mentioned):

*Piano Song (I'm gonna kick myself for not knowing it, but despite the somewhat negative commentary from one reviewer, it really helped set the mood)

"ENDORPHINMACHINE"!! (2nd Song)

"Screwdriver"

"I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man"

(I'm not sure, but maybe what another reviewer refers to as) "2Y2D"

"Guitar"

"Chapter And Verse"

"Plectrum Electrum"

"When We're Dancing Slow And Close"

"She's Always In My Hair"

"FixUreLifeUp"

"Bambi"

"Dreamer"

..................................

I'm sure there was more...

Oh, and one of the guitar licks he played during an extended was "Erotic City"

ENDORPHINE MACHINE?!!!! How was it? Was it the entire song? How were his solos?

I think subjectively that the song just ripped. It was pretty good. I'm pretty sure it was the entire song and the soloing was solid. I'm pretty sure he gave Donna some of it.

Also: Donna is killing it. KILLING IT. Those who had a chance to hold her up when she back-bent into the audience were lucky.

Cool! Thanks for the info...I have 4 shows coming up this week, and I will freak the f@%# out if I hear Endorphine Machine.

Sounds like a show most of us orgers would love to see..... I know I wanna.

Not one reveiwer mentioned Endorphine? Had to hear about it from an orger... good gawd..why even read the reviews of those who do not know his music --other than 'the hits'......

%uFEFF%uFEFFReview: Prince delivers unpredictable, uneven performance in Vancouver

First of four Vogue theatre gigs an eye-popping, overpriced jam session

http://www.vancouversun.c...story.html

Prince

Monday night (early show) | Vogue Theatre

VANCOUVER - Would it be enough?

That was the real question at the first of four Prince concerts in Vancouver Monday night at the Vogue Theatre.

Would Prince be able to silence those who were becoming increasingly skeptical that the Purple One would be able to pull off the quadruple gig stunt he planned to repeat in several other cities during his West Coast “residency” tour?

Fans were concerned as well.

There was the ticket price, a whopping $275 for a fixed two-hour set that would likely prevent the usual string of surprises and multiple encores that are Prince’s trademark.

But could seeing the diminutive genre-defying guitar god up close and and personal in a room where you have the possibility of finding yourself at the front, covered in Purple sweat, be priceless? The excitement bordered on the feverish early on, but the buzz faded quickly.

With the concerts in danger of being under-attended, the Vogue created a 2-for-1 deal for its newsletter subscribers. The strategy worked, reinvigorating stagnating sales but in turn infuriating fans that had eagerly scooped up their tickets long ago.

This came on the heels of the unexpected announcement of a tour launch party at the Portside Pub on Sunday, which for $25 offered a sneak peek at Prince’s new band 3rdEyeGirl as well as Prince fave DJ Rashida, complete with a surprise glimpse at a new album tentatively titled Plectrum Electrum, discount offers for Vogue concert tickets, and ticket giveaways. (Prince also showed up briefly, to boot.)

Then Monday afternoon, just a few hours after the two early shows had been declared sold-out: 100 free tickets for the floundering late shows were given to Portside boss Mark Brand to sell via his restaurant Save-On-Meats for as low as $50, with the money going to charity.

A classy move, but hardly a sign of demand trumping supply.

So was it enough?

Right at the eight o’clock stroke (a feat, to be honest), Roger Nelson kicked into an ear-blasting, eye-popping four-piece band gig where he lead 3rdEyeGirl -- Toronto-bred guitarist Donna Grantis,

bassist Ida Nielsen and drummer Hannah Ford -- into a rock-heavy display full of electric guitar riffage.

“Are you all ready for some lip-syncing?” he jokingly asked as lyrics from new song Screwdriver appeared on screen.

Not a chance.

Garbed in his long black coat and sporting high heels that never seemed to hinder his strut, Prince played it fast and loose, incorporating a few old riffs into new tunes, jamming out some unknown material for the better part of the first half of the show.

If you wanted the hits, it would probably have to wait after Grantis and Prince played a few wah pedal-heavy face melters and electric funk-rock jams in front of a backdrop of swirling psychedelia and smashing glass.

Plectrum Electrum, whether a full Prince album or not, is going to contain some real scorchers.

One does not question Prince’s creative decisions, but you could be excused for being close to losing your cool as Prince wasted a good five minutes playing a schmaltzy electricity-laden piano-rock instrumental that sounded like a cheesy movie soundtrack, complete with blossoming flowers on screen.

Redemption came a few moments later in the form of a red-hot I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man and an all-too-short snippet of Guitar, which finally got the crowd singing along.

But it was quickly back into jam mode with 3rdEyeGirl, Prince and the girls going all Zeppelin on the Vogue crowd, with new single FixUrLifeUp coming after another long, funkified blast of guitars, bass and drums.

“Don’t worry about doing what the crowd loves, just worry about doing what you love,” Prince sang on the grunge-inspired tune.

Fitting, because Prince was doing exactly what he wanted, even if that meant going nowhere fast extending new track I Like It There into a 10-minute session.

You just had to hang on for the ride and make the most of it, soaking in the strobe lights, the guitar fury, and the spectacular HD projections that must have justified at least half the price of the ticket alone.

“You might want to stick around, something amazing is about to go down,” Prince sang 80 minutes in, which is also the point at which the band said goodbye, leaving the crowd clamoring for an encore that should have come much later.

Prince and 3rdEyeGirl would return for a revamped, White Stripes-ified version of Let’s Go Crazy, Ida Nielsen showing off her bass skills, Grantis lying down on her amps as she nailed her solo.

And then it seemed it was all over. Despite fans calling out for more (and with many having already left), Prince would not return.

“One more song!” chanted the befuddled fans.

Prince wasted a good 25 minutes of potential show time leaving his fans standing, returning only at the very last minute for a half-hearted remedial jam incorporating Billy Cobham’s classic Stratus.

For the asking price, whether the artist’s name was Prince or not, it wasn’t nearly enough.

------- Here we go!! If he does the hits hard core fans complain if he does a after/show/jam type concert he gets nailed by the music media. I also wish everyone would stop worrying about the ticket price. If you can afford it great if you cannot catch him next time around. If the 200.00 tickets do not put butts in the seat he will bring the prices down.

Much effort seemed to have gone into getting the band tight enough.

Even though it was the same set (with the one exception) there was a bit of difference playing wise.

Some songs were longer first set, and vice verca. And other little differences like Donna laying across her amps just wailing first set (amazing visual), and her falling backwards into the crowd (and me!) second set. Seriously, I think she maybe out-posed Prince! If you're a fan of long guitar jams and rock moves, you'll be fine.

Honestly, it does sound like my dream show. Bambi? Endorphinmachine? I Like It There? Extended rock/funk jams? Small venue?

You're right, I'm worrying too much. Why would I even think about refudning these tickets? This is Prince at his best and most creative! Recalls stuff like the Gold Experience or Sign O' The Times. Totally digging that 'fro, too. smile

I didn't check the watch that often. But around 11:40-1:40. Two hour set I think.

I don't think you'll be disappointed. I'm going to both shows tonight and I don't regret it. And I overheard some who went to the first show that the firstshow seemed like a warm up and that the band was bringing it the second show.

Yeah, that. Probably just working on getting familiar. I think Ida and Hannah seemed a bit more dialed in and comfortable. Donna was giving it, GIVING IT, but there were times where it seemed like she was really making a concerted effort to be mindful of Prince's cues and direction. It didn't distract from the performance at all, I just personally am interested in non-verbal communication. And I could see her focusing on him at times (I'm guessing these were parts where Prince was extending jams).

And practicing with a band for hours on end is completely different from performing with a band.

But all in all, the performance I saw was not disappointing. And I'm not some dick-riding, Prince-can-do-no- wrong Org-er.

Cyra, you're gonna love it! I was one of those diehards who bought 4 tix (at $275 each) the hour they went on sale. I was pretty bummed when they started blowing them out at half price (and cheaper). But when he launched into Endorphinmachine, it was all worth it!

P better prepare for a series of negative reviews...lol....If he's doing an AFTER SHOW, then that setlist would more than fly....But these are not aftershows, folks...People are paying over $200 bucks to see Prince live at a real show...And trust me...They don't want to hear obscure and new material as the bulk of the gig....

The diehards will dig this....But you gotta do a more balanced gig for the masses...It's not like dude doesn't have any "rock guitar" fueled hits...All this to say, prepare for that good hate, folks....lol...It's about to get nasty....

I have tix for the AZ shows and have been eagerly awaiting the reviews of Vancouver. As far as I'm concerned, Prince could play twinkle twinkle little star and I'd dig it. BUT we are taking some first time Prince concert goers and they definitely just know the big hits. It WOULD be nice if he would mix it up a little at least.... At $275 a ticket in AZ, it'd be tough to call it worthwhile if people don't know any of the songs....
