I am curious as to where the people that said the sound quality was poor were sitting. Where you are sitting makes a huge difference in the sound. If you are not on the floor or at least the first level, the mix will not be good. I have been to quite a few GA concerts and as you move around you can really tell the difference. It may sound amazing on the floor but once you go up to the second level it will be terrible. So where were you all sitting?

I think it’s pretty rare that I sound like a fam around here. I think I’ve earned the right to do it now.

Prince was on fire tonight. I know there are some complaints about the setlist being old. All I can say is…you had to be there. Tonight’s concert is one of the best concerts of his I’ve ever seen, and I honestly do not say that lightly. Below are some random highlights and recollections from me. I hope they do the show justice.

________________________

  • I got to hear Prince sing “When We’re Dancing Close and Slow.” This old gem is one of my favorites, and I never thought I’d hear him do it live. As a duet with the incomparable Cassandra Wilson, it was a wonderful treat.
  • Prince also came out to perform during Maceo Parker’s set. He ran through some blistering guitar work during “We Gon Make It Funky,” and it was some of the best sounding guitar work I’ve ever heard from him. Prince kept that high standard going the entire evening. There were several times where I found myself thinking that he is indeed a better guitar player now than he ever was before.
  • I fell in love with “Little Red Corvette” all over again tonight. I don’t need to be reminded how many times I’ve heard the song before. I honestly have never heard it performed better than tonight. Ever.
  • Shelby waved a giant white flag with a blue angel on it during “Purple Rain.” Maybe it was a tribute to her father? I hope so, and if so, I hope the crowd’s singing brought her some comfort and peace.
  • I don’t completely understand the Welcome 2 America theme yet, but I love that there is one. Before the show began, such ‘80s songs as “Mutiny” and “Shockadelica” played over the speakers while the 1959 movie Black Orpheus was broadcast (with subtitles) on the big screens. When Prince and his band came out, his backup singers were dressed in flapper style (a very nice touch). I don’t know what it means, or even if it’s supposed to mean anything, but I love it.
  • When Prince did “Guitar,” he made me realize just how much fun that song can be. And once again, his guitar playing here was phenomenal. It was also fun to see him do a new trick (at least new to me) with his playing: The gold guitar was hanging from a strap that went over his shoulder, of course, and at one point, he was strutting around the stage while effortlessly playing the guitar, which was positioned behind him (he was walking kind of sideways, with the guitar pushed out behind his back). I don’t know if I’m describing it well, but it was a cool-looking move.
  • As the second encore began, the hydraulic lift began to rise and instead of Prince, it was Sheila E. and her timbales coming through the stage. People often say Sheila is looking “better than ever” or something equally clichéd, but there’s almost no other way to describe how incredibly gorgeous she looked. First, she’s incredibly svelte with toned arms. Second, she was dressed in a sexy black-and-white tank top and painted-on black leather pants. Third, and the total piece de resistance, were her super—and I mean SUPER—hot stiletto heels. She looked badass and fierce as she pounded the hell out of the timbales during “The Glamorous Life” and “A Love Bizarre” and her encore solo. (She was wearing a big black wig that was kind of too big for her slight frame, but so what.)
  • Prince asked Sheila to stay after her set, and he asked if she’d like the backup singers to fetch her some men to dance for her. Sheila said yes, she’d like that, and the girls obliged by gathering some very fine young men to dance. One in particular was the standout. A guy in a white shirt kept doing the coffee-grinder splits, which the crowd loved.
  • Prince’s voice was spot-on throughout the entire show. Even better, his screams were spot-on (meaning they were beautifully pitched and perfectly in key, even when singing “Adore” and “Scandalous” and “Kiss”).
  • Prince’s moves were also incredible. He was bursting with energy. It was infectious.

________________________

Okay, that’s my take. I maybe could have done without “Love Thy Will Be Done” and “Eye Love U But Eye Don’t Trust U Anymore,” but then again, those songs have never been favorites of mine. Aside from that, I loved it far more than I was even expecting. And I had high hopes for tonight going in. He just managed to surpass them in every way possible.

Thus ends my fam session. biggrin

if he does the setlist like he did 2night ..oh yeah there will be zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

never saw one artist so stuck in one year like he does with as much proflic output like he has within him

When r u fans going 2 realise that Prince has to perform his major hits for big stadiums tours.

if i wanna see the stone then that's okay but someone as proflic as prince doesn't have 2 do that ..when will the "fans" realize there is more 2 him then a album from 1984?

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

L4, if he's playing in an arena, it's obvious there are fans of various levels going to these shows, so it's expected that he plays some of those classics/hits, mixed in with recent and new material, to please fans from all those levels. You have to remember, it was the fans who made many of those songs hits, and turned them into classics, when they ran out and purchased them. So what's the problem that he plays some of those classics, when it's many of the fans who attend these arena shows and o expect to hear him play some of them? biggrin All Prince fans have different tastes in his music, so he plays a little bit of everything to please them.

but where is the mix tho? the old prince did use a mix but he's forgotten that formula and it's a tragedy imo

Chile I don't care about no Let's Go Crazy. I wanna hear Mountains, Power Fantastic, 17 Days, Alphabet St, Endorphinmachine, Live Can Be So Nice (if he does that with Sheila I will PASS THE HELL OUT!). I don't need songs from Purple Rain to make my life complete...but I am here on the org which for the most part means I'm not your average casual fan. Ask the avg Prince fan if they've ever heard Power Fantastic. They'd be like ???????

I still say there are three more shows to go, so who knows what's gonna be on the next setlist. I'm ready. It's freaking 2am and I'm so amped I can't even sleep like I just got back from a show or something. I need to calm down...

Your right when he said Good Night during Purple Rain those folks were clearing ouuta there and i was too happy to take their better seats.... Round 3 for me tomorrow excited

It was funny that people left then. I was like, He hasn't even played for an HOUR yet. Do you really think this is it?"

When the house lights came up, I did think that was going to be it, and so did a ton of people who piled out of there. They missed a helluva finale, though.
