Well, thank goodness I wasn't late to the Park - who'd'a' thunk he'd start on time?

At 11:10, the band took the stage, followed shortly thereafter by Our Man. He had on (from what I could tell under the colored lights) a black satin tunic with self-fabric fringe, his black stretchy pants, and a pair of furry, knee-high boots with lights in the wedge heels. This was the only outfit he wore all night - the first time I've ever been to a Prince concert that didn't have a wardrobe change.

He started off the evening with the Hohner in hand for the following:

No More Candy 4 U
Old Skool Company (with a Purple Rain tease)
Stand
Turn Me Loose
I Want You Back
Dance 4 Me
1999
I Feel 4 U

Then he launched into a version of Controversy that wound itself around All Day, All Night, Le Freak, Northside, Dancin' Machine and Housequake before coming back to Controversy.

From there...

Why U Wanna Treat Me So Bad
Take Me With U

And then...he started Anotherloverholenyohead...but stopped, saying, "I love this song...and I'm gonna wanna play a looooong solo. So lemme switch guitars."

He left for a second...and returned with his crimson Strat. He proceeded to tear up Anotherlover...with Rock Lobster worked in.

Then it was on to...

Guitar
Raspberry Beret

Exactly one hour in, Prince left the stage for Shelby to sing "In the Arms of the Angels." Mr. Hayes put on his chutch hat (I ain't kiddin' - it was a big white hat with an organza bow on it) and played some serious organ. It was quite something.

Prince returned (along with the Hohner) for a meandering and heartfelt 4ever in My Life. Lovely.

From there, he picked up the tempo:

Mountains
Shake Your Body

Larry joined him for:

Everyday People
I Want to Take You Higher
Long Train Runnin' (Wow - what a surprise that was! And it was awesome. Shelby on vocals for this.)
Thank You
Sing a Simple Song
Play That Funky Music (at the close of this, he handed his guitar to the audience)

Prince and band left the stage exactly two hours after the show began.

The first encore took it even higher:

Uptown
Let's Work
Cool
Kiss (back to the funky version - not the rock-y one he's done of late)

The rest of the band left the stage and Prince did a lovely, gentle Sometimes It Snows in April.

He took it back up again with

The Bird
Jungle Love
The Glamorous Life

The second encore was Purple Rain. He did something I've never heard - took the whole thing down to a guitar solo that sounded like a beating heart. It was just plain incredible.

They had some sound issues, but it was an awesome show.

The whole "park and ride" thing worked pretty well, too. They could have used another bus when people were leaving, but all in all, it was a good system. We were fortunate that it wasn't too cold.

Great report, Genesia. Thanks!

That rendition of Purple Rain sounds really beautiful.

I don't think it was sold out. I went there at 7:00pm to buy tickets and after waitng an hour and a 1/2 we got up to buy our tickets and they said if you bought your wristband you could not leave. I wasn't about to stand out there for 3 more hours waiting, so I went back home. We went back at 10:30pm and parked the next street over from Paisley and got in no problem, only about 10 people in line. He started at 11:10pm, which was a shock. It was raining when we left, felt sorry for the people waiting for the bus to get to the park and ride.

Thanks, motherfunka. Sounds like everything went pretty smoothly tonight. I'm glad to hear that for the sake of everybody who went..but also because I selfishly hope this successful night will lead to more concerts or parties out at Paisley.

I couldn't agree more. That was AWESOME. His little dance moves were great too. There was nothing wrong with that hip tonight!

My biggest highlight has to be Forever In My Life. That could have gone on for another hour and I woulda been in heaven. Those 10 minutes were worth the price of admission.

Anotherlover was fricking amazing too. Stopping the song so he could pull out his other guitar and do it justice... awesome.

And it was very, very happy to hear Mountains. mushy

woot!

Fuuuuck, I got to the concert around the tail end of All Day/All Night and was hoping I didn't miss much. Oh well, what I saw was great. Lots of energy behind the performances. Mountains was awesome live, Forever in my Life was really cool, and he seemed a lot more interested in Kiss and Purple Rain than he usually is. Those were my highlights, but I enjoyed the whole thing.

Great set list, like the Grand Palais en La Cigale shows, as I predicted.
So, no Michael Bland in the house wink

So, would this really be his last show in 2009 ????

I'm in Michigan and I waited for as long as I could for an update. I'm on my way to an assignment and was wondering what the hell happened in the Minni-apple!

I'm glad to see that it went well and Prince in HIS own way...paid tribute to Michael Jackson! I can clapping that!

INCREDIBLE SHOW

you have the set lists, some clarifications:

the parking and bus ride was VERY CONVENIENT and EASY.

At 10:30 they were still selling walk-up tickets.

There were three cameras set up at the back of the room (concert was in the big sound stage, of course).

there were couches set up for VIPs

I got to meet and talk with: Bria, Larry Graham, George Clinton, Morris Hayes.

They were selling 3121 Tambourines, CDs, and a 3 dollar coat check that filled up fast. Also bottled water for 3 bucks.

It was sprinkling a little when we left, other wise it was a mild evening.

Also, when Prince opened, he opened with No More Candy 4 U and he started and stopped ON PURPOSE. As in teasing "no more 4 u" then good night. Then he came back, did it a little longer, then "good night" again. wink He was HAVING FUN!

It was an incredible show, and any bootleg will never do it justice.

Still it's nice to know, when our bodies wear out, we can get another

Sound freaking awesome, The Time songs, wow, that just asks to shake your moneymaker!
Great review Genesia, did you make notes? Because I always find it amazing that people remember so many song.
Sometimes it snow in April gave me goosebumps in Paris mushy

And omg three hours for 20 euro's, I'm still flabbergasted, that itself is ridiculous.

The O2 didn't cost anything, his cd's don't cost anything. Whoever on the org dares to say that Prince is only about the money disbelief

Not my preferred setlist, but I'm sure he turned it out. Nice to see some Jacksons in there.

The logistics went smoothly, the needy will get help and he kept his word from way back on 7-7-7.
