Star Tribune: "Call to 'bestest friend' made Prince late" From the Star Tribune:
Call to 'bestest friend' made Prince late
Wanna know why Prince might have been so late for his three shows on Saturday? Last update: July 09, 2007 – 1:13 AM Wanna know why Prince might have been so late for his three shows Saturday? At noon, he had one of his people call guitarist Wendy Melvoin, formerly of Prince & the Revolution, and summon her from L.A. to play that afternoon in Minneapolis. After leaving her 14-month-old son with grandma, Melvoin headed to the airport. She couldn't arrive in time for the 4 p.m. performance at Macy's (which actually started at 5:10). In fact, she landed in the Twin Cities at 9:15 p.m., 45 minutes after the Target Center show was scheduled to begin. Melvoin had performed with Prince in the past two weeks at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel so she was relatively up to speed. But when she got to Target Center, she received a surprise: "We're opening with 'Purple Rain,' " Prince said. "You're on." It was grab your guitar and hit the stage at 10:05 p.m. During the Target Center, Prince called Melvoin "my bestest friend in the world." Is that true? "Apparently," she said with a sarcastic shrug on Sunday night. Melvoin will play at Prince's 21-concert run next month in London. For those, she'll bring her son and a nanny. It has to be infuriating to be Prince's friend at times...
MJ was a brilliant singer/dancer...best of all time, however, that's all he was. Let's not compare him to Prince, best musician of all time, but rather, compare him to someone like Sammy Davis Jr (who I don't hear anyone calling a musical genius).

would Prince do the same in return??

I wanted to know about the kid too.... Selective hearing is wonderful... 'cause sometimes the answer to your question is not what you wanted to hear...

I'm glad he's working with Wendy again... I would have liked to have seen The Time at this show though. Was Wendy @ the First Ave aftershow as well??? Also, Prince is almost never late to a gig... so Bream and everybody else should cut the man a little slack.

I'm really glad they are playing together again. I think she brings out something special in Prince cuz he obviously feels comfortable around her and has a tight bond with her.

Prince is ALWAYS late. I have been to over 50 shows and it starts "FASHIONABLY LATE" all the time. Me and wife went to Paisley Park for the filming of "Raveun2theyear2000" for New Years Eve. (Which by the way wasn't nowhere near December 31, 1999, we just had to pretend!). Any way, the show was supposed to start at 8:30 I believe and at 10:00 we were still standing outside the gates of the property freezing our ***** off in 25 degree weather.

Is that true? "Apparently," she said with a sarcastic shrug on Sunday night. Ha. Something tells me they don't even talk, let alone are they best friends. He didn't even call her himself.

Could it be that the child is the child of Wendy and Lisa ? You´re the Wendy and Lisa expert here on the org, so maybe you have a little bit more inside info ? [Edited 7/9/07 12:27pm]
