This is not "total madness". You may disagree with this decision, but this decision makes sense and is coherent with France's secular tradition and legal framework. Once again, feel free to check my posts on this subject in the above-referred thread. Peace There are no kings on this Earth, only Princes

If the scarf wasn't tied to the oppression of women, and let's face it folks there is no other valid reason other than forcing women to hide and be subjected to the edicts of men, then I might view it in a different light.

I support the separation of church and state all the way. I also support freedom of religion. It doesn't belong in schools and govermnent institutions. Co-signed! History of religions should be taught in public schools though (knowledge brings peace and mutual understanding). This is something this French bill provides for by the way. So it's not like they are attacking religion iself. They're just trying to avoid the problems that come with mixing the 2. 2009: Mermaids and Dolphins...

However, the French Minister of Education said yesterday that Jewish and Muslim pupils will be authorized to skip school that day in order to celebrate either Yom Kippour or the "Aïd". It's a bit hypocritical but I guess the end result is all in all the same. There are no kings on this Earth, only Princes

As I said in the other thread, it is another attempt at destroying the individual in the name of the nation. America is headed in this direction and god help us all if we get there. It's another attempt at making everyone equal. The greatest tool of the Communists.

There is no reason for the government to forbid somebody from wearing a symbol of their own religion. I agree...however, in this case the headscarf is seen as symbolic of denying women equality. I think that's why it's such an issue. 2009: Mermaids and Dolphins...

[This message was edited Thu Dec 18 15:23:02 PST 2003 by katt] I'm well aware of how English schools deal with religions (my girlfriend's been brought up in Devon) and do also believe that children benefit from being taught "every religion under the sun" as you said. This will hopefully be the case soon in France as well, as this new bill provides precisely for mandatory courses about the history and principles of religions. However, banning veils and other conspicuous religious signs is based as I said on the willingness to favor secularity, so that France does not become a juxtaposition of secluded religious communities. (Favoring secularity has nothing to do with communism per se by the way.) In any case, I do believe that by banning conspicious symbols and organizing "religion courses" at the same time, France has come up with a well-balanced solution to this issue (as it is an issue given France's Republican traditions and values). I hope that this law, once enacted, will increase tolerance and respect among kids, no matter what their religious/ethnic background is. Off to bed! Peace. Leave it out of the school and leave it out of the government. that case was just silly and i believe if you want a state recognised identification card, you must show your face for the picture. it's much more different than this. as i have said, separation of church and state is to keep governments from using religion as a basis for law or to keep government from supporting one religion over another. think about this... what if there was a law saying you were not allowed to be gay while in school or a government building. you had to look just like everyone else, talk just like everyone else and talk about women's breasts like every other male. (you know you want to do that anyway! you would complain because that is taking away your freedom of sexual orientation. is it really that much different than freedom of religion? another thing to think about. if this law does not exist, who is being harmed? what does it have to do with you? does it infringe on anyone's rights? like homosexual marriage, it doesn't harm anyone so what is the problem with it? there is no problem... correct? From a purely practical standpoint, do you think it's easy to determine whether a 14-year old girl is wearing a veil because she spiritually wants to or because she is told to do so? I think it's horribly difficult. Certain Muslim girls are under a huge pressure to wear veils, refuse to attend certain classes that contradict their beliefs (sports, science, etc.), to be seated near boys, etc. Don't you think it is up to the State to actually protect these girls? The only risk at stake here is that their parents will not budge and have their girls quit public school and enroll in private Muslims schools (which are scare in France for the time being). That's a real risk I have to admit. But I guess one must draw a line in the end. The more I think of it, the more I hold this subject as a very important and complex subject. And by the way, do you think women in Iran have a choice not to wear veils? [This message was edited Thu Dec 18 16:23:16 PST 2003 by DaFunkFreak] There are no kings on this Earth, only Princes

NO!!! No it isn't the responsibility of the state! This is where my comments about Communism ring true. People laugh them off, but really think hard about it. The government taking away the rights of individuals is a huge part of Communism. Government dependence is another huge step and we all know the French are very dependent on their socialized government systems. What is next? Will they ask all Jews to wear a number tattoed on their arm and a blue star of david? All muslims must wear black all day, every day? It is not the government's right nor responsibility to tell people what to wear and how to practice their religion. It is a method of control! The only risk at stake here is that their parents will not budge and have their girls quit public school and enroll in private Muslims schools (which are scare in France for the time being). That is better in order that they may be known (to be Muslims)" (Qur'an 33:59) Islam has requirements for modesty in both men and women. Muslim men are required to cover the body between the navel and the knee. Modesty is a virtue which Islam demands of both sex’s. Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that will make for greater purity for them: and Allah is well aware of what they do. Surah al-Nur (24:31) Muslim women who wear hijab do not find it impractical or interfering with their activities. Hijab is not merely a covering dress but more importantly, it is behaviour, manners, speech a appearance in public, there identity, they are saying I am a Muslim who have we got a right to judge what is right or wrong. Many women also do feel by doing this that men will stop treating them like sex objects ignore there appearance and to be attentive to there personalities and minds, take them seriously and treat them as equals and not just want them for bodies or physical looks As I said before i have been to Iran many times, I respect there culture, and there beliefs and i have covered myself up that is how i am Jn2 Peace . Would this mean that Sikhs would be forbidden from wearing a turban headdress in public schools in defiance of their beliefs?
