Hey all, curious how other people are doing with their taxes. We lost 2,000 compared to last year because the deductions were taken away in tRUMP's tax cuts for the rich. I'm in a blue state, California.

How have you been impacted?

Yeah in some cases some will pay more. They doubled the exemption but removed the deductions. So if you have 3 or 4 dependants that are not under 17 the taxes goes up.


Of course, some are just getting less of a refund and confuse that with paying more in taxes.


Some who got less back or paid more may have had a child age out of the child tax credit...


so yes, all other things being equal, some will pay more... but for some of these, it has nothing to do with the Trump tax reform.

Will file soon and let you know - I am not expecting a big return.

But it appears that if you do not have children to deduct you are effed.

Only if you're not rich. If you're rich, it doesn't matter if you have kids or not - your tax bill will be lower.

When you have the same return for 8 years and the 9th year you lose $2,000 that is a MASSIVE CHANGE.

One reason for the different tax returns is that President Trump's tax bill lowered withholding. So you got a bigger paycheck, but you didn't have as much set aside by your employer for taxes.

Most people didn't realize this, and that's what the sticker shock is about for many. But of course for others, they had deductions like state and local taxes taken away.

No matter how you slice it, no one who makes less than $500K a year or so is going to like this new tax structure.

Except the Orange 'n' Chief - he does not pay taxes, how would we know we have not seen his returns

I helped someone do her taxes and she 'lost' about $2000 in a refund over last year but that was due to one of her kids turning 17 so they lost the child tax credit--and had ZERO to do with the Trump law.

So some of the reports have nothing to do with the changes in law.

And yes as I a long time ago...when the law first was passed... that the doubling of the exemptions would not be enough to cover the loss of the deductions and that laws for the child tax credit were more restrictive than for a plain dependant. (like a cousin could be a dependant but not a child unless it was court ordered). So in some cases where one had 3 or more unqualified child dependents, they would very well pay more even at a modest amount of $60,000.

You are correct. Luckily I seen this coming and had extra witholding held out of my check. Good thing I did.

How hard is it to understand that if you don't COLLECT taxes (in this case from the 1%), there is LESS MONEY coming in. Let's just start there. SMDH

and? if you got a pay cut would you not cut back? or would you start spending more? did the pay cut MAKE you spend more?
