Espolòn Celebrates Day of the Dead

...

The actor has received a slew of support from members of the LGBTQ+community in and out of Hollywood, as well as black women alike. But aside from a few Hollywood peers and allies, those same straight black men who are targeted by white supremacists have been largely silent. Their probable homophobic attitudes or silence towards their black gay brothers can be just as lethal as the same white men that kill them and incarcerate them at more disproportionate rates than any other minority in America.

To this day, as a 27-year-old Dominican gay man, I say a prayer when going inside a barbershop because I don’t feel safe. Most black and brown men find the shop as a sacred place of camaraderie with their boys. For me, it’s torture. “Nah he’s a f***ot, he lives up the block,” I heard a Dominican barber say to a black client. They both laughed in unison at a gay man who just left the shop in my neighborhood in the Bronx. I just sat there hoping I wasn’t their next target.

I’ve never felt supported by straight men to safely be my full self in front of them, with the exception of a few who are part of my personal or professional life. (And maybe that’s a problem I need some soul searching on.) What makes it worse is that when given the platform and opportunity to educate themselves on LGBTQ+ people, prominent voices in the media take it as a chance to display their ignorance.

In the summer of 2017, author and trans activist Janet Mock visited Power 105.1 The Breakfast Club to promote her new book, Surpassing Certainty.Days after her appearance, comedian Lil Duval went on the show and was asked what he would do if after four months of dating, a girlfriend disclosed she’s transgender. From here on, things took a turn for the worst. Duval made transphobic comments towards Mock and the community.

Mock detailed the experience in an essay in Allure. “Duval purposefully misgendered me (as the hosts laugh, thereby cosigning) in an attempt to put me in my place and erase my womanhood,” she writes. “Their fragile masculinity would not allow them to recognize a simple truth: I am an accomplished, beautiful black trans woman. Your willful ignorance will not stop me from being exactly who I am.”

Then, of course, there’s the whole Kevin Hart debacle with his homophobic tweets from 2011 and his Oscar hosting gig, but I digress.

What cisgender straight black men need to acknowledge is that in spite of identifying as queer, we’re still black people and our black bodies are just as susceptible to violence and injustice as theirs are. In a 1984 interview with The Village Voice, author James Baldwin succinctly explained this.

“A black gay person who is a sexual conundrum to society is already, long before the question of sexuality comes into it, menaced and marked because he’s black or she’s black,” Baldwin said. “The sexual question comes after the question of color; it’s simply one more aspect of the danger in which all black people live.”

On the opposite side of that, many in the black community have spoken out on the attack by only highlighting the racial aspect of it, and ignoring Jussie’s gay identity. Prominent film producer and activist Tariq Nasheed blatantly refuses to acknowledge the intersectionality that comes with being a gay black man. A gay black man doesn’t have the privilege to pick and choose which marginalized identity he wears in society on any given day when he can be attacked for either of them.

Instead, he just denounces the white LGBT community for supporting Jussie but allegedly taking advantage of the situation and using their queerness as mechanism to manipulate identity politics to their favor.

With that being said, you can’t support the black and brown LGBTQ+ community if you’re not going to acknowledge the intersections between their race and their queer identities. That’s like concealing the issue with a tone deaf “all lives matter” slogan, which puts a bandaid on the identity you choose not to recognize.

I don’t care how historically homophobic black culture can be. That will never be a valid excuse for one’s silence or ignorance. In Hollywood, music, politics and sports, there are tons of black men with influence who choose to turn a blind eye or “mind their business,” and it’s not helping anyone.

Yet the silence that’s more weaponized comes from black men in our own communities. Usually when something happens to a cisgender black man that can take or has taken away his life, the community is in uproar. But when it comes to queer folks, the protests aren’t as loud. And for black transgender women, who suffer the most from ... violence among the community, they are met with silence.

New details in Jussie Smollett attack: Actor wearing 'rope like a neck tie': Police
By Stephanie Wash and Michael Rothman
Jan 31, 2019, 1:01 PM ET

“New details are emerging in the alleged attack and possible hate crime against "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett.

A dozen detectives are pursuing new leads and have tracked the actor's movements that night through video and photos, Chicago Police tell ABC News.

They say video shows Smollett walking across the street from two possible persons of interest, whose photos were released late Wednesday to the public. In the video, Smollett walks out of frame for about a minute and reappears on another camera "wearing a rope like a neck tie," police said.

Police are still hoping to speak to the two men seen in the video about the alleged attack.

"Photos of people of interest who were in area of the alleged assault & battery of Empire cast member. While video does not capture an encounter, detectives are taking this development seriously & wish to question individuals as more cameras are being reviewed," Chicago Police tweeted late yesterday.

As of Thursday morning, the press office for the Chicago Police Department told ABC News there haven't been any new developments.

President Trump called the attack "horrible" while discussing a wide range of issues Thursday afternoon.

"Doesn't get worse, as far as I'm concerned," he said.

The "Empire" star told police the alleged attack happened Tuesday about 2 a.m. The 36-year-old actor was subsequently hospitalized and released, local authorities said.

Smollett has been cooperating with local authorities to find the men he says allegedly attacked him and shouted racial and homophobic slurs, police said.

Smollett has declined to hand over his cell phone to detectives, police added.

Smollett told police that the men also allegedly poured "an unknown chemical substance" on him, possibly bleach, and wrapped a rope around his neck, as shown in the new video. The rope was still around Smollett's neck when police spoke to him, officials said.

Brandon Z. Moore, Smollett's music manager, told ABC News he was on the phone with the actor when he heard part of the alleged attack. He also heard the words "MAGA country," presumably from the alleged attackers, he added.

"I heard that clearly," he told ABC News. "I heard the scuffle and I heard the racial slur."

Police confirmed they have spoken to Moore and his account is noted in the police report. Moore and Smollett both said they were on the phone with each other at the time of the attack, police added.

Detectives have not yet seen phone records to confirm their accounts, police said.

In an interview with "Good Morning America" on Wednesday, "Empire" co-star Terrence Howard said a production manager notified the cast about the attack in a meeting on set Tuesday.

The actor said Fox boosted security on set in the wake of the incident and offered each cast member 24-hour personal security.

The college had raised $3.2 million as of Wednesday, including $500,000 from Papa John’s Foundation and $500,000 from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, Dawkins said.

Individual churches were dropping off checks of as much as $50,000, and Alpha Kappa Alpha, an African American sorority, sent $100,000. Wells Fargo Bank donated $50,000. Other historically black colleges had challenged students to give $1 apiece, and Guilford County schools’ teachers collected more than $8,000.

So many questions:

The attack had to be well planned, and they must have had some connection from another source to know he would be in Chicago.

We know a few days earlier he received threatening letters, one with white powder that turned out to be aspirin, according to investigators.

What’s strange is, according to reports, the attackers were equipped and ready with bleach and a rope at 2 am in the morning.

How did they know he would leave the hotel at all that night? Were they just waiting for him to leave the hotel?

When he tweeted from his plane, that he was on his way to Chicago, could that be how his attackers knew he would be in Chicago? They may have been followers of his tweets.

Did he tweet what hotel he was at that day? Did he tweet he would be leaving the hotel to get food? Could that be how his attackers knew he would leave the hotel, and waited to attack him?

Did they stake out exactly what area they wanted to do the attack, by knowing where they attacked him, there would be no cameras to record the attack?

Who knows, but it will be interesting if the investigators find his attackers, and we find out how his attackers were able to pull this off.

Jussie lives in The grand luxury high rise apartment building in Chicago where the hit show “Empire” is filmed. It’s not really hard to figure that out.

This is part of the reason the story didn't add up. The narrative that there happened to be two white guys randomly attacking a black guy street with the bleach and a rope was odd.

If they were stalkers none of it would make logical sense anyway. It was a little dangerous for him after not accepting extra security to tweet and use social media and make whereabouts know so much but that is what his generation does, so I don't know? He could have a habit of going out at night and if he tweeted or Instagrammed everything stalkers could wait. Give it time and if they never catch anyone can have conspiracy theories but I would believe it was a stalker. Doesn't make sense but stalkers are deranged and it does not have to make sense. Could be a hoax or a publicity stunt but too early to tell. Lots of other things didn't add up. Like if my friend is attacked and I hear about it on the phone I surely would call 9-11, surely!, and at least tell them my buddy was attacked on route to Subway from his apartment. If I got attacked like that too I'd contact police ASAP and have them trying to find the guys that attacked me, why give your attacker a pass but could be he was so fearful he was just trying to make it to hospital. If someone attacked Jussie I hope they are brought to justice and face the highest penalty, it doesn't have to make logical sense if it was a stalker.

Jussie Smollett Breaks His Silence After Vicious Attack: 'I'm OK

CORI MURRAY
FEB, 01, 2019 3:03 PM UTC

“Jussie Smollett is finally speaking out after the homophobic and racist attack he endured earlier this week.

The Empire star and LGBTQ+ activist was beaten by two men early Tuesday morning in Chicago, police said in statement, just after leaving a Subway restaurant. Police added that a noose was found around the actor’s neck. Smollett was able to transport himself to the hospital after suffering injuries.

In an exclusive statement addressed to the “beautiful people,” Smollett not only assured fans that he’s recovering, but that he’s thankful for the mass outpouring of support he’s received over the last few days.

Let me start by saying that I’m OK,” Smollett began in his statement to ESSENCE. “My body is strong but my soul is stronger. More importantly I want to say thank you. The outpouring of love and support from my village has meant more than I will ever be able to truly put into words. ”

In his statement, Smollett also addressed the misinformation that has been circulating about the incident, and dispelling rumors on social media that his story changed.

Smollett said, “I am working with authorities and have been 100% factual and consistent on every level. Despite my frustrations and deep concern with certain inaccuracies and misrepresentations that have been spread, I still believe that justice will be served. ”

“As my family stated, these types of cowardly attacks are happening to my sisters, brothers and non-gender conforming siblings daily. I am not and should not be looked upon as an isolated incident. We will talk soon and I will address all details of this horrific incident, but I need a moment to process,” he concluded. “Most importantly, during times of trauma, grief and pain, there is still a responsibility to lead with love. It’s all I know. And that can’t be kicked out of me.”

Smollett signed his statement by writing, “With Love, respect & honor…Jussie.”

Good for him! Poor kid, must have been so terrifying. The thought of someone putting a rope around your neck...shudder.

So many questions: The attack had to be well planned, and they must have had some connection from another source to know he would be in Chicago. [Edited 2/1/19 6:15am]

So you don't think it was just random.?

So he says that he was on the phone with his manager at the time of the attack, then why didn’t his manager call 911???? If I'm looking at this incident as an elaborate hoax I would question that angle but probably some MAGA guys walking the streets of Chitown at 2am did it.

I wish I could begin to convey to you how ignorant, stupid and downright offensive comments like this are. Maybe when I have more time I will, but trust me,it was a dumbass comment to make.

Not surprised at that comment.

I just posted an article where Jussie made a recent statement about the incident, and had stated he is working with investigators, that he will give further details sbout the incident, at a later date.

This is just a bit of his statement:

Thanks for more info.

This is part of the reason the story didn't add up. The narrative that there happened to be two white guys randomly attacking a black guy street with the bleach and a rope was odd.

Police confirmed they did find a rope on his neck and a liquid was on his skin, that was later confirmed as ‘bleach. So that part has been confirmed by investigators. Jussie also confirmed during the 2nd police interview, and so did his friend who was on the phone with him, when the attack happened, that both said the attackers said “This is MAGA country.”

Here’s a portion of another article:

Empire’ actor Jussie Smollett breaks silence about Chicago attack
WGN Web Desk

(Edited for compliance)

“...Surveillance video showed Smollett with a rope as he returned home, but there is no video of an attack.

Smollett did not want to turn over his cell phone to police, but his representative tells TMZ, they are gathering his phone records to turn over to authorities.

Smollett and his manager say they were on the phone together when the attack happened.

"He's been very cooperative with us and I don't see any reason why he wouldn't be cooperative. We are making some gains in the investigation and we'll continue to investigate it," Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson told WGN Friday.”

I hope they are able to get to the bottom of this attack soon.
