I'm sorry but Serena Williams is not a victim.

I have always had a sex thing with Serena but she is in the wrong with her childish tirade. It was not sexist it was just. She broke her racket, called the ref names. She was being a baby and what happened was deserved. Don't forget the other player was a woman of color.

The cartoon, on the other hand was racist bs. Serena, retire and let someone else win.

For someone who likes to shame people for bringing up stories that "don't matter", you've picked a winner. lol

How about this: who gives a shit about Serena, tennis or the stupid political cartoon? It's all nonsense.

Meanwhile a man ranting his hate for the trumpclown attacks a republican candidate with a knife and CNN ignores it. They must have been too busy fussing about the Serena controversy or snitching on Alex Jones for mocking them.

I found her behaviour appalling, and I think the cartoon was funny and on point.

The only theft that occured was recognition that NAOMI OSAKA won and won convincingly and with class and honour. The tantrum by the other player is true to her form when she gets frustrated by losing. The penalties only shortened the match, the result would almost certainly have been the same.

.

Proposed rule change - rather than just a racket abuse penalty - you can only change a racket if you break it in play. Break it as it was broken and you must play on with it or concede.

.

PS the cartoon is racist - even against Naomi - She is drawn as a faceless, white blond. The cartoon could have made its point if the other player was drawn as a sulking baby throwing a tantrum.

She broke the rules and was penalised for it. Considering her status in the game, she should have known better. Throwing around accusations of sexism only serves (no pun intended) to undermine the impact of actual sexism.

At least she showed her opponent some love after the game. After all, she had a lot of "love" to go around (pun very much intended).

Yep. Totally agree. I feel bad for Naomi because Serena's dummy spit is getting more attention.

.

.

I'd love to see that! Perhaps more realistic - throwing your racket to the ground in anger becomes an automatic point to the opposing player. No warnings.

.

PS the cartoon is racist - even against Naomi - She is drawn as a faceless, white blond. The cartoon could have made its point if the other player was drawn as a sulking baby throwing a tantrum.

.

Naomi is not drawn "faceless". The artist captures her mannerisms well. Her hair is blonde because she had blonde hair during the match. And nor is she depicted "white". Her tone is clearly drawn darker than that of the white chair umpire. Serena is drawn "as a sulking baby throwing a tantrum", hence the pacifier and the jumping up and down tantrum pose and whinging face.

That is not quite true: Others have been docked but not all by as much. This is merely inconsistency in the application of rules AFTER the player has broken the rules. John McEnroe was not merely docked a game but was, at one time, disqualified and immediately ejected from a tournament for abusing an umpire.

.

It is also not a good defence:

- Her coach agreed he was breaking the rules by coaching her during a game.

- It is absolutely well known and common for people to be warned and docked for by racket abuse, and

- Her increasing outburst was mainly as a result of frustration at being beaten.

.

And, yes, the cartoon was racist.

That something reminds you of something racist from way back does not mean it is racist. All three characters in the scene have exaggerated features. Naomi has a tiny mouth, the chair umpire has unrealistically skinny legs and a pointed nose, etc. Serena has big lips because she has big lips in real life, just as Osaka has a small mouth and the chair umpire is skinny in real life. Cartoonists regularly exaggerate the physical features of the people they're depicting. Serena is (fairly) being depicted as a whinging spoiled brat, and the depiction of her lips also help create that caracture.

Outside of the audience of the Herald Sun, Daily Telegraph and Courier Mail audience - All News Corp mastheads, therefore associated with Fox News, you may have accept that others are not convinced by your arguments - because the cartoon is racist.

No, in regards to media outlets, by its history of racist content. Here the Herald Sun, Daily Telegraph and Courier Mail et al pander to their market and are looked upon with shame by other Australians.

You're not actually addressing how the cartoon is racist, Ian. Instead, you're going for guilt by association. Get back to me when you have a rebuttal of substance.

Did Ms. Williams say she was a "victim"? confused What she did say was their was a double standard on penalizing women and man in tennis. Let me be clear, its unfortunate that Williams was unable to keep her composure and it was clear to me she wasn't going to win the finals of U.S Open. Ms. Naomi Osaka had Ms. Williams on the ropes from game one.

Be that as it may...

There's a double standard. This isn't the first time U.S. open officials were swift, very swift penalize Ms. Williams when she opnsd up her mouth about a call. In fact there's been 3 other situations at the Open... the last was eight years ago were the ump penalized Williams game set and match.

I use to go to all of the French, Wimbledon, and the U.S Open between 1976 and 2003. I've seen men on the tennis circuit cuss out ump's, line-persons, and supervisors. Don't talk about destroying tennis rackets, over throwing chairs, hitting balls in the stands, cussing themselves out when they were losing, and talking shit after a match to the ump. The first assholes of tennis were Ille Nastase, a.k.a, Nasty Natase", Mike Connors, John McEnroe; in my humble opinion nobody was worse than Natase. I don't recall ever seeing McEnroe in a tournament were he didn't have a temper tantrum, melt dow,n or whatever. At 1st the Tennis Ass. attempted to break McEnore, until Tennis Ass. realize John was putting asses in the seats and TV ratings for the tennis jumped up. Then Tennis Ass. allowed Mac to act an ass. I heard and saw McEnore call a linesman "boy" at the TPA championships, nothing happen. After McEnore, the conduct rules of behavior became lax. Facts.

In fact I don't know a professional sport were the umps don't give players a little break when its a championship.

She’s got it backwards. She thinks men are allowed to act like more of a brat than the brat she acted like. If there’s a problem with men players acting excessively bratty, then that needs to be addressed. Allowing and encouraging the women players to misbehave more is not the way to address anything.
