Obama and Michelle's official WH portraits

As someone who has always been involved in the arts and as a designer, and especially after the god awful tacky trump 'Freedom" coins, these are very refreshing. A modern take on stuffy portraits.
I think i especially love Michelle's

I'm not a huge fan of Michelle's portrait. It doesn't look like her. Her face is too full, it looks bloated or swollen. And she's ashy as fuck. Love the dress, though. I love the artist who did Barry's, though. He's very talented and his style is precise.

But there many fun pokes at either painting, this is one of my favorites:

Odd paintings. lol. Michelle did not look happy with it, no matter what she said. The Obama one is weird. Odd that I'm even posting on such a sad day.

She's ashy as fuck? That's supposed to be a joke, right? You know the painting is a play on a black & white photograph?

I think I read in an interview where the artist that did Michelle's painting is known to use greys to indicate people of color, with an idea to exclude color as a race.

At the unveiling she said about the dress:

But at the lectern, introducing the six-by-five-foot “ ‘Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama,’ oil on linen, 2018,” Sherald said that the shapes reminded her of Mondrian, and the diligent quilt-making of the black women artisans of Gee’s Bend, Alabama.

About skin tone:

The racializing schema of Sherald’s work is to “exclude the idea of color as race,” she has said, in her artist’s statement. To Sherald, the photorealistic depiction of race—a quality determined by others’ eyes, externally—is a dead end. Applied to Michelle Obama, the lack of brown in the skin feels first like a loss, and then like a real gain.

Yes it was a joke, but I also think the greyscale choice wasn't a good one. Beyond that, it just doesn't really look like her. To me, that's the bigger nag I have with it.

Ok. cool It is a very different kind of portrait. Possible it looks better in person as many paintings do. The blue background makes the gray tone skin appear even cooler, unlike the way a strictly b/w photo realism piece would look.

The gray is symbolism.

I get that. Doesn't mean we can't discuss it as a painting too. I am a lonely painter, I live in a box of paints.

I heard her explain the symbolism of painting gray skin tones. It has to do with early daquerreotypes of slaves. She is a fascinating person.

I think they're awesome. I think they will be the ones that get the most attention during tours and stand the test of time as something unique and interesting vs the regular portraits. Kudos to the artist and whomever had the balls to go with it.

Just FYI these are NOT official WH portraits, they are for the National Gallery. That being said I think they both rock.
