Charles Murray's "Bubble Quiz"

Meghan McCain referenced this on "The View" today, and I read it last year. It's a quiz to see if you live in a "bubble" that supposedly seperates you from the lives of "real Americans"...

http://www.pbs.org/newsho...-a-quiz-2/

My issue with this is that it assumes that Middle American White culture is the only true "American" culture. Why is knowing a NASCAR driver more American than knowing who Thurgood Marshall or Lou Reed was ? Why is watching mass market hit shows more American than watching "Mad Men" or "The Wire" or "Broad City" ? Why is seeing blockbuster hit movies more American than watching Woody Allen or Martin Scorsese or Quentin Tarantino or Richard Linklater films ? Why is listening to Country music more American than Prince or Aretha or Santana or Leonard Bernstein or Charlie Parker or Nas ? And don't those who score high on this test exist in a "bubble" in relation to MY culture and experiences ??

You got 52 points.

The higher your score, the thinner your bubble. The lower, the more insulated you might be from mainstream American culture.

See below for scores Charles Murray would expect you to get based on the following descriptions.

48–99: A lifelong resident of a working-class neighborhood with average television and movie going habits. Typical: 77.

Take the test Only. I think we know the answer. I'm about as bubbleless as they get.

I just have issues with the entire premise that they are starting from - which is that Midwestern/Southern White culture is the authentic "American culture", and if you are not a participant in that world , you are in some out of touch "bubble ".

i am confused as to how each answer is related to being or not being in the bubble... like fishing... how it that a bubble issue? people of all walks fish... or the ones about the military? there are many poor and few have a degree and many are minorities. So how does that affect the scores?

I had it good as a kid but I have lived in some very low-income areas.

and I would say if you can understand the 25 questions you are a little in the bubble....some had double negatives and you would need better than a high school education to really get them.

That's pretty much my point- it is full of assumptions of how some people live or were raised
