Skirmishes erupt in Charlottesville ahead of 'Unite the Right' rally

Updated 11:46 AM ET, Sat August 12, 2017
Charlottesville, Virginia (CNN)Demonstrators clashed Saturday on the streets of Charlottesville ahead of a "Unite the Right" rally as white nationalists and other right-wing groups -- and counter-protesters -- converged in this college town in the latest flare-up of a running nation debate over the country's identity.

Fist fights and screaming matches erupted before the rally, which police expect to attract thousands of people. The skirmishes unfolded just hours after a scuffle Friday night between torch-bearing demonstrators and counter-protesters at the nearby University of Virginia.

Saturday's rally is the latest event drawing white nationalists and right-wing activists from across the country to this Democratic-voting college town -- a development first precipitated by the city's decision to remove symbols of its Confederate past.

Though the rally is scheduled for noon ET, hundreds had gathered by mid-morning on Charlottesville's streets and at a city park.
Shortly before noon, city officials signaled they might move to break it up, declaring it an "unlawful assembly" on Twitter. A local emergency also was declared.
At one point, a few dozen white men wearing helmets and holding makeshift shields chanted, "Blood and soil!" Nearby, a group of clergy and other counter-demonstrators, including activist and Harvard professor Cornel West, held hands, prayed and sang. "This Little Light of Mine."
Police presence was heavy on this overcast day, with more than 1,000 officers expected to be deployed, city officials.

They had to call the national guard. Still no response from trump. A number of repub and dem officials are blaming the trump administration, including Bannon, for this type of atmosphere and division.

Charlottesville City Council recently voted to remove Confederate statues. The kkk et al staged a protest and were outnumbered by a counter protest including little old ladies of all colors. Backlash?

Yep, and the white nationalists were throwing bottles of police.

How is it that Melania sent out a tweet and not her husband?? What a crock of bull. All of a sudden he isn't tweeting?

This proves he is no leader for 'all' Americans. Some repubs and dems and members of trump admin, are calling for the firing of Bannon. He should have never been part of that administration period.

Watching this riot and fighting on tv reminds me of the 1960s race riots. Trumps presidency has made these racists feel it's okay to be racist and spread hate. I heard the riot began when they began chanting racist hate speech. The thing I don't understand about whites racists is that they claim they are not racist and they just have "white pride" whatever that means but why go chanting hate speech then? racists are idiots.

^^Trump is busy dealing with North Korea.

I don't mind a rally or demonstration but when protesters block roadways and disrupt businesses and are violent it should be ended and sounds like the cops ended it.

I AGREE 100%

That is why the whole immigration here in the states is such a big issue because in another 10 years whites will no longer be the majority. That whole Raise Act legislation is all apart of that agenda to keep this from happening. They are waiting for Trump to respond but he doesn't care about these issues because he is racist himself.

They had to bring the national guard out and the governor issued a state of emergency. There is no excuse he should make a statement but I don't expect him too because he is a bigot and doesn't care about race issues. I don't expect a president who calls hispanics rapists to say anything about white supremacists giving hate speeches.

State of emergency as white nationalist rally in Charlottesville turns violent

1:22 PM EDT U.S.
CBS NEWS

White nationalists clashed with counter-protesters before police moved in and intervened at a demonstration in downtown Charlottesville, Virginia, protesting the city's decision to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee from the city's Emancipation Park.

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency in the city to aid in the local response. He blamed "mostly out-of-state protesters" for the violence and clashes.

"I am disgusted by the hatred, bigotry and violence these protesters have brought to our state over the past 24 hours," McAuliffe said in a statement. He said state troopers and the Virginia National Guard were providing support to local authorities.

In a tweet, President Trump said Americans must "condemn all that hate stands for," saying "there is no place for violence in America."

Latinos will be the new majority (Latinos-Whites-followed by Blacks and Asians) but yes it is an issue and documenting workers and people within the population is not just a good idea it will eventually have to be done. Border control will be even more important with nukes.

Brown is Brown dude. Latinos/Hispanics will be the majority. Fact is, white nationalists fear that. Border control will not stop this country from turning Brown.

Obama did not fan the the flames. He spoke on the fact that racism still exists. Now did he lie? That's fanning flames about an ugly truth white nationalists try to deny, and yet they are on the forefront promoting hate and racial prejudice? Trump has a known racist on his staff. Even some repubs are admitting the truth about Bannon, and want him out, and blaming him for the rise in white nationalists coming out of the woodwork. Trump fanned the flames during his campaign, with his divisive and hate rhetoric. You can deny it all you want.

Obama didn't fan any flames. He was neutral and was pro law enforcement in race vs police relations which really pissed me off during his presidency. As a Black president, he could have advocated more on Black issues and police brutality is definitely one of them.

I can't say too much about race relations in th US, but I find the whole issue about the statue interesting. We have a similar issue in Holland.
Jan Pieterszoon Coen was the governor of the Dutch East India Company in the 17th century. The company was after the monopoly of the nutmeg trade in the Banda Islands in present day Indonesia, the only place where the nutmeg trees grew. Coen had thousands of people killed to establish the monopoly and laid the foundation of the Dutch colonial empire in Indonesia.
He has a statue in his hometown of Hoorn and every so often, you hear about people (usually left wingers) who want it removed and others (usually right wingers) who want to keep it. Even though I usually side with the left, I'd say, keep those statues. If only as a reminder. Whether we like it or not, people like Lee and Coen are part of history and I don't think we should remove all controversial figures from public view and only see history with our own 21st century eyes.
But... over here, no one is rioting about it, so in Charlotteville, there must be more to it than just a statue...
Don't ever lose your dreams.

It seems like factions of groups are starting to organize by social media and we see more of this violence. I think the President has to be careful how they address the situations. It is complex with ANTIFA and possibly other groups involved. Outside groups were sent into BLM too and we addressed it here in PR.

Calling for Peace and condemning Hate and Violence is good start but not getting into the specific or getting involved when State gov should handle issue. When a riot is starting to breakout all through a city (Baltimore) it is not good to make a blanket statement that group has a reason. It sends the wrong message instead calling for Peace is smart.
