762 Murders in Chicago in 2016

I don't know how to comment on this. This makes me so sad and angry.

762 murders. 12 months. 1 American city.

By Amanda Wills, Sergio Hernandez and Marlena Baldacci, CNN

"All these people getting killed, I feel sad. I feel scared. I don't want to be shot."

170102112427-chicago-murder-1-super-169.jpg

There were 762 murders in Chicago in 2016. It was the deadliest year in nearly two decades.
Here's how we got to this point, what it means for the city and those whose lives have been changed forever.

WHAT 762 MEANS

The number alone doesn't tell the entire story of Chicago's bloodshed. There's another statistic that points to a disturbing trend the city is facing: a surge.
There was more than a 50% increase in murders in just one year. Chicago hit 500 homicides before the end of the summer in 2016. In 2015, the city had less than 500 homicides total.
Five police districts on the south and west sides of the city accounted for nearly two-thirds of the increase in murders, according to Chicago police.
The day-to-day breakdown of those figures is alarming. For example, there were 12 murders on Father's Day weekend alone. The youngest victim was just 16.
And crime didn't subside over the holidays. On Christmas weekend, 12 people were killed, and police investigated 27 shootings.

CHICAGO VS. OTHER CITIES

When you compare Chicago's murder rate to that of other big cities in the country -- New York and Los Angeles, for example -- it tops the list.

On New Year's Eve, people carried nearly 800 wooden crosses bearing the names of those killed in Chicago in 2016.

They need to do something about gun control in this country. Too easy for youth to get their hands on guns from those selling it underground. Get the elected officials out of office, who are not working hard enough to change the situation and implement measures to reduce the flow of guns getting into the hands of youth, and put more effort in finding out whose selling them to gangs and other youth in lower-income communities.

And even though Chicago has the most murders of any city in the country, it comes in at number five of the list of homicides per 100,000 people.
Number 4 on that list: Sin City, Las Vegas, Nevada.
Number 3: Washington, D.C., and what's troubling is the murder rate jumped 51 percent in a year.
Number 2: Detroit, Michigan, the good news here: the number of murders were down year to year.
The new Number 1 city, overtaking Detroit as the place with the highest murder rate in the country: Baltimore, Maryland, with homicides up 63 percent.

Riding the metro train into Chicago it feels like a 3rd world country in places. Much of the infrstructure needs rebuilding so Trump can create jobs and put people to work. Hope also that Obama can help out(Jimmy Carter like) with Chicago.

"Concentrated poverty" is what big government wants. Blacks in Africa seemed figured it out on there own?

Chicago has tough gun laws. Are you for outlawing guns from the whole country? If so, how do we stop the guns coming in from Canada and Mexico.

Chicago has been democratic blue for generations. Barry's Rom has been running same fed liberal con. Holding video of cops killing black teenager until after he's re elected sad

Kind of like the "spontaneous riot" in Lybia incited by a youtube video on 9/11.

'Ferguson effect': 72% of U.S. cops reluctant to make stops

.

.

.

.

The survey — conducted between May 19 and Aug. 14 with officers at 54 departments — comes on the heels of a year when several big cities — including Chicago, Indianapolis, Memphis, and San Antonio — dealt with surges in murder rates. In the midst of last year’s spike, FBI Director James Comey suggested an increase in violent crime in some cities may be a result of a less-aggressive law enforcement approach in the face of increased public scrutiny.

Former Chicago police superintendent Garry McCarthy recently tied the surge in violence in the nation’s third largest city — which tallied 762 murders and more than 4,300 shooting victims in 2016 — to a decline in street stops by cops. McCarthy was fired from his post in December 2015 after the court-ordered release of a video that showed a white police officer firing 16 shots at 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.

That incident, which ignited public backlash, also spurred a Justice Department civil rights investigation of Chicago Police Department’s patterns and practices. The DOJ is expected to issue its findings on its Chicago investigation in the coming days.

In an op-ed in the Chicago Sun-Times published Wednesday, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said it was crucial that the city have an “engaged, proactive police department” as the city tries to stem the violence that has disproportionately impacted a few low-income, predominantly African-American and Latino neighborhoods.

“If the reforms we must, and will, make are seen as demonizing the police, the police will naturally become reactive,” Emanuel wrote in anticipation of the Justice report. “They’re only human. The clarity, certainty and standards they need to do their jobs will be lost, and the result will be more violence. That is not a recipe for success in our communities. The only winners in that case are the gangbangers and drug dealers.”

To say he hasnt done as much as Jimmy (Carter?) is one thing...to say that he doesnt have heart and humility, and that he's out for himself...I see nothing from the past 8 years that would lead you to feel that way.
