Why do white folks love pick-up trucks? I used to work with this colleague named Bob from South Carolina, and while he would drive around in his BMW in Germany, he kept reminiscing about his "baby", a term he would constantly use for his 1998 Ford pick-up truck. Now I´ve noticed that many white folks just love Ford pick-up trucks. Is it a cultural thing? I often see it in American movies, too. Especially those with a storyline in some desert or some humid region. But sometimes I also see pick-up trucks in movies that take place in some colder climates, too. I mean, is the maintenance easier, or is it the look? Are they easier to drive than, say, 1964 Impalas? Or an Oldsmobile? What´s this strange fascination that white America has with pick-up trucks?
Is it just a summer vehicle or is it also very popular in the winter season? Is it just me or are pick up drivers very religious, too? Just curious. I stopped working with Bob years ago so I can´t ask him.

lol. Those pictures...
I guess the trucks facilitate their blue collar lifestyle. The beds are good for holding tools and dirtbikes and hoardes of hispanic day workers.
I especially like it when these trucks have confederate flag bumper stickers or decals on them. AMERICA, FUCK YEAH.

like Newt Gingrich said recently, you can't put a gun rack in a Chevy Volt
mostly these cars are for men who have small penis syndrome

Sooo...does that mean that Chevy Volt drivers have a big penis?

Don't forget the white collar equivalent - the 4x4 with ultra low profile tyres that struggled with high gutters let alone anything approaching off-road.

Some recent research suggests that it's not so much that they're more likely to be pick-up truck owners, but that they more readily self-identify as pick-up truck owners in their responses to survey questions. Scientists say that more clipboards are needed to determine the true extent of pick-up truck ownership in the white community, though. Trucks are utility vehicles. You will not see white-collar folks driving them much becasue they are not the ones using them. Hispanics love them almost as much, anyone who uses them for work or pleasure have an affinity for them.
I loved my Fords. | |

I think (hope) that is the point. I took this as a silly thread as a counter to all the heat on other race based generalisation threads here

The saddest thing is when disputes over pick-up truck ownership result in white-on-white violence. "If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." - Malcolm X

I second that. It's hilarious. Especially the pic with the toy truck in the tree, and the one with the self-made pool in back of the truck. [Edited 2/28/12 21:11pm]

As far back as I can remember, pickup trucks were a redneck thing. Not just blue collar workers using them for work purposes but when I saw pickup trucks, they seemed to reflect the rednecks' personal style with big ass Confederate flags painted on the hoods or in the back window, Confederate flag bumper stickers, bumper stickers with racist slogans on them, bumper stickers with Republican political candidates on them, spotlights on top of the roof of the truck, big ass tires on the trucks that were taller than the trucks themselves, four tires in the back, etc. and all kinds of things like that. Many were made up to look very intimidating and when I'd see them coming, it would give me a feeling of kinda like seeing the Ku Klux Klan approaching on one of their hate rides. Oh honey, them rednecks love those pickup trucks. To me, it looked like pickup trucks were their modern 20th and 21st century "horses" for modern day John Wayne wannabes and "cowboys". When I see them, I automatically get visions of black lynchings and gay draggings because Lord knows I've seen enough racist and homophobic rednecks a'hoopin' and a'hollerin' and shouting out hate slurs from those trucks.
Then, in the late 1980s, I started seeing more and more miniature pickup trucks like Toyotas and Datsuns popping up and a lot of these were driven by white men who weren't rednecks but rather Southern white men. Shortly after that, I started seeing white women driving them. They weren't rednecks but to me, it just looked "Southern". Then as shit hop emerged, I started seeing young black guys driving these smaller pickup trucks but they would take them and paint them wild colors or putting rims and things on them. Lord have mercy, I had seen it all one day back in around 1989 when I saw what looked to be a Cadillac El Camino coming down the road. Some young black guy had taken a damn hearst and taken the top off the back and was driving it around like it was a Cadillac pickup truck.
Around the 1990s and 2000s, then I started seeing all kinds of variations of trucks such as jeeps, broncos, SUVs, minivans, etc. driven by people of all walks of life from black, white, rich, poor, middle class, etc. Back in the day, I rarely saw a black person drive a truck of any kind unless they did yard work or something but other than that, black folks in my area were driving the sharpest rides on the road such as Cadillacs, Lincolns, etc. if they could afford them, or just a sharp normal "car" but never a truck of any kind. I mean, trucks back in the day were known as a redneck mobile. Everybody these days drives all kinds of trucks but not me. I will never drive a truck of any kind or variation because I just can't get that redneck image from back in the day out of my head and I've had some of the worst slurs of my entire life shouted at me from passing pickup trucks and it's just something I can't forget. Andy is a four letter word.

Laughing @ bolded part. I noticed in the early 2000s, some folks in the North, started driving pickup trucks. My brother-in-law bought one early last year. I'm so used to seeing those trucks in the south, but to each their own.
I feel for you though, and your personal experience of having to carry some of those awful memories over the years. Thanks for sharing. [Edited 3/1/12 9:37am]

Vainandy is right...in the south when I was young in Georgia, we would call them "Redneck Horses"...lol
The pics are hilarious and that racist Islam pic is unfortunately too common Some people puts all of their racism on the back of their trucks...smh [Edited 3/1/12 8:24am]
