What Does Saying R.I.P. Really Imply?

If you are atheist- do believe that a soul won't rest in peace after death? If you don't believe Satan exists would you say R.I.P.? If you don't believe in hell fire do you say R.I.P.? Or is it that the soul will not be at peace in the next life?

Does it imply that once you are dead you still have not paid the wages of your sins? Does it imply that the person led a sinful life?

wave If you have to do something kicking and screaming and tearing down others with your "self love" words- maybe you shouldn't be doing it in the first place.

I don't believe in hell and I say R.I.P. I think R.I.P. is a nice way to express some measure of comfort to the still living while honoring the deceased. To me, the worst thing you can do in the wake of someone's death is put too much emphasis on your beliefs...why should the grieving family and friends have to care what you believe about the afterlife? "Rest in peace" seems like a very nice way to express your care and affection without getting into anything else.

That said, I don't really get your question. I would think R.I.P. would be a weird thing for someone who's religious to say, since they believe that there is an eternity of some kind of activity to come.

believing in an after life is not the same a believing in God. People believe in ghosts that do not believe in God.

i'm not religious and i say it. i say 'bless you' when people sneeze, too. i never put any thought into it, it's just something to say.

Good question. I suppose it refers to the body lying in state. I've always felt we are our souls, not our bodies, and when our body dies, our souls go to Heaven. I'm not one for going to cemeteries to pray over graves. I don't think anyone's there.

And for those in Heaven, I don't think of that as "rest". So I'm not really one for saying "RIP" or "Rest in Peace" although I understand the thought behind it is one of love.

there is also the idea of reincarnation. Some think that when you die part of you lives on. That part may have a period of time in some other state before it is ready to go to the next stage. That next stage could be any number of things.

I would assume that to some RIP is a way of saying: "i hope your transition goes smoothly and that you move on to the next level soon and without any problems."

Now for the believer, it may go back to what the bible really says about what happens when you die. In the Bible it doesn't say you go to heaven. It says you 'sleep.' So may just be a way of acknowledging that death is not permanent that is like going to bed, when someone might say 'good night' or 'sweet dreams'

I’d say nothingness is pretty peaceful.
So, as an atheist, I’d say once you die you have achieved the ultimate peace. Since you no longer exist and all.

I’m not sure I understand what peace has to do with satan or sin or any of that. But then I probably wouldn’t, as an atheist.

Although… you’re not around to experience that peace… hmmm

I never really thought about it till now. lol

So I guess we’re back to, it’s a nice thing to say when someone dies.

Or maybe it just acknowledges that their suffering on earth has ended.

Rest in Peace

for me ... has zero to do with the christian devil/satan/god/heaven

It mean rest ( death ) in peace ...

ya know ... most our human exsistance/experience on mother earth can be far from peaceful

and if a death is brought about by somthing non peaceful like cancer - or other very non peaceful experience we can have in dying then ...

RIP rose

It simple means the nonsense u went thru in this existence is over and hopefully where ever u go, u can rest and leave this thing called life behind.

If I knew where COVER was, I'd stay there........and there would be no NEED 2 run 4 it.

Its just a culturally acceptable phrase; a neutral way of showing sympathy.

As for "If you are atheist- do believe that a soul won't rest in peace after death?" An aetheist doesn't believe in souls, so its a moot question.

Or maybe it is something we say to make ourselves feel better?

I was listing to a woman talk about a child she knew that died. She was saying how it was 'her time' and that 'god called her home.' I was thinking, whatever makes you feel better, but that is not what the Bible says. I think we try to comfort ourselves by saying things like that. We want to believe that they are okay. So we have these things we say that are said as if they are for the dead but for some of us they are just things that make us feel better.

I guess if a person was a true Devil Worshiper then saying something like "rot in hell" would have the same meaning.

I guess when one sneezes saying 'bless you' would be offensive.

Well stated. This pretty much characterizes my thoughts.

I would say RIP for the same reason I would say Bless You when someone sneezes. The superstitious origins of it have been replaced by cultural ones, and statements such as these are meant to signify support given to others.

I'm pretty sure it was the South Park movie... but I'd have to filter through all my dvds to confirm that.

You are looking too into it in my opinion.

As a Spiritualist..you will just go back home....or through the journey back home where we came from. It can take years (our "time")....a split second or hundreds of years (our "time" ) depending on your mindset...but you definitley wont be "human" anymore.

There you go again . . .
Why would neutral 'Bless you' offend a Devil Worshiper? Who's giving the blessing in such a context is subjective, is it not?

And why would a Devil Worshiper look forward to rotting in hell?
