Here's an excerpt from the site:

By 2050, the U.S. Latino population is expected to nearly triple. This October, CNN's Soledad O'Brien explores how Latinos are reshaping our communities and culture and forcing a nation of immigrants to rediscover what it means to be an American.

Oh okay. It's a good way of educating the public, and listening to real, life stories directly from the mouths of people the program is dedicated to.

biggrin I doubt that he will. If he does, I am sure that he will follow up with some lame attack on latinos and how they are wrecking America.

It was alright. I liked how they showed the viewpoints on the parent from the Dominican Republic to NY and how they were trying to get their kids back into their background history.

I found the suicide / depression aspect from the second story very intrresting too.

The first story on the girl that was about to be deported after living here for 20 years was the most important though. I didnt know weather I agree with her or not. No it's NOT her fault that her parents brought her here when she was 7 illegally. No it's not her fault that America basically ignored everything, but now since 9/11 its like " ok you're done now everybody must go".

However I found the part where she was asked if she knew that having a fake SS# was illegal she ignored an answer and said, "I know it's not illegal to work". To which I found a bit snoddy and ignorant because she did know that obviously so she should not have been.

The other story was the Catholic churces and the viewpoints on the seperation of one for Spanish and one with an English service. The people who did not speak spanish were saying that it was not right to have to reach out to those who could not speak it because they should already know the language.

I agree...Americans should NOT HAVE to give in to people who don't share the English language...and they should not HAVE to be able to learn Spanish when its not the dominating language. However ... I do believe there will be just about more Latin people here in America in the next 50 years and may eve take on the Caucasian population. Most countries have two languages to speak.. even Canada can do French as a second major language..why can't we?

I think the older Americans will be more reluctant than the younger generation though.

Yes, it is sad that this girl may be deported. The parents should have found a way to get her citizenship. I know someone who was brought here as a child and just became a citizen 2 years ago. She was brought here when she was 4, but at least she had proper papers until she became a citizen.

It is sad that she has a daughter who she will have to leave, and on top of that this young lady doesn't know anyone in Mexico, so where is she going to be living if she gets deported?. Not sure if there is a center in Mexico that takes their own citizens back and helps them out until they get on their feet. It's a tough situation. I think when something like that happens, it should not be taken out on the individual who was brought here illegally as a child, only to learn years later you're not a citizen. She found out when she was in high school, I believe is what she said.

I also believe that since English is the dominating language, that those who wish to come her, should be required to learn it, if they plan on becoming citizens. That should be a requirement before becoming a citizen period. Your own country's language should be your second language when you decide to go into another country and accept citizenship there. No one else should have to change their language for you, especially when it's your country of birth they are coming to live in.

I also found it sad about the high drop-out rate among Hispanics in this country, and hopefully this program will enlighten the older Hispanics to push to make this a priority on encouraging Hispanic youth to graduate from high school, so they could go on to higher learning.

Lastly, those two Dominican/Puerto Rican young men who seemed embarassed to call themselves Latinos or embrace their ethnicity/culture were ridiculous. No one should be ashamed of their heritage. I went through that for a while during my public school/junior high years, until I went to high school, and started seeing other kids from various Caribbean countries attending my high school. Young people can be mean to each other, and many of the NYC Black kids knew very little about people from the Caribbean, because most of the ones I knew, their parents were from the Southern part of the U.S. so many of my friends weren't that familiar, with the Caribbean lingo or culture, and they used to make fun of kids or people from the Caribbean and call them all sorts of names and laugh at their accents.

I embrace it now, but look back and laugh at how silly it was for me to be embarassed by it. Now more Blacks whose parents/grandparents/great-grandparents came from the south and emigrated to the Northern states are more familiar with the Caribbean culture over the years. I still find a bit of ignorance among many regarding that culture, but all you can do is educate those that have been taught false stories about them. I guess those types of misunderstandings happen to a lot of ethnic groups, when they come here to live, and then have children born here, who experience living among two cultures--at home, and outside of the home.

I had it on last night in the background while I was fooling around on the computer and saw bits and pieces of it. My favorite was when they made a piniata (forgive me if I spelled it wrong) of that white racist and beat the hell out of it with sticks. lol And it made me furious when I saw them marching in the streets and some asshole was holding up a can of Lysol like he was going to spray it on them.

I missed that pinata part. I have to say, that I was proud of the lady, who was leading that march. She is a fighter and someone who just made my hero list. She doesn't back down, and I admire and respect her for that, and also not being afraid to face that racist sheriff.

She made a good point, she said something similar to stating that her people had Arizona first, and when the natives welcomed the Europeans in, they allowed them in, only to have Arizona stolen from them from the same people they embraced and welcomed. I found it sad, to see those racist signs held up against them.

I was wondering if Lou Dobbs, the Latino- eople hater, was in that crowd. Lou constantly rants about the immigration issue and especially against Latinos. I really don't like that guy. He forgets that his ancestors were immigrants and his ass is living on stolen land. It is sad that many Latinos just want to come here and make an honest living, and enjoy opportunities not afforded to them in their country. I know, they should be here legally, and do all they can to get the proper paperwork to be legal citizens, but I'm getting sick and tired of seeing racists with no shame, holding up signs with racist content expressing how they don't want to see certain people here. I bet if half of those people protesting against Latino immigrants, were to dig up their ancestry, they'd find some Latino heritage somewhere in there.

The second part comes on tonight. I do hope for part two, they show some success stories and the achievements and contributions many Latino people have made in this country.
