DISCUSSION ABOUT WHITE TRASH

Ummkay, I have some questions. What does this term mean today versus what it used to mean? What's the difference between being white trash and redneck, hillbilly or say, low class? Is trailer trash worse or better than white trash? Has the term become a bit of a joke as expressed below? What the hell is white trash exactly? Let's discuss...

I find the term prejudiced in two ways:


Firstly, there's no need to point to their color to identify them as trashy. Why not just redneck or hillbilly or , as the Brits say, Chav?

In addition to that it sort of implies that trash = black, but there just happen to be a few whites out there who are also trashy so let's label them white trash.

It's kind of like 'hot ghetto mess'. Well, that implies blacks especially when there's a fully separate 'white hot ghetto mess' category.

So in some respects, whether deliberate, subconciously, or just flat out as an unintended consequence it has both both negative implications for white and black alike depending on how you look at it.


But then again--none of the terms offend me much. Just an observation.

^ very interesting. I never even thought about why we need to include "white" in the term. Now I'm not sure, but I think this term was also more readily used in the south and dealt with what you might call the "dirt poor" or "uneducated". Now it just seems to be akin to calling someone a redneck and again the perception of poverty and being uneducated exists. For some reason, trailer trash and hillbilly sound the worst to me. I thought it was in poor taste when Palin's family was being referred to as Wasilla hillbillies.

I would rather be called a redneck than white trash any day... rednecks are people who are usually low to mid income working class, but like the simple country life style and arent interested in impressing the Jones's next door.., trailer trash refers to those who live in a trailer park, and around these parts most of the parks are N.A.S.T.Y! Hillybilly isnt a term used to put someone down as much as the other ones, it just means you arent very.. cultured? This is just my opinion of course but i live in the midwest and have seen them all!

I dunno, I think everyone is just too sensitive these days and very quick to jump on the race card.

White trash black trash red trash...I'm more offended by the word trash!

Also to all the labels negative or psoitive, it doesn't offend me. Because it's not me. I really love everyone. I always get called brother by everyone, and that's how I go about life.

Second, isn't that pic from Katrina?

Third, what about cracker? Some people get offended by that term while in some places it is used in reference to Southern white males with pride. Like Supa says, why should anyone be offended by being called a food item? For me, regardless of the word, the offense isn't in the word itself but rather in the user's intent. Same goes for the "N word"

That kind of thinking goes back hundreds of years - no matter how poor you are, no matter how much you're getting fucked by the whites in power, your white skin makes you better than a n****r.

I think I may hate the term "white/trailer trash" even more than I hate "nigger."

While a term like "nigger" ( or "hymie," "wetback," "chink," ad infinitum... and I'd place "hillbilly" here) stamps a social group as other and, therefore, intrinsically negative, it may or may not recognize the base humanity of the group. "White/trailer trash," on the other hand, leaves no uncertainty -- it actively suggests these folk were intended to be up to standard (the superiority of which is so assumed it needn't even be mentioned ), but are somehow defective... and altogether disposable. That's $#!@ed up.

Hillbilly and Redneck are not color exclusive.
The couple across the street is interracial (black and white) and because they're more "country"-oriented they are self-proclaimed "rednecks/hillbillies".

This was a surprise to me, since I'd always associated those terms with negative race-related connotations(but prior to living in VA I've always lived in the Northeast).

I guess different folk inject different meanings. Like some people take pride in the term "Ghetto" (used descriptively) while others find it offensive.
