The truth about healthcare in other countries. It seems all the lies about other health systems being bad are just that--lies.

it is necessary to help others, not only in our prayers, but in our daily lives. If we find we cannot help others, the least we can do is to desist from harming them.

Opposition to single payer is a blame-the-victim class-war on the poor by the top 1% who own 90% of the country (The Man) and their servants (the corporate media) and lackeys (mentally deranged political zombies who won't fight The Man because they're led to believe they can one day be The Man.)

Health care costs more per person in the US than in any nationalized health care nation with higher life expectancies and lower infant mortality rates. "We are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further." - Richard Dawkins

It's expensive and imperfect. Much like our much more expensive and more imperfect healthcare system now But in great Britain heart surgery doesn't mean you have to sell your house. C:\Otaassk~.exe Oh dear lawd, life is strange. vivid is my new boo!

This has just been posted on my work's intranet - union discussion board. Thought you might be interested.
What the "lying liars" are saying about our health service!
Whilst I had lots of second-hand info (from the likes of Al Franken and Jon Stewart) about the US Right's legendary capacity for dishonesty, even I am quite shocked at just how far they are prepared to go..... What is particularly breathtaking amid all the mendacious claims about the NHS "putting a price on life" is that they seem unconcerned that millions of their compatriots apparently have lives of no value whatsoever - since they cannot afford healthcare under the US system. And by the way.....forget "treading a fine line"....why isn't Brown ordering the British Embassy to come out firmly and put the record straight? From today's Guardian The National Health Service has become the butt of increasingly outlandish political attacks in the US as Republicans and conservative campaigners rail against Britain's "socialist" system as part of a tussle to defeat Barack Obama's proposals for broader government involvement in healthcare. Top-ranking Republicans have joined bloggers and well-funded free market organisations in scorning the NHS for its waiting lists and for "rationing" the availability of expensive treatments. As myths and half-truths circulate, British diplomats in the US are treading a delicate line in correcting falsehoods while trying to stay out of a vicious domestic dogfight over the future of American health policy. Slickly produced television advertisements trumpet the alleged failures of the NHS's 61-year tradition of tax-funded healthcare. To the dismay of British healthcare professionals, US critics have accused the service of putting an "Orwellian" financial cap on the value on human life, of allowing elderly people to die untreated and, in one case, for driving a despairing dental patient to mend his teeth with superglue. Having seen his approval ratings drop, Obama is seeking to counter this conservative onslaught by taking his message to the public, with a "town hall" meeting today at a school in New Hampshire. Last week, the most senior Republican on the Senate finance committee, Chuck Grassley, took NHS-baiting to a newly emotive level by claiming that his ailing Democratic colleague, Edward Kennedy, would be left to die untreated from a brain tumour in Britain on the grounds that he would be considered too old to deserve treatment. "I don't know for sure," said Grassley. "But I've heard several senators say that Ted Kennedy with a brain tumour, being 77 years old as opposed to being 37 years old, if he were in England, would not be treated for his disease, because end of life – when you get to be 77, your life is considered less valuable under those systems." The degree of misinformation is causing dismay in NHS circles. Andrew Dillon, chief executive of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice), pointed out that it was utterly false that Kennedy would be left untreated in Britain: "It is neither true nor is it anything you could extrapolate from anything we've ever recommended to the NHS." Others in the US have accused Obama of trying to set up "death panels" to decide who should live and who should die, along the lines of Nice, which determines the cost-effectiveness of NHS drugs. One right-leaning group, Conservatives for Patients' Rights, lists horror stories about British care on its website. An email widely circulated among US voters, of uncertain origin, claims that anyone over 59 in Britain is ineligible for treatment for heart disease. The British embassy in Washington is quietly trying to counter inaccuracies. A spokesman said: "We're keeping a close eye on things and where there's a factually wrong statement, we will take the opportunity to correct people in private. That said, we don't want to get involved in a domestic debate." A $1.2m television advertising campaign bankrolled by the conservative Club for Growth displays images of the union flag and Big Ben while intoning a figure of $22,750. A voiceover says: "In England, government health officials have decided that's how much six months of life is worth. If a medical treatment costs more, you're out of luck." The number is based on a ratio of £30,000 a year used by Nice in its assessment of whether drugs provide value for money. Dillon said this was one of many variables in determining cost-effectiveness of medicines. He said of his body's portrayal in the US: "It's very disappointing and it's not, obviously, the way in which Nice describes itself or the way in which we're perceived in the UK even among those who are disappointed or upset by our decisions." On Rupert Murdoch's Fox News channel, the conservative commentator Sean Hannity recently alighted upon the case of Gordon Cook, a security manager from Merseyside, who used superglue to stick a loose crown into his gum because he was unable to find an NHS dentist. The cautionary tale, which was based on a Daily Mail report from 2006, prompted Hannity to warn his viewers: "If the Democrats have their way, get your superglue ready." The broader tone of the US healthcare debate has become increasingly bitter. The former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin last week described president Obama's proposals as "evil", while the radio presenter Rush Limbaugh has compared a logo used for the White House's reform plans to a Nazi swastika. Hecklers have disrupted town hall meetings called to discuss the health reform plans. David Levinthal, a spokesman for the nonpartisan Centre for Responsive Politics, said the sheer scale of the issue, which will affect the entire trajectory of US medical care, was arousing passions: "It's no surprise you have factions from every political stripe attempting to influence the debate and some of those groups are certainly playing to the deepest fears of Americans. There's been a great deal of documented disinformation propagated throughout the country." Defenders of Britain's system point out that the UK spends less per head on healthcare but has a higher life expectancy than the US. The World Health Organisation ranks Britain's healthcare as 18th in the world, while the US is in 37th place. The British Medical Association said a majority of Britain's doctors have consistently supported public provision of healthcare. A spokeswoman said the association's 140,000 members were sceptical about the US approach to medicine: "Doctors and the public here are appalled that there are so many people on the US who don't have proper access to healthcare. It's something we would find very, very shocking." Is there anybody else who has slightly mysterious bruises?

I have a very large extended family, some who have had cancer, heart attacks, various other ailments, and not one has ever complained about the care they received in Canada's health system. Our doctors and technology are second to none. As a Canadian, I'm pretty sure I've talked to a lot more canadians than you, so odd that the particular canadians you spoke with were negative. Here's the issue. It's not necessarily whether or not we will have accessible health care for everyone in the U.S. But rather or not we're going to just sit here and allow the private insurance companies (you know the ones that received numerous stimulus packages from our tax dollars) to continue to rob us deaf, dumb, and blind. While the regular joes are beating each other up at these "townhall meetings" the crooked CEOs and fellow executives laugh all the way to the bank cleaning house plus denying service to grandma letting her die. So if our "hero" Sarah Palin is sooo concerned about death panels, she should round-up these mobsters and go after the health care industry. Oh, I get it... these same executives serve as lobbyists that line her, Limbaugh's, Beck's, Hannity's, practically the entire GOP's, and even a few Democrats' pockets with bribe "hush" money to proliferate the airwaves with disinformation and downright lies stirring the out-of-work, heavily in debt right wingers, some of whom have just realized their President is African-American to new levels of violence and mayhem. Go ask the Bush Crime Family where one of their sons, I believe Jeb got caught up in some health care industry scam several years back. [Edited 8/12/09 21:18pm]

The UK healthcare system has loads of problems, like understaffing, long waiting lists for operations(sometimes up 2 a year-2 years), lack of researching, lack of funding, hospital closings or mergings(in some areas theres not even an ER at the local hospital, and so, emergency cases have 2 b taken miles away!!!!), the list goes on!! I dont really advocate an NHS type of system for the USA, but, I agree, some drastic changes need 2 b made but still keep the USA at the forefront of superior medical and healthcare!!!!

She has made a full recovery, she did not have to wait on any lists or go to dirty facilities. I have commented on the health care issue before in P&R and I have always said that no system is perfect but the system in the US is broken and needs help NOW! My mom researched and tried to get her the best care for the 2 years that she survived the disease and was going through treatment. She lived in Delaware, there were nice fancy buildings there where she got her chemo & radiation. She worked at GM for 30 years and was supposed to have great health insurance coverage, so she thought until she found out she had cancer. Her and my Uncle spent a fortune going to specialists because she had small cell and it was aggressive and they were unable to operate. The furthest they could afford to travel was to Pittsburgh for specialized treatment. Ahhh I see the whole bigger is better mentality is still alive and well in the states. ~Try the Alternative~

I can't speak for the UK from personal experience, but here in Austria (where the standards of health care would be more or less comparable to Germany) I have never witnessed a hospital as you described it. in fact most are so clean I almost feel I have to take my shoes off whenever I enter I am lucky enough I never had to stay at a hospital myself since the age of 5, however I do have plenty enough experince regarding my family i.e. my wife, my son, uncles, aunts, and foremost my mother... she was diagnosed with ovarial cancer around 13 years ago (average life expectation: 2 or 3 years), and since then she had 4 operations and 3 chemotherapies, and of course countless checkups and dozens of stays at the hospital. ALL the operations (removal of tumors ec.) took place within a few DAYS after the diagnoses, 1 or 2 weeks maximum. no waiting lists. and no "death panels" and the hospital rooms? not more than 3 people in one room, of course including bathroom, phone and cable TV with an individuial monitor at EVERY single bed, Internet connection (you have to bring your own notebook though...) also can't complain I think. sure maybe this IS a rather modern hospital and there are probably also different ones stil out there, however, the place where my son or my wife had to stay was pracitically the same (though in one case she had to share a TV set with 2 other people in the room, oh bugger... still sounds rather acceptable in addition I might add that my wife is from Quebec and witnessed 27 years of Canadian health care and now 11 years of the Austrian one. and she admits that the Canadian system is still SEVERLY behind the Austrian standards on almost every level. and when my Canadian brother in law was in Austria some months ago, after a small "accident" he could witness Austrian health care first hand inside a hospital. without going into details, he left the hospital totally puzzled and amazed, and he tagged this incident as the most remarkable and informative during his whole European trip... of course not PERFECT, because such a thing doesn' exist, however it is still pretty save to say that the Austrian health care is TOP NOTCH so then... when together with a few friends I watched the news about some of the nutsacks in America who are currently protesting on the street and saw some holding up signs like "save the BEST HEALTH CARE in the world" we just burst into laughther out of disbelief, how they can be so ignorant, so uninformed, so clueless. after we cooled down we thought that this IS not that funny but rather very SAD.... how the corporate bots can be so severly mind-controlled by corrupt politicians, Fox/Rush/idiots-propaganda, insurances and pharma lobbies etc. into actually believing this BS. mindboggling. . First time: In 1986 when myself and my not even born yet baby nearly died while I was trying 2 deliver him cos they discovered AT THE LAST MINUTE that I couldnt give birth normally and I had 2 have an emergency C-Section at the 11th hour!!!! Whereas if they all did their jobs properly every ttime I went for pre-natal checkups they would have done all the right tests(which involves calibrations and measuring of the birth canal) and everything and prepared me and themselves for the option of a C-Section Birth!! In the USA, they do EVERYTHING to ensure SAFE childbirth for both the mother and the baby!!! Second time: In 1988 I nearly died due 2 an ectopic(tubular) pregnancy all because my stupid whacked out doctor(who should have retired years ago before this incident) I had at the time prescribed me the wrong type of birth control pill( he just gave me another brand of mini-pill instead of the normal birth pill which I thought I was taking - long story!!). Hence, I became pregnant and the fetus got stuck in one of my tubes and started 2 grow there instead of in the womb, and even then the docs just said I had a very bad monthly and told me 2 go home and take 2 Anacins!!! I WILL NEVER LET THE NHS TOUCH ME!!!!! [Edited 8/13/09 2:43am] [Edited 8/13/09 2:44am] I could spend the entire day talking about ppl I know in the US that were misdiagnosed, almost died during labour and had the wrong body parts removed due to human error. Everyone has a story. My point is, was and always will be that the US health care system is broken and needs to be fixed. No country should have that many ppl walking around without medical coverage. My mom is currently on Medicare, I could tell you some horror stories about what she has gone through but it will not change anything in this debate. ~Try the Alternative~

I WILL NEVER LET THE NHS TOUCH ME!!!!! okay... but even if NHS sucks at times that doesn't make the Amercian system any better, does it? - way over 40 million people in the US with no health coverage at all - even if you are insured you have to fear, that it might not help you once you REALLY need it. almost 2/3 of personal bankrupcies are based on medical expenses, and the vast majority of those people DID have PRIVATE coverage before the company decided to better keep the money for themselves... - lower life expectancies - higher infant mortality rates - INSANE costs, like almost twice as expensive than the already expensive French system.. but STILL some claim that the GOVERMENT can't run programs efficiently?! utter BULLSHIT obviously. unless you define "efficient" as "making maximum profit for the corporations involved"... and that is the core problem.. a goverment progam does not need to maximize profits. it's enough to cover the costs. so by design a private program has a totally different goal: maximum PROFIT. while the goverment programs only goal would be to cure and help people. the choice between those two models? especially for Christians or anyone with morals and some humanistic standards that would be no debate. for fake Christian bigots and corporate bots it's different of course. ... yeah ...Jesus never healed any sick people unless they could pay and he would make some profit. and he always said "leprosy is a matter of personal responsibility" and still some fact-free ignorant pricks and utter idiots brag that the American system is "the best system in the world" and that it "doesn't need any reform". HELLO?!?! that is pure INSANITY. health care is a basic human rigth. and it would be time for the US to at least move forward into the 20th century. on the other hand if I see the retarded uninformed troglodytes screaming on the street, I tend to say, hey they don't want it, they know jack shit, they don't want to get information and look at facts... so they don't deserve it! . Management of a delivery is a complicated thing but simple measurements of your vagina and circumference of the babies head are not diagnostic at all. Your situation was impossible to predict and managed perfectly. mother and baby ok - job done - FOR FREE! 2. Nobody knows why ectopic pregnancy occurs. Tubal ligation and life saved from a potentially critical situation - job done - FOR FREE! 3. A lack of information about your third point renders me helpless. But, free doctor, free ambulance and you are NOT dead. Job Done - FOR FREE! Just ask an American what each of those would have cost under their current system. I personally beleive that the NHS would b a million times much better, if people started sueing them more for millions over their fuck-ups!!!! they would soon improve then!!!!!
