Obama invites senators to birthday lunch

WASHINGTON, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama invited all his allies in the Senate to attend his birthday lunch at the White House, said his spokesman on Monday.

All 58 Democrats and two Democrat-leaned independents in the Senate have received invitation to the president's 48-year-old birthday lunch on Tuesday, "to continue to talk about the priorities that they have," said Press Secretary Robert Gibbs at a press briefing.

According to the spokesman, among the priorities, healthcare policy reform, economic recovery and energy legislation would be discussed.

The president would also urge senators to approve about 2 billion U.S. dollars more into a "Cash for Clunkers" program that lets consumers trade in gas-guzzling cars and trucks for more efficient vehicles, said Gibbs.

The Obama administration has been pushing forward with its climate change and healthcare plans, among others, but the plans are unlikely to be approved by Congress before the August recess begins later this month, partly due to hesitations among his own Democrats.
