North Korea Threatens to Wipe U.S. Off the Map

Source: The Associated Press

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - North Korea threatened Wednesday to wipe the United States off the map as Washington and its allies watched for signs the regime will launch a series of missiles in the coming days.

Off China's coast, a U.S. destroyer was tailing a North Korean ship suspected of transporting illicit weapons to Myanmar in what could be the first test of U.N. sanctions passed to punish the nation for an underground nuclear test last month.

The Kang Nam left the North Korean port of Nampo a week ago with the USS John S. McCain close behind. The ship, accused of transporting banned goods in the past, is believed bound for Myanmar, according to South Korean and U.S. officials.

The new U.N. Security Council resolution requires member states to seek permission to inspect suspicious cargo. North Korea has said it would consider interception a declaration of war and on Wednesday accused the U.S. of seeking to provoke another Korean War.

"If the U.S. imperialists start another war, the army and people of Korea will ... wipe out the aggressors on the globe once and for all," the official Korean Central News Agency said.

The warning came on the eve of the 59th anniversary of the start of the three-year Korean War, which ended in a truce in 1953, not a peace treaty, leaving the peninsula in state of war.

The U.S. has 28,500 troops in South Korea to protect against an outbreak of hostilities.

Tensions have been high since North Korea launched a long-range rocket in April and then conducted its second underground atomic test on May 25.

Reacting to U.N. condemnation of that test, North Korea walked away from nuclear disarmament talks and warned it would fire a long-range missile.

North Korea has banned ships from the waters off its east coast starting Thursday through July 10 for military exercises, Japan's Coast Guard said.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported Wednesday that the North may fire a Scud missile with a range of up to 310 miles (500 kilometers) or a short-range ground-to-ship missile with a range of 100 miles (160 kilometers) during the no-sail period.

A senior South Korean government official said the no-sail ban is believed connected to North Korean plans to fire short- or mid-range missiles.
He spoke on condition of anonymity, citing department policy.

U.S. defense and counterproliferation officials in Washington said they also expected the North to launch short- to medium-range missiles. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence.

South Korea will expedite the introduction of high-tech unmanned aerial surveillance systems and "bunker-buster" bombs in response to North Korea's provocations, the Chosun Ilbo newspaper said, citing unidentified ruling party members.

Meanwhile, a flurry of diplomatic efforts were under way to try getting North Korea to return to disarmament talks.

Russia's top nuclear envoy, Alexei Borodavkin, said after meeting with his South Korean counterpart that Moscow is open to other formats for discussion since Pyongyang has pulled out of formal six-nation negotiations.

In Beijing, top U.S. and Chinese defense officials also discussed North Korea. U.S. Defense Undersecretary Michele Flournoy was heading next to Tokyo and Seoul for talks.

South Korea has proposed high-level "consultations" to discuss North Korea with the U.S., Russia, China and Japan.

I'm worried about this.

We as a country are strained to our limits, economically, and militarily and do not want another war, we just want to get back to work.
North Korea is being opportunistic seeing how far they can test us under these circumstances.
I believe the status that W left the US, will only encourage more of this. He did not make us safer, he left us wide open.

I am worried because we don’t need more crap, we do not need any more of our young men and women of our military hurt, here in California we can barely operate as it is now, and another war will go along ways toward completely bankrupting us
Hopefully diplomacy and cooler heads prevail.

Trust me, as long as China not supporting these people, they will not do a darn thing. China is even against them right now. North Korea is not going to do anything cause all it takes is one missile shot from Kim Jon Il, North korea done for. hey know how to march though, i have to give them that

I sure hope so.

Another war right now will forever change any hope of things getting back to normal any time soon, and will change the US for the worse in every way for the rest of my lifetime.

Don't sweat it. Nuclear war is never gonna happen. Ever. Way too much to lose from any and all parties involved in a nuke attack. Even the craziest of leaders isn't that crazy nor are his follwers.

Do the math people.
North Korea has fewer than ten atomic bombs.
The U.S. has several thousand nuclear warheads and an unknown number of atomic bombs.
North Korea could not wipe the U.S. off the face of the earth.

I am not too worried about atomic warfare; I am worried about another long drawn out engagement.
Image how well we are doing against lowly terrorists hiding in caves, or how well we are doing in Iraq. I am worried about the long term military and economic consequences if this isn’t diplomatically settled.

China, South Korea, and Japan need to step up, instead of leaving all the dirty work to us.
If we are spread so thin, economically, and fighting wars in different parts of the world, historically this has always meant the end of all great empires. (Not that the US is an empire)

Nobody is saying that but he is in office for 5 months! Bush fucked up for 8 years. It doesn't get cleaned up overnight. For someone who preaches about personal responsibility you certainly can't take any!

Just like Obama will blame Bush. That doesn't mean everything that happens during this term is Bush's fault. Just like everything during Bush's first term wasn't Clinton's.

Kim Jong Il is not stupid. His country can't even feed itself, and a prolonged war with the US would lead to his empire collapsing. These are just empty threats.

It ain't like the good ol' days where communist dictators got all the attention. Now the limelight goes to Muslim terrorists. King Jong-Il wants to know we care.

Japan and South Korea can't step up to North Korea. They're not armed and can't piss anybody off because they're in the direct line of fire. What dirty work are you speaking of, though? N. Korea is testing us and using our weak moment as a nation because they want a formal end to the Korean War and want to wrangle a treaty out of us to preserve their regime and prevent any chance of future invasion from us. How is that dirty work that should be shifted unto the Japanese and South Koreans?

Layers of wrong, but sad and true lol Not that I should be laughing at this shit because I have dear friends, loved ones, and business colleagues in that region and they're vunerable as hell to all of these political shenangigans. But even my friends throughout Asia are like"we really wish this sommammabitch would go sitdown and chill out somewhere hmm rolleyes hmm" The problem is, for those nations that are not as strongly armed, they can't say that publicly, but many people are saying (in private conversation) what purple just threw out there.

At the end of the day, throwing out a nuclear bomb in this day and age is nothing less than a suicide mission for any nation. We all know that people don't generally commit suicide unless they feel they have nothing left to hold onto, and nothing left to lose. South Korea is desperately trying to hold on to something (and maybe wrestle a little international leverage out on their side in the process). They're pulling that old school last ditch effort of wrangling through intimidation, and will push it to the limit if they have to. Sort of like a bluff.

The only thing with a bluff is that there is only so far you can go before you reach the point of no return. all this sabre rattling is just talk (for the moment). I actually agree with the Administration for not playing into it. It just means that Lil Kim just has to keep upping his anty and will eventually be shown for a fraud, or he'll foolishly start an international war conflict (to save face) with minor support that he has no means to keep up over a sustained period. He has a million man strong army...but those mothas ain't got nothin' to eatto keep that army marchin',unless it turns into some Lord of the Flies shit and maybe they start eating each other
