OHIO ORGERS!! Ohio must set up a way to verify all new voters by Friday

Ohio must set up a way to verify all new voters
Federal appeals court rules the system must be in place before Friday

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27188603/

CINCINNATI - A federal appeals court on Tuesday ordered Ohio's top elections official to set up a system by Friday to verify the eligibility of new voters and make the information available to the state's 88 county election boards.

The full 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati upheld a lower court ruling that Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner must use other government records to check thousands of new voters for registration fraud.

A three-judge panel of the 6th Circuit had disagreed last week, but the full court's ruling overturns that decision.

Ohio Republicans had sued Brunner, a Democrat. Her spokesman had no immediate comment Tuesday.

666,000 registrations since January
About 666,000 Ohioans have registered to vote since January, with many doing so before the contested Democratic primary election last March between Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Since then, Ohio Republicans have filed a series of challenges to the registrations and Brunner's administration of election rules. They have helped voters file lawsuits against local boards of election over registration rules, absentee ballot requests and a weeklong period that allowed registration and voting on the same day.

Brunner previously said there was no way to set up the system with such speed.

Last week, a three-judge panel of the 6th Circuit had sided with Brunner, but after hearing an appeal the full panel sided with the GOP and U.S. District Judge George C. Smith in Columbus. Smith had ordered Brunner to develop a way to verify voter registration information and make it available to local election boards.

Brunner argued that it would take two to three days to create the necessary computer programs, and said nothing in the federal Help America Vote Act required her to do what the district court ordered.

GOP alleges partisan agenda
Tuesday's order directs Brunner to verify new registrations by comparing that information with data from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles or the Social Security Administration.

Ohio Republican Chairman Bob Bennett accused Brunner of pursuing a partisan agenda and said "her delay in providing this matching system leaves little time for election officials to act on questionable registrations."

Bennett said Brunner was destroying the public's trust in Ohio's elections system.

"Her shameful actions to disenfranchise Republican absentee voters, block the transparency of early voting and refuse the proper verification of newly registered voters have rightfully damaged her credibility as a nonpartisan election administrator," he said.

Polling in the state shows Obama, now the Democratic presidential nominee, slightly ahead of Republican challenger John McCain. Both campaigns have worked hard in the state, which has 20 electoral votes and gave President Bush a second term in 2004.

I kept telling you guys about them stealing the election. We have to be super aware this time. The one good thing is that in early voting Barack leads by 4 points.

First its removing voting booths in predominantly African Americans communities, then shipping them into the communities that have a larger Republican base, in order to suppress the black vote. Now this. People waited HOURS to vote in Ohio during the last Presidential elections.
(loved that PBS special geek) Just another tactic to keep people from voting. mad

i dont see why it cant be one vote per registered state ID

whats the fucking problem with that? typically even if you dont have a drivers ID you do have a state ID cause you need it for various things such as buying cigarettes and alcohol

You condescending remark to me shows how little respect you have for people that are different than you. No surprise you take that tone with someone like me, I was speaking of things done in the past to which some here might not be aware of.

Some don't realize the lengths some coalitions of crooked people will go to. I say this so that people who are not aware may see that many unsuspecting obstacles are headed to African American voter. So save your disrespect for someone that will play with your trifling ass.

they are way ahead of us. i am afraid that obama may be defeated by these unethical, immoral tactics. this is a case where the law is not necessarily just.

dude, please calm down. 'no shit sherlock' is an ordinary, common expression of speech which is not considered to be an insult. i did not intend it that way.

now, let's focus on the real issue which is obama, and how we can assure his victory over this tactic!

its a crock of shit. they keep tabs on all of us and our where-abouts. if anyone commits a crime is murdered, they rarely are they unable to positively identify who that person is.
Why with all these vast technologies used to log identities would there be a question when it comes to voting.
IRS
SSI
SSD
welfare
food stamps
unemployment checks
just to name a few of common manners used in logging peoples identities.
typically for them they need the very least a state ID to register, when i last renewed my lisence they gave me everything i needed to register to vote right then and there.
last election i just recently moved from another state and had my old DL, so i just needed some mail with my current address in addition to my DL.

i dont see what the problem is with this verification, when they should have it all taken care of with access to the state state IDs & DLs

the state has ALL of this at their finger tips. The PEOPLE pay for all this information gathered. why cant they have access to it for elections?

i wonder if a rapidly filed appeal of this decision would at least delay its implementation . . hmm

lol I am calm... not all black people are angry ya know poke
I am familiar with that expression, it is common when someone is mocking another.

But anyways, I agree with you eek this situation is a bad one esp. for first time voters. All I can say is be prepared, visit websites like
justvote,org
vote.org
canivote.org
Know where to cast your vote, come early, bring ID.
call the mayor's help line for any specific questions about your area, and people need to start voting more often in the primary elections, so that these areas (like predominantly low income areas) have equal representation.

Horatio is right, registering for voting has become a breeze, the same should apply with casting a ballot. Many are turned away because they went to the wrong place to vote, or some other mess, like not filling in the circle completely. rolleyes its all silly in this day and age for this type of stuff to keep happening.

As far as right now for those voters in Ohio, I would call my local state representative ASAP to try to figure out what to do for THIS election. Absentee ballot rules may apply here.

well, i guess that expression could be used as a form of mockery. i did not intend to mock you. i meant it as in "absolutely right, sherlock"

besides, i think we're on the same side here? wanting obama to win? i truly hope this doesn't affect the outcome in ohio. that could be quite serious with respect to the outcome of the election

I think Ohio should secede from the union.

i sure hope not! there are a LOT of people who have registered for the first time specifically to vote for obama. if they are excluded that could well tip the balance.
