Libs behaving badly: Pair arrested after McCain sign torched in Sellwood

Pair arrested after McCain sign torched in Sellwood

PORTLAND, Ore. - Authorities have arrested two men after a Molotov cocktail was thrown at a 4-foot by 8-foot campaign sign for Republican presidential candidate John McCain in a southeast Portland yard.

Karen Scrutton said she was asleep inside her home at 7956 S.E. 17th Ave. in the Sellwood neighborhood when she saw her sign go up in flames after 1 a.m.

"I screamed upstairs to my husband, 'Gene! Gene!" she said.

A neighbor heard a crash and chased off one of the suspects. Gene Scrutton said his son-in-law found another suspect not far away.

Not long after, investigators picked up Leslie Brockette Leudtke and Kevin Carl Robinson, both 23. After interviewing them, the pair was charged with four counts each of manufacturing and possession of a destructive device. In addition, Leudtke was charged with a single count of reckless burning.

Witnesses said the suspects threw a Molotov cocktail at the sign and used another as a torch.

The Scruttons worried that their home could have caught on fire.

"Our whole house could have burnt down," Karen Scrutton said while thanking her neighbor for intervening.

Despite the ordeal, she said they won't take the sign down. It suffered only minor damage from the fire.

Just like these two idiots don't represent average Obama supporters, the idiots who say hateful comments at McCain rallies, signs, etc do not represent average conservatives. Agreed?

I don't know the validity of Milbank's story (ie - who said it, was the person "within earshot" of Palin, etc). If someone said "kill him" at a McCain/Palin rally (which I would never be at in the first place), I would have a few choice words for him myself. That type of language, etc should not be tolerated and I have a HUGE problem believing that this occurred and that everyone just sat there, etc. I wasn't there so I don't know, but despite what some may think, your average conservative does NOT approve of this kind of BS.

I'm talking about nonsense like this being used to call the average conservative racist, etc. Everyone jumps on the bandwagon and claims that conservatives support this kind of BS. WE DON'T!!!!! (at least even-minded conservatives like me):

i agree in as much as to say that neither party has a monopoly on classless idiots who pull dumbass embarrassing stunts.

but enough about the candidates! biggrin

seriously, i don't think we can debate that both sides have people who think it's cute to wear offensive t-shirts and vandalise campaign signs and whatnot.

when people actually catcall threats at rallies, i think that's something that needs to be handled and addressed, and the public needs to understand that the G.O.P. won't tolerate threats and violent hate speech against the other candidate.

Who, other than Milbank, heard this? You're taking ONE story with no witnesses to smear republicans in the rally. I find it VERY hard to believe that anyone heard this and if it was heard that it wasn't dealt with! Please show me some proof that this happened and that nothing was done! Please! Please!!!

why are you talking around the argument and not addressing the parameters of the topic? "prove that it happened", "people might have yelled 'kill him' but liberals peed on a palin flyer", etc.

well, right, okay to all that, but it makes me think that you're saying a bit of vandalism is more or less on par with someone calling for obama's murder during a rally. like, one is as harmful/harmless as the other to you.

Anxiety, please just hear me out on this: If I read a report by one person that said someone in a crowd "kill McCain" and said - "Anxiety - I want you to respond to this person and why neither the candidate nor the people at the rally did anything. Why did they simply just allow this"?, how would you respond? Don't you need to know if the story is true before responding to it?

I missed all the fun.

What it seems we can agree on is that jerks, a-holes and idiots were jerks, a-holes and idiots probably prior to assuming any political affiliation.
They may not even have one.

It's boorish and often wrong regardless of who they believe they are supporting or helping.
We need a better level of political discourse where candidates are tempted to encourage ignorant behavior.

Meanwhile, civic knowledge is enhanced by discussing public affairs, taking part in civic activities and reading about current events and history, the group said.

Is that the point you are trying to make?? Guess what, people are stealing and vandalizing yard signs all over the country, targeting both candidates. That's nothing new, it happens every election season.

But what is new is the hate, anger and racism expressed at a large number of McCain rallies by a very large number of people.

imo, Republicans, here and on the campaign trail, have exploited the left's willingness to criticize their own shortcomings. there have always been discussions between various parts of the left - most recently, the split between Hillary and Obama supporters. everybody agrees that Palin would not have been nominated if Hillary would have been the candidate for president or vice president. for once, this has backfired on them - Hillary supporters did not run for the McCain/Palin ticket in droves, and the lack of depth of Palin's knowledge has been shown very clearly.

same thing here. the "lefties" have criticized actions on their side of the spectrum, while the right-wingers have been mum on the ridiculous smears on their side.

add to that the easily debunked comparisons asserted by the right - damaging a yard sign, while stupid and wrong, is in no way comparable to the calls to kill a presidential candidate. the Obama/Biden ticket has been nothing but respectful toward McCain, and has said practically nothing about Palin. and McCain and Palin have denied any sort of responsibility for whipping their crowds into a frenzy. the comparisons are simply spin, nothing else.
