I haven't seen it, Mach...but I will now. nod I definitely agree with this:

Contemporary Christians are largely ignorant of the origins of their religion

I was speaking with a chaplain at work, who was talking about different denominations and said that for the most part, most do not understand anything except for core teachings as related to their religion, especially in the south. He said when pushed, most could not tell much more about their chosen religion, except for they believed Jesus was the Savior and believed that God would punish sinners, etc. When he would try to speak with them about the Bible, most could not even reference the Bible to support their beliefs.

He also said one of the most quoted Bible scriptures (when asked in a poll) was: "God helps those that help themselves." He pointed out that it was Mark Twain who said that and that it is no where in the Bible, but that it was still quoted as a Bible verse by more people than any other authentic Bible verse.

ing one day about racial prejudice, Paramahansa Yogananda said, "God is not pleased to be insulted when He wears His dark suits."

But, yeah, they know the answers, and until WE accept Jesus into our hearts we can never understand

Funny, sad...and true. I'd venture to say that if everyone sat down and researched their said religion...I mean REALLY researched with an open mind and no bias, and found out exactly what the history was...what the origins were, they'd probably either have a heart attack or go off into the woods and fast for 40 days. lol

it is necessary to help others, not only in our prayers, but in our daily lives. If we find we cannot help others, the least we can do is to desist from harming them.

agreed. If we never informed our children of organised religion, but then at the age of 18 (or so), provided them with the detail of the various beliefs, their histories and origins, the scientific knowledge we have and asked them to decide for themselves what to believe, the numbers involved in organised religion would crumble. That is increasingly what we are seeing in Europe as more and more parents are letting their children decide for themselves and more and more are rejecting religion as baseless or at best highly questionable and irrational. Add to that the (net) negative role religion continues to play, and we see why its demise is inevitable..

well said.

IMO religion has always been a thing of control.

the ignorant masses are controlled by religion and its leaders, religion also controls much of the worlds politics and social structures.

I cannot understand religion based on fear, you must be saved.

Many modern christians insist that they do not follow a religion, but they do, they are still following the rhetoric of those in control.

i watched some clips on youtube - they were very interesting; i'd like to see the whole thing.

i just started a class with a philosophy professor who claims that he can scientifically prove that god exists (that's not the topic of the class, btw). that was fascinating to me. (but for all i know, a lot of people claim that shrug )

i would imagine he will at some point in this ongoing series. i'll report back! wink

one thing that struck me, though - he is a very nice guy with a good sense of humor, but he also seems somewhat unhappy and a little petty. if you knew, for a scientific FACT, that god exists, wouldn't you be the happiest person on earth? maybe not... shrug

Just thinking on this further, wouldn't we all be gutted if it turned out that the Old Testament God was real? I mean, the guy is an absolute sociopathic pyscho. Imagine if he really did have the power to determine our eternal fate. It would be like being subject to the decisions of Jack Nickolson's Joker

does anything with the words "ignorant" and "Christians" automatically find you in agreement?
