GOP Blacks: Fewest At Convention in 40 years

Some African-American Republicans have found the Xcel Energy Center depressing. Everywhere they look, they see evidence of what they consider one of their party's biggest shortcomings.

Only 36 of 2,380 delegates seated on the convention floor are black, the fewest since the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies began tracking diversity at political conventions 40 years ago.

Each night, the overwhelmingly white audience watches a series of white politicians step to the lectern — a visual reminder that no Black Republican has served as a governor, U.S. senator or U.S. House member in the past six years.

"It's hard to look around and not get frustrated," said Michael Steele, a black Republican and former lieutenant governor of Maryland. "You almost have to think, 'Wait. How did it come to this?' "

Nationally, two-thirds of Americans are non-Hispanic whites, 12.4 percent are black and 14.8 percent are Hispanic, according to the Census Bureau's 2006 numbers.

oh i thought it was just me. the cameras kept showing the same five black people over and over and they showed this one asian women six times. it's like they were trying their darnest to showcase the extremely few minorities in the audience.

I wonder how many were named Tiger?

Which is why it's freaking hilarious to me that people really don't see the GOP for what it truly is.

Again, what we see in the Republican party, in my opinion, is reflective of society as a whole. This is a party of well to do people, powerful people, and people tied closely to big business. Obviously minorities still have a very long way to go before we have a slice of that pie and can embrace those ideals--they simply benefit us. I don't think blaming it on loyalty to the "Obama" factor is enough to explain the monochromatic faces at the party. Rather, it's reflective of how imbalanced the spread of wealth still is in this nation.

What perplexes me is how many women were in the audience. Do they hate themselves? (counting down the seconds before some extremist pro-lifer offers up a spirited argument )

There were very few from what I've seen. Audience didn't reflect all the faces of America. Compared to what I saw at the DNC last week to the audience last night, it confirmed to me that there are two Americas.

Looking at the faces of the the convention it looked like the elite managed to convince a few of the cowboys and well meaning (But misguided self-identified patriots--i.e., rednecks) to come join in the fun.

Ah! So that's how I came up with 10 Black dudes, 3 Black sistas, and (that) one Asian sista! They just kept showing them from different angles!

How much you wanna bet they would tell them to change their hat or shirt for each camera angle: "Ok, LaMont, we're gonna need you to put the black "MIA" baseball cap on for camera 3, then put on the cowboy hat and stick a straw of hay in your mouth when we pan camera 4 towards ya."
