and it's ALWAYS about the best candidate and NOT about "party" lines

I vote along party lines, unless I can split my ticket. Then I vote for the best candidate.

I vote for the party that I can most identify with. I usually don't care about candidates a lot, after all they are just represantives of their parties although I could never imagine myself to become a member of any party. We will have elections for a new government here in Austria in some weeks and I will vote for the party who is most critical towards the right wing parties which will gain quite some votes and not likely to build a coalition government with any of them.

The voting process and government is different here in the UK than the US. I think if the process and the government in the US was more like here then we might see some improvements.
I guess different is not always better but it seems the process in the states is broken.

I am not sure if it is the same in Austria as it is here?

Here it is completely different than it is in the US, but I don't know what it's exactly like in England.

If you vote on issues, you tend to end up voting for candidates of the same party.

Up here in Canada we've got a multi-party system.

I vote based on issues, and ideologically I'm definitely a left-leaner. Needless to say, the Liberals and Conservatives have never gotten my vote and it's not likely either party ever will.

I don't understand people who only vote for either the Liberals or the Conservatives to the exclusion of every other party. The logic I've been given when I ask why someone would do that is that a vote for anyone else would be a wasted vote because it's pretty much guaranteed the party won't be leading. Bullshit, say I. Doesn't it undermine the idea of a true democracy if you're only throwing your vote in with who you think will win, rather than who you think is right for the job?
