White privilege, does it still exist? Isn't it really more about class nowadays? I mean, I see black Americans with nice cars, nice houses, white folk in trailers or homeless guys with dirty clothes, begging for change. Media and culturally, white rule is obvious, but the tides seem to be changing. We may all be in the same boat--there are swells in the sea, but we are all on this same island and the sharks are still hungry.  Wave your wildsigns high!! |

My first reaction is to say you have to be white to post this. But to answer your question yes it does. I think it's one reason people are reluctant to vote for Obama is that they feel it will erode that white privilege although it will take decades to undo centuries of racism, discrimination, abuse and white privilege. If you're white it's harder to notice even when you are poor because you take it for granted that police won't harass you, you won't be treated on the street as if you are about assault everyone you share the sidewalk with, won't be followed around in store, won't be shot by police who won't be punished . . . Meanwhile, civic knowledge is enhanced by discussing public affairs, taking part in civic activities and reading about current events and history, the group said.

But if you have a rich white guy and a rich black guy, you can bet the white guy'll get more privileges than the black guy will. Race has been used as an excuse to discriminate by class in some cases. But try this: Take a POOR white person and RICH black person, put them both in identical luxury cars and see which one gets harrassed the most. THAT, my friend, is a prime example of white privilege. But you can take a poor white male and an educated Black, rich male, put them both in jeans and a casual shirt with sneakers and send them to a department store and guess who'll get followed first? You could put a poor white male and a rich and educated Black male in the elevator with a white woman...guess who she'll hold her bag tighter from? People see color first. case closed. We're still fighting the ugly monster called racism. That B.S. and you know it. A business isn't going to promote or higher someone unqualified nor does affirmative action require that they do so. I didn't hear you complaining when every police, and fire department in the country was white and unqualified whites were hired because their father, uncle, brother, etc worked in the department. That's the thing, how can you assume they are under-qualified just because they are hired under affirmative action? Secondly, one can't really say that every person they consider a minority was offered a job because of affirmative action. or because they were under-qualified and was offered the position over a non-minority, with more education and experience. It also depends on what kind of person the employer is looking for. Sometimes your attitude vs altitude can determine your success. You could have 10 degrees and 10 years of experience, doesn't mean you'll get the job over someone with less experience or education. If your attitude/personality does not win over the employer, especially in the private industry, then you may not get that job. Also, even if a person is hired under affirmative action, just like the person who is not, both still have to prove they can perform the job. Affirmative action or not. If you can't perform the job or get along with your co-workers and persons who hold positions of authority within the company, then don't expect to last too long.
