John Frum Religion

Has anyone got any thoughts on the John Frum religion.

An interesting story of how an isolated 'non-civilised' tribe came to worship this 'John Frum' character - the origins of John frum are thought to be one of the first soldiers they spoke to was John 'from' america hence 'John Frum'

Like Jesus he will return ..... on february 15th apparantly (not sure which year)

It's definitely as plausible as the others. In fact this John from America at least can be said to have existed. The more recent the myth the more observable evidence to back it up.

Christianity (and any other religion) prays heavily on the poor and uneducated.

The more we see education and living standards rise across the world, the less we will see religion dominate...

Are you serious? How come everything is going down the drain or do you not see this happening.

Are you referring to the current economic problems? I am discussing nothing so transitory, rather long term trends.

THe GDP/head of developing nations across the planet are growing year on year. India, china etc. Educational standards are improving everywhere, notably Africa and other 3rd world nations.

As a people, our living standards and education levels are constantly increasing (or do you think these were better 100 years ago, 200 years ago).

Of course things are improving. Nothing is going "down the drain". We are experiencing a small recessionary period. It does happen you know. Doesn't mean revaltions is about to come to pass...

What, you think this is the end of everything? A credit crunch, some house price falls and thats it? Total global ecomomic meltdown followed by chaos and blood in the rivers? falloff

From any holistic perspective, an event is exactly what this is. 36 months and this is over. Economic growth has been tremendous the the last 10 years, and this encouraged some to undertake risks that were not warranted. This poor fiscal prudence means the economy is now suffering and will have to undertake a period of adjustment before growth can begin again. It's called an economic cycle.

For your own sake, I'm glad you wern't around in 1929. Would have been an even bigger end of the world for you then...

Sorry I jacked your thread, I guess some might mark the calendar. I'm into the bible, and it says the meek will inherit the earth, so it's not going to go down the drain. But it does say times will get really bad before that happens, and that's why I keep referring to, "the times are getting worse".

The times are getting better and better. We are living longer, have more
comforts, travelling more, sharing cultures, fighting less than ever (really!).

Our main challenge now is to ensure we can continue to improve life standards in a way that is enviornmentally sustainable. And we will acheive it. Unlike, relgion, I have faith in human beings and see the best in people..

No worries ! I reckon the world is more it risk from environmental problems than any prophecy or scripture.

There is and has always been alot to be scared of in the world, I try to remain positive and live my life to the full.

I recently got some 'after the rapture' mints from another atheist friend, I'm saving them for feb 16th !!

You seem to slightly enjoy "things getting worse" in a macabre way as it means your book's story is coming true and all will be made "better", is that correct?

A very dangerous way of thinking shared by right wing christianity in America where they believe if the jews have Israel and the earth gets destroyed then jesus will return and make it all better.

Doesn't really supply a resolve to aid the earth's survival. Even worse when the presdient no less shares the above bias.
