Oldest New Testament Bible Heads Into Cyberspace

http://news.yahoo.com/s/n...aKLjys0NUE

BERLIN (Reuters) - More than 1,600 years after it was written in Greek, one of the oldest copies of the Bible will become globally accessible online for the first time this week.

From Thursday, sections of the Codex Sinaiticus, which contains the oldest complete New Testament, will be available on the Internet, said the University of Leipzig, one of the four curators of the ancient text worldwide.

High resolution images of the Gospel of Mark, several Old Testament books, and notes on the work made over centuries will appear on www.codex-sinaiticus.net as a first step towards publishing the entire manuscript online by next July.

The website is supposed to be up and running on July 24th! Sounds pretty cool!

The cynical and indifferent know not what they miss. For their mistake is an impediment not only to our progress as a civilization but to their happiness as individuals.

What's ironic is that the Codex Sinaiticus was written when McCain was just a kid, and yet he still doesn't have the computer skill necessary to access it on the internet!

Ironic!

and you can bet your boots that some wing nuts will be waiting to jump on this and talk about how it's proof that the Bible is this or that...

Protestants have no room to talk about what belongs in the bible. they removed books that were common to the hellenistic jews of the era and referenced in the gospels, acts and epistles because they aren't included with the Jewish Bible today.

so much of the matter of Christianity seems to have come to pass out of a necessary means for the majority of its followers...for the time period in which it was written, that is. Yet so many still insist on following the words of the Bible to the letter. In the Watchtower link that someone had posted in their signature line (from the book of Genesis):

"Let luminaries come to be in the expanse of the heavens to make a division between the day and the night; and they must serve as signs and for seasons and for days and years."

Why is there such an emphasis on light and darkness (and night and day)? Why is it propagated that all the good things that happen, happen in light only? Maybe in primitive man's eyes, this was the case, but are we primitive anymore?

I read many years ago, in a book called "The Lost Books Of the Bible/The Forgotten Books Of Eden (©1926/1927, Alpha House Inc.)", in a book about Adam and Eve, and it makes mention multiple times of them "falling to the ground as dead" whenever something bad happens. This strikes me as how people behave when they faint, and after a while, you wonder if they are really fainting, or if this is for dramatic effect (think of Under the Cherry Moon, where the mother faints exaggeratedly when Mary Sharon comes out and shows her nude body to everyone at her birthday party.)

My point is that I wonder how much of the Bible was written from the viewpoint of people who behaved more like the townsfolk in the movie The Crucible, than in reality? How much of the Bible is really meant to be metaphor or figurative? And how much of the Bible is written from a place of childish hope - in the Psalms, so much of what has been written ends up sounding more like "you won't desert me, God, I know that (right?)", or in the case of the minor prophets of the Old Testament, "God came down and kickedeth holy arse..." Fine for the day it was written, again, but to be considered as one of many holy books, not at the top of the list.
