not to get all PC on your parade here (i don't mean any negativity, just trying to figure sommin out)

wiki says:

A mulatto is a person with one white parent and one black parent, or, more generally, a person of mixed black and white ancestry.[1] It derives from Spanish (and likely from Portuguese, also) mulato (small mule, person of mixed race, mulatto; from mulo, mule; from Old Spanish; from Latin mūlus), by analogy with the mule, which is the hybrid offspring of a horse and a donkey.

Being that my family is from the Dominican Republic, it's kinda hard to figure out exactly what our background is. I do know that my great, great, great grandparents from my father's side were originally from the Canary Islands, so there is most likely some Spanish and African ancestry from that. And then there could also be some French and Amerindian in there too. This is actually something that I've always wanted to do some research on. lol

My mother is white, my father is black.

I don't find the term "mulatto" offensive, though I know many do. I believe the definition (one black parent/one white parent) is accurate.

I define myself as "mixed" or biracial -- never one or the other.

Damn! Zoe's is beautiful. But I guess that's not such a surprise seeing as though two gorgeous people conceived her. She's one hell of a heavenly spawn.

During colonialization, Europeans called African people "mules" or they were likened to mules. When a European and African mated and had a child, the term came to be mulatto, or mule and a "person". European and Indian, or NAtive Aztec, Mayan, or Incan was Mestizo.

I say European, but for further definition it was the Spaniards that colonialzed and came up with the terms.
