Spike Lee Accused of Having Anti-Italian Tendencies

June 12
Link

While Spike Lee and Clint Eastwood trade barbs over Eastwood's portrayal of black characters, a leading Italian-American group has added its voice to the fray, arguing that Lee is guilty of the same prejudices he attributes to Eastwood.

Lee first criticized Eastwood last month during the Festival de Cannes, saying that black actors were conspicuous by their absence in Eastwood's Iwo Jima films "Flags of Our Fathers" and "Letters From Iwo Jima."

Eastwood replied that the films were historically accurate and that Lee should "shut his face," to which Lee quipped that Eastwood "is not my father, and we're not on a plantation."

According to Bill Dal Cerro, president of the Italic Institute of America, Lee may have his own anti-Italian racist tendencies to worry about.

"Spike Lee is very talented, but I sometimes wish he'd practice what he preaches," Dal Cerro said. "His points about African-Americans are well taken, but, ironically, he does the same thing to Italians in his films."

The Italic Institute of America has criticized Lee in the past for his portrayal of Italian-Americans in "Do the Right Thing" and "Jungle Fever" and has expressed worry about "Miracle at St. Anna," Lee's upcoming World War II drama set in Italy.

There were no Italians in his film? Wow. Would seem kind of bizarre.

I see their point too. I thought the same thing the first time I saw "Do the Right Thing"

Why would an Italian-American group be attempting backlash for comments about Clint Eastwood? lol (just asking biggrin )

It's not about who he puts in his movies, it's about how they're portrayed - and what I've personally noticed is that Italian Americans are often portrayed in his movies as being unintelligent, racist thugs.

It could be - or maybe they're trying to adopt Clint as an honorary Italian to kick off the reincarnation of the Spaghetti Western.

Spike has portrayed every race group in his movies making prejudiced remarks. It's not like he's lying that they do it. I'd like someone to show me one ethnic group that does not make prejudiced remarks. Let's take the series the Sopranos. When I watched the Sopranos, I noticed they were portrayed as racist thugs and gangstas. Very stereotypical.

Interesting that you both made that point. This is why Spike has a right to complain to Clint about not showing the role of African-American soldiers, no matter how small the numbers were, in the involvement of raising the flag at Iwo Jima in his movie, just as you and others feel you have a right to complain about Spike portraying Italians as racist thugs. I guess you can say it works both ways.

Oh, sure he does. And, you're right, it does go both ways. I think that was the point of the article in the first place.
So, do you think that just because everyone makes prejudiced remarks that it's ok for Spike Lee to do it too? I would think that if it's wrong for one it's wrong for everyone. And, yes, the Sopranos is very stereotypical too and I also have a problem with it because of that.

I'm going to have to agree with The Italic Institute of America on this.

I actually don't like Spike Lee anymore (despite my beloved School Daze, Jungle Fever, Mo' Better Blues and Malcolm X) for the very reason that he has such a narrow view of everyone who's not a black male.

The black men in his movies get to be varied. He's portrayed a wide spectrum.

However, Italians and women are always portrayed as limited, two-dimensional fashion. Not complex AT ALL.

I've said this for years concerning women in Spike's movies (and She Hate Me was the height of Spike's disservice to women), but it's also true with Italians.

Pathetic really.

Exactly. Spike is great at showing the true sides of people, the ugliness that comes out in certain situations. Living in NYC, I saw that ugliness when Yusef Hawkins was killed in Bensonhurst and Michael Griffith in Howard Beach.

Like every director, Spike's giving you HIS point of view. You don't like it, don't patronize his films. Simple.

I'd like to know if this group complained over how Scorsese & Coppola portrayed Italians in their films.
